Cliff Crest Bed & Breakfast Inn

This B&B is perfect for you if you want to stay someplace that feels like home or the home of a relative. However they should not advertise on the major websites because it does not meet basic hospitality industry standards. There was no soap, hand towels or wash cloths in our bathroom. The bed was very uncomfortable. We tossed and turned all night. Overall the property is cluttered and a bit too dirty with old tattered blankets, linens, dust, etc. This place is put together with scotch tape and thumb tacks. It’s falling apart. The people were very nice, but slow. They made breakfast which consisted of fruit, toast and some of the worst scrambled eggs I’ve had in a long time. I feel bad for being so blunt because the innkeepers were so sweet. But they need to sell this place and retire.

This is an amazing place, lots of character and feel so comfortable. Me And my mom wanted to find a place that we can enjoy Santa Cruz and not stay in one of the many conventional motels here. the inn was the perfect place to come after a drive from big sur, the owners are the most kind and pleasant.

This bed and breakfast was affordable and lovely. They were able to accommodate at the last minute. The place was clean and very homey like. The staff made us feel very comfortable and welcomed. I would recommend this B&B to anyone.

This review is strictly regarding the customer service I received. I was not able to stay at the inn because of the crappy service I received even BEFORE I got there.
I reserved a room for late July for one night back in April. When I called she said I could reserve the room for one night. I received a call yesterday telling me that because I reserved for one night I will not be able to stay in the reserved room. In fact, I would have to wait to see what and if any rooms were available when I got in. WHAAAT?
It must have been Adriana who took my reservation, regardless I was talking to the same person who took my reservations. She then said she told me she thought it was for June. I told her that this is a very bad business practice. Because of her slip up, I am now practically kicked to the curb because she was not looking at the right calendar when I made the reservation?
HMMM…how did she even know I wanted it in July if she had it down for June? She then tried to put the blame on me by telling me that there was a two night minimum and it states it on the website. But when I called SHE said it was okay.
Personally, I think it was an underhanded, disgraceful and tacky way to handle the situation. NOT GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE!
I cancelled my reservation. I would much rather stay at more expensive places then some place that shovels a pile of cow pies even before you get there!

Very special magical place and owners greet you like old friends! A wonderful pleasant experience! We had a lovely time at this historical Victorian home and inn. Breakfast was comfort food, eggs, fruit, juices, and a variety of bread and jam, and tea and flowers waiting at the table. We are definitely coming back ! View of roller-​coaster from Victorian breakfast room. Owner is a very talented painter and sculptor. Love abounds! The room was immaculate and full of character. I wish I had taken pictures! Our shower was Spanish tiles and as my daughter said «wow ! Pretty shower!» Canopy bed was fun to sleep in, clean, and comfy linens ! We didn’t want to leave.

We took a chance staying here after reading the reviews. The owners are so very nice. They show you around, offer information and are extremely helpful. The place is cluttered, it needs to have the clutter cleaned out, the flower beds spruced up and some of the art work reworked in the rooms. Where you go in and out there was ladders, etc. Empty flower pots and dead ones that needed to be taken care of. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean but cluttered with items that were not needed. The food was ok but it was served with a smile and caring attitude. I feel they just need to take some time and do a good spring cleaning and it would be fine. Again the owners were wonderful people, full of stories of the area.

The bed n breakfast is simply awesome. Adriana was very pleasant and served awesome breakfast. I must recommend here to stay if u r in Santa Cruz.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a weekend in Santa Cruz and tried out the Cliff Crest Inn. We stayed one night in the Rose Room. We got the room last minute (as we tend to do) and Adriana was so sweet and showed us around. She gave us a good deal for a Saturday night. The room was comfortable upstairs at the end of the hall and had a lovely fireplace which Adriana prepared for us before we went out for dinner. The bathroom was across the hall and had a claw bathtub/​shower. Lighting the fire was really nice after an evening walking around. The best part about this bed and breakfast is definitely the location. We were able to leave the car at the inn and walked everywhere.
Sunday morning we slept in a bit and went down for breakfast. The dining area is beautiful with stained glass and a great view. The food was ok. There was fresh fruit and French toast and scrambled eggs. We were not very impressed but had a nice time chatting. Considering the normal pricing and quality of the inn we felt that most people would find the food not up to their standards; probably about what you would get at a continental breakfast at a cheap motel.
Adriana let us keep the car parked in the inn for the day and recommended the natural bridges walk. We absolutely loved the walk along the beach, going to the butterfly boardwalk and really appreciated not having to find parking.
All in all we enjoyed staying at the cliff crest inn. Adriana and her husband are lovely people and the rooms are old fashioned and nice. Just maybe make different breakfast plans :)

