Air Performance Heating and Cooling

Just had my complete AC/​Heating system replaced by these guys and I couldn’t be more pleased. It’s a major decision & cost for any homeowner but I’d certainly recommend John and his team all day long. They are professional, friendly, reasonably priced and completed the job a day earlier than anticipated. Can’t ask for more than that!

Since I’m getting solar installed in the near future and my furnace and AC were getting pretty old (18 years), I decided to look into getting my HVAC system replaced with a dual-​fuel system. I also needed zoning installed in my house as it’s always too warm upstairs and too cold downstairs.
I started my installer search by contacting well-​rated companies near me (San Ramon). The first company I called took my number and told me someone would call me back within 2 hours to talk to me about my project. They never called back. The second company I called just scheduled a consultation with me without taking any info. They gave me a 2-​hour window.
Then I called Air Performance. John (the owner) answered the phone himself. He actually asked me about my project and then scheduled a consultation — at a specific time. When he arrived, he had materials with him based on our phone conversation. We did a walk-​through of the house so I could show him what he had to deal with, and he explained the process to me. He answered my questions thoroughly and honestly.
A few days later, John provided me with four detailed quotes, with options based on our discussions. One was a baseline quote — a like-​for-​like replacement of my current system — not what I wanted/​would pick, but just so I had a basis for comparison from something familiar (i.e., he didn’t have to do this quote — he was being thorough). The other three options were variants of what I wanted. John spent a lot of time answering my technical questions and helping me do a very comprehensive compare and contrast of the choices. This included going back to TRANE tech support a couple of times to get answers to my questions. He was a lot more detailed and helpful than the other company I was considering. Turns out he was also a little cheaper, so going with him was a no-​brainer. NOTE: Air Performance offers TRANE systems. It seems that many of the HVAC companies these days specialize in a single vendor. The other company I considered offered Bryant systems. I did the research on the two product vendors as well, and found them to be very closely tied in terms of performance and quality. Turns out that Bryant is a bit more efficient, but TRANE had better warranties/​longevity.
We scheduled the work a couple of weeks out so I had time to prepare (john was ready sooner than I was). The work took a total of 6 business days. We were without a furnace for 2 days. John provided space heaters for us to use to keep the house warm during that time. There were as many as 4 guys at the house a few times, but mostly it was two: the lead guy was Ronnie, and his assistant was Jaime. Both of them were great. They were very respectful of me, my dogs, and the house. I asked Ronnie to text me each morning before arriving so I could get my dogs ready. I also asked them to let me know if they’d be going through the side gate so I could keep the dogs from getting out. They honored my every request and were very careful to keep my dogs safe. Each evening they cleaned up to the point that you wouldn’t’ve known they’d been there, even though they were coming back the next day to do more work.
They focused first on getting the gas furnace up and running so we’d have heat again. Then they got the zoning and electric components up and running. The work they did was precise and clean. I had painted the walls around my old furnace but couldn’t reach behind it. After removing the old furnace, they offered to paint the remaining area for me. At the end, Ronnie gave us a thorough walkthrough of how to care for our new system, and then John came out to inspect the work and review the up-​coming inspections that needed to happen.
I had noticed some weird things with the thermostat that I discussed with John during his visit. The thermostat he installed was the very newest model so he didn’t know the answers. He contacted TRANE tech support to find out, and is coming back out to do an update for me and make some adjustments.
I had an overall extremely positive experience with John and his crew, and we’re very happy with the new system. The house is much more comfortable as a result of the zoning, and the new dual-​fuel system is amazing — it’s super quiet and amazingly energy-​efficient. I anticipate having a long-​term relationship with John and Air Performance, as they’ll be the ones I call when I need standard maintenance services on my new system. I called Air Performance H&C to repair some ducting that was smashed. If $ was no object I should have replaced all the ducting but just wanted to do the
repair for now. These guys fit me into their busy schedule as if I was spending the big bucks, were very professional and did a FABULOUS job! A # 1 Service!!!

