History

Established in 1963.

In 1937, William and Mary Bonelli purchased a ranch, which through the years hosted rodeos and car races. The property, now known as the Saugus Speedway, is owned by the Bonelli grandchildren. Three times each week, they host a thriving Swap Meet that started 50 years ago. They are proud to note that some of their current Vendors have been with them throughout the decades that the market has been open. Many loyal shoppers show up each week to find a treasure that is old or discover what is new.

William B.

Business Owner

William Bonelli was born in Kingman, Arizona in 1895, and moved to Los Angeles in 1912. He entered the University of Southern California and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1916, served in the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army in 1918 – 19, and remained in the Reserve as a pilot until 1934.

He obtained his master of arts degree from Occidental College in 1923 and his law degree from Southwestern Law School in 1924; he was admitted to the California Bar in 1925.

He was a large promoter of the Southern California aircraft industry and the Santa Clarita Valley. He purchased Hoot Gibson’s rodeo venue in 1937 in Saugus, California and ran rodeos until in 1939. Bonelli Ranch Stadium hosted a myriad of events, showcasing midget cars and hot rods. In 1954, the surface was paved and the name changed to Saugus Speedway.

In 1963, the first swap meet was held and continues today with markets every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
