History

Established in 2012.

Over lunch, Brian and his co-​founder Jennifer were talking about their experiences in the sciences as children. They had both enjoyed wonderful programs that influenced their thinking and development throughout the rest of their learning career.

Brian shared with Jennifer that he wanted to open a science camp to stimulate a passion for science in the next generation. After toying with the idea together, Brian actually decided to go for it! With Jennifer’s help, science camp grew from just an idea, to a yearly celebration of science for kids.

Brian has been fascinated with science his entire life. In elementary school he was a part of NASA club, FSEA (Future Scientists and Engineers of America), and GATE. He also read every book his school library had available on space, dinosaurs, and geology… and also explored Sunnyvale Public Library. Brian’s enthusiasm for science continues to this day.

During high school, at age 16, he found a new passion; working with children. He worked at Pump It Up, Silva Martial Arts, and The Tech Museum among others. He has also been part of the ownership in several other small bay area businesses.

With his science, child care, and business backgrounds, Brian realized he had an opportunity to create something great! With his co-​founder Jennifer’s help, he began a new kid’s science camp which became The Science Factory in 2014.

Brian likes to say, «Our goal each year is to make camp so exciting for the kids, that we are envious of the program ourselves!»

My 6 year old daughter attended this camp and had a great time. She enjoyed it so much that we tacked on a 4th week later. The counselors are great with kids of all ages. Many days she was full of wonderful stories that she couldn’t wait to share. Some of her favorite experiences from this summer were the rainforest and earthquake exhibits at academy of science, NASA talk, making goo, and standing on egg cartons.

Brian Hurst is awesome with kids! You can tell he really enjoys hanging around them. My 9 year old sons LOVED Science Factory! This is one of the best summer programs around and the cost is very reasonable

My daughter (6) had the pleasure of attending all 4 weeks and LOVED it! The camp involves daily hands-​on experiments, frequent field trips and perfectly marries learning with fun! The counselors are great with the kids and create an environment that encourages growth. Additionally, the camp was manageable (+/​-​30 kids), reasonably priced and had a balance of learning/​physical activity. We recommend this camp and look forward to attending again next year.

Best science camp!!! The name of this camp, «The Science Factory,» says it all… Well organized, themed camps FULL of hands on experiments and exciting field trips! I chaperoned field trips to NASA and Aviation Museum. The instructors are fun, caring, respectful, and responsible. The kids were equally as fun, attentive, well behaved, and full of questions. A wonderful science experience! I would highly recommend signing up for more than one of these well thought out themed camps at The Science Factory!!!

Our son attends Silva for Tae Kwan Do, so he was excited to attend Science Camp there. He had such a wonderful time he came back for a second week. The counselors were knowledgeable and caring, and he loved the various building projects as well as the field trips. A great value and a great experience.