A long overdue review …
We had an entire heating and cooling system installed in January 2015. They were very competitive in pricing and I really liked the salesman. He not only familiarized me with heating and cooling systems and brands but happily answered any questions. Once we booked the installation we were informed as to how long the job would take etc. Everything was great. The job even took a bit longer than originally expected because they went above and beyond to make the proper adjustments. In our garage there is a pole that would hinder the easy removal of the filter. So they decided to raise the height of the unit as to avoid this pole. In doing that they had to make some adjustments to the gas line which extended the job time. I was SO happy they did this. I can’t imagine having to yank the filer out sideways and possibly damage it each time. Thank you!!! Our system was also installed on the coldest day of the year which left us without heat for one night. They even offered to buy us heating fans for the house till the job was done. Thankfully we already had one and did not need to use their generosity but it was so nice to know they were concerned about our comfort.
So now we are almost a year into using this new system and we have no complaints at all. They even came back out when the weather heated up to do a diagnostic on the A/​C unit. Since it was installed in the winter it was hard to properly test the A/​C.
We look forward to using them again for any heating or cooling needs.

The weatherman predicted temps in the hundreds a few weeks ago so I needed to get our AC unit back in working order. As far as we could tell, the fan was working but there was no cool air coming out. I tried another company and they were 5 days out from being able to send someone over to diagnose the problem. I asked a friend who works in the local building industry for a recommendation and he told me to call John. I called at 3:30 and John picked up the phone on the second ring and said he’d call back in a few minutes to see when a technician could get there. 15 minutes later, he tells me Ryan is on his way. 15 minutes after that, Ryan is on my doorstep with his shoe booties on to diagnose the problem. He walked me through what parts were broken, which needed replacement and what could be repaired without additional parts. I’m one of the people that want all the details and Ryan understood that and was more than willing to explain everything. It was already past 4 PM and he didn’t have the replacement part in his truck, but Ryan insisted he’d get me back up and running today so left to go grab the part back at his office, came back, instead it and had the very reasonable invoice for me to sign and pay by 5:15. Their amazing customer service and willingness to go the extra mile has made me a customer for life. And the bonus is they are a small local business based in San Ramon.

I called them and they never called back.

When does the AC always break? When its 100+ degrees outside and then its always a mad scramble to try and get a company to come over to your house to fix it. Ours went down during a heat wave and with pets and a baby there was no way we could wait 1 – 2 weeks for service. I called Air Performance and spoke with John (owner) and he was able to get a service person out within a few hours. Our service person (Ryan) was friendly and fixed multiple issues getting us up and running again with cool air. Not only that, but he took the time to explain the parts needed and the work that he was going to do with pricing before hand.
I worked my way down the Unilocal list to start and needed to call 8 different companies, 7 of them wouldn’t come out in less than a week even after I told them we had a baby in the house. Great service all around from Air Performance and I would highly recommend them. Next time I’ll only need to make 1 call.

Steve is a nice guy and got the job done. BUT, he didn’t tell me how much it was going to cost. When the job was done the charge was a surprising $ 496.00 I was shocked. I asked if he would give me a breakdown of the parts and labor. He said no, they use a book that says how much to charge for a job and he gave me the lowest price. I looked up the price of the part and it was about $ 86.00. I called and said it looked like he charged me about $ 100.00 and hour labor. He again told me about the book everyone uses now to price a job. He finally offered me a $ 50.00 refund, I asked for more but accepted it as that was all he was willing to give me.
I really think I could have got the work done for less so I think Steve is expensive.

Our air conditioning stopped working yesterday so I made two calls today. The first one I called said they would call me back. So I called air performance heating and cooling. John answered the phone and I told him what was going on and he said he would be here in an hour. He showed up exactly an hour later. He fixed the problem and now we have our air back in this 93 degree weather. He was very nice and his prices were very fair. I highly recommend this place! Thanks for the fast and friendly service!

We have been using Air Performance for many years. They are great at repairs and installation of whole new systems. We manage many properties in the area and Air Performance services them all. They have always been fair and honest. I have tried other services in the past and will stick with Air Performance. They are the best.

Our AC stopped working 4^th ofJuly weekend! This company had nice reviews so we called and John picked up on a Sunday morning. He said he’d try to come fix it later that day. I was really hoping he would because every other company I called did not work Sundays. He followed through and came to fix the problem. He was really quick and fairly priced. I appreciate that he went the extra mile on a holiday weekend!

John freij and his workers were competent, knowledgeable, and honest. They did great a great job in assisting me in selecting the right heating and air conditioning system. The system works fine and I would recommend them to anyone.

