History
Established in 1988.
Beginning as an off-shoot of the established Frame-O-Rama store in San Francisco’s Russina Hill district, Cheap Pete’s Frame Factory Outlet was created to cater to a wider spectrum of customers that were searching for wider selections in readymade frames at factory outlet pricing.
As the years went on, Cheap Pete’s expanded its selections to include framing components (glass, matting, backing, and hanging hardware), and eventually integrated basic custom framing elements (mounting, assembling, custom mat cutting, etc.) into its list of services. These changes established Cheap Pete’s as a convenient one-stop-shop for our clients’ framing and displaying needs.
The dramatic success of the San Francisco Cheap Pete’s led to the opening of other locations in Walnut Creek (1991), San Rafael (1993), and San Mateo (1995).
Meet the Business Owner
Peter G.
Business Owner
In 1974, San Francisco businessman Peter Gumina, as a result of his personal experience looking for accessible and affordable picture framing, opened his own SF frame shop. He called this store «Frame-O-Rama» and its do-it-yourself format was just what the customers were looking for. Within a few years, other store locations were opened in Burlingame, Mill Valley, and Berkeley, and their services evolved from do-it-yourself to full-service custom framing.
In 1988, rather than change the successful format of the Frame-O-Rama stores, Peter opened the first of a new type of store and called it «Cheap Pete’s Frame Factory Outlet». He understood the demand for the readymade elements of picture framing and struck up deals with various manufacturers to offer frames and supplies at discounted «outlet» prices.
After 39 years of experience, the family-owned and operated, San Francisco based company remains under Peter’s guidance and is considered the Bay Area’s premier custom picture framer.