Hands down 5 Stars! I live by Unilocal and read the reviews –not sure where the 1 star came from but based on my experience it’s unfounded. My AC broke this morning and John was here in three hours and finished in 30mins. John and his colleague Nick were absolutely professional in every way. They assessed the situation very quickly, presented two options and were under budget. They also wore shoe covers and kept everything clean. Further, they took time to answer questions and carefully walked us through the the new digital thermostat which was a major improvement.
Look no further than Air Performance.

First off, I don’t understand how this company got 5 stars.
John — the president is not professional nor reliable.
MY WORK ORDER WAS DELAYED FOR A WEEK!
The excuse? He never returned my calls or voicemails. I had to call him and then he didn’t have his «schedule» with him so I had to call the next day for an appt. What kind of business is this?! Then when I got an appt, he never made it on time, I had to call him to find out where he was. Then he didn’t know he had to get on the roof to check my A/​C, then the list goes on & then he told my property manager he had strep throat. I don’t understand why he took the job, if he couldn’t do it??? What the heck, I’m seriously not making this up. I guess he does not have experience of sympathy for people suffering in their home with the heat blasting at 82 degrees. All I got was a sorry tomorrow, tomorrow, and I was stupid enough for believing him because of a stupid recommendation.
If you want to wait over the weekend to have something fixed, then wait the week for him to get his calendar/​schedule/​illness/​whatever together, go here!
Anyway, my property manager finally called Moore AC where they came in quickly & fixed the issue promptly.

First called John when my furnace went on the blink this past winter. He quickly came out, did an inspection and even checked/​cleaned a few suspect parts. Turned out that was all that was needed. Better yet, no charge! Based on that single, simple service call, I had him bid a small job for a new addition that is currently in progress. He prepared a straight-​forward, very fairly priced quote. Even then, John was flexible and helped to work just a little more of the budget with me to help control my project costs w/​o sacrificing HVAC performance. In the end, I added a few new items at moderate cost. The Air Performance crew not only completed the work on the addition, but also did a furnace tune-​up, installed a new state of the art thermostat and even sealed all the register vents in the house!
Really appreciate the «no sales pitch» approach! Low key, professional and, most importantly, the entire crew knows their stuff! They won’t just recommend the easy or most expensive option. Instead, working through any pro’s, con’s and cost issues so that you are 100% satisfied.
I definitely consider Air Performance my new go-​to HVAC contractor.

I would like to thank Don for his honesty. I had been told I needed a few furnance by another company that has serviced my equipment for the last 10 years. Don came out as a second quote and suggested it might be something other than having to replace the furnance. I acted on his recomendation and it worked. For the time being his honesty saved me a considerable amount of money. When the time comes to need to replace it they will be top on my list. John P

Air Performance Heating and Cooling installed a new furnace for us and did a great job. I can’t say enough good things about this business.
Don gave us the quote and spent a lot of time answering our questions and recommended an excellent approach for us to take. Then Ronnie and John did a great job installing the unit. My husband was amazed at how well they sealed all the duct work and their attention to detail. I was amazed at how clean everything was when they left.
John, the owner, came by to inspect the job once is was complete and he was very nice, supportive and helpful.
We will definitely use them again! They are great!

Excellent knowledge, reliable, and honest are the best ways to describe my experience with John. My heater was turning on, but wasn’t firing (producing the heat).
After being given the run around first, with my home warranty company and 2^nd, with the company that originally installed our forced air heating system, it was a pleasant surprise finding this company on Unilocal.No up selling, just great service and advice on our system.
John was able to work his $ 80 visit fee into the service amount, unlike any of the other companies I spoke to. He mis-​quoted me a lower rate for labor over the phone, but still honored that price. He made sure I understood what was going on and that he was doing quality work.
He’s now my «go to» heater/​ac guy as long as I live here in San Ramon. I trust him.

John has come to my house for two separate repairs. First time was for our AC unit, and second time was due to our heater turning on and off intermittently. John is a very approachable and honest person. He patiently answered all of our questions and gave us an explanation for what was causing issues with our AC and furnace. We are very happy with his work and he seems to be reasonably priced.
One negative thing is that he seems to consistently run late. I’m sure this is due to the nature of his business and heavy work load, but I would have appreciated a phone call instead of sitting around waiting.