Stayed in the Pineapple room which is «right» next to the front door so you will hear everyone come & go. Its also by the breakfast room so in the morning you will hear dishes & people talking if you are not an early riser. The room is small with an old small tv set. The room is supposed to have wireless internet but the code does not work & there is a musty smell from the bathroom so I kept the door closed at all times & I did find a few hairs that were not mine in the bathroom upon arrival. Yes its true they have Irish Spring soap. I was surprised that the hosts come into your room while you are gone but its to turn down the bed. The hosts are very nice people. The breakfast is not a full breakfast but its toast, eggs, apple tart, grapes & some oj that taste like water. The coffee is Cosco but it was decent. The breakfast room is interesting, it’s like a ladies tea room. The location of the b & b is excellent as Its just 2 min. walk to the boardwalk & to downtown Santa Cruz is about a 10 min walk to the heart of town. Note: they do let people from the beach park in their lot for a fee so dont think its just the people staying there who will be around your car.

We were very disappointed on our stay. The place was filthy, dusty and cluttered. The breakfast was the worst I’ve ever had in a B&B. Some slices of bread on a plate, she first brings over, then she brings a WHOLE cantalope in a bowl not cut up or anything. The orange juice was served in Trader Joe’s cartons, no gourmet coffee here, costco brand. My husbands napkin was soiled and had hair on it. No wine in the evening or home made snacks, just some of their plums in a bowl from their garden. We paid $ 300.00 for 1 night, when I made the reservation I told her I was bringing my daughter and she never said there was a extra charge, but when i got there she charged me for her, when I questioned her on this she said she forgot to tell me about the extra charge. And would not honor the price I was told on the phone when making the reservation. This place is a rip off big thime

Filthy and horrible! My husband and I stayed here for 1 night out of the planned 3 for a weekend getaway. The hosts are very nice but we for some reason ended up staying in a whole other property across the street because of our dog Lucy (apparently because we have a dog we have to sleep in hell). Just say you’re not pet friendly!!!
Stained sheets, rats (our dog was up pacing all night because she could hear them scurrying, so were up all night too) filthy bathroom, sheets over random furniture, dark, cold. Shared bathroom! Just an absolute nightmare!!!
We’re so easy to please and this «additional property» of theirs is not suitable to charge people to stay there, it’s also not advertised anywhere. My neck still hurts from the horrible bed and pillows.
i can’t comment on the breakfast because I left with squealing tires at 7am.
If you are interested in this place make sure to confirm you’re not staying in «the pink house of death.»

We stayed in Cliff house for one night last weekend. It was my first experience staying in B&B, we got a small room next to the kitchen, with small bathroom, there was no shampoo, the rest is OK. Close to boardwalk, good breakfast, the host Adriana is very nice. I would recommend this place.

I would highly recommend against staying here unless the surrounding hotels/​motels are sold out and you need the location. I was utterly disappointed, and here’s why:
Interior/​Ambiance: Lovely charming old house thats been stuffed wall to wall with tacky floral paintings, creepy family portraits, weird little sculptures and other odds and ends. Shower was a neat tiled floor to ceiling deal with stained glass window. Bed was huge. Soap was IRISH SPRING (lol). No shampoo/​conditioner. No wine in room, no cookie, nothing special. Linens old and overused. Some old early 90’s TV set blemishes each room (seriously, remove it or put in a proper set). Granted the antique dishes are quite nice, which bring me to my next point.
Food: Simply, the worst bed & breakfast food I have ever had. Costco muffins. Kirkland Signature Coffee. Cheap scrambled eggs. Baked potato .? Out of season low grade fruit thats been sitting out for a while, possibly pulled out of fridge in saran wrap. I was waiting and wishing the breakfast would make up for my feeling of being ripped off but it accentuated it.
Location: very, very good. Walk to downtown, walk to the boardwalk.
Booking: You will need to call in and give them all your details over the phone, and likely need to repeat and spell out everything.
I give it one star for location, one for the house itself. Minus 3 stars for the value/​décor/​food/​service. Heard the owner complain about being so busy, and having to serve so many people multiple times: we gave you tons of cash, hire staff! I paid $ 270 for the Jenny Room. Big ripoff. Amateurs.

My boyfriend and I just stayed here for our 4 year anniversary! It was super pretty! I LOVE the location!
We stayed in, «Jenny’s Room,» and it was gorgeous! The bed was huge and the shower was awesome! I swear it might be haunted, though, because I turned the shower on all the way and then I turned to talk to my boyfriend and it turned itself off. .. . =D
The breakfast was the only down fall. I was debating between this place and another in Berkeley and I chose this place because it was in Santa Cruz. The other place offered waffles, pancakes, etc. and all we got at this place rasin toast (which was good) and a small thing of scrambled eggs with no seasoning.
If you are in party mode, I would not reccommend staying here unless you rent the whole place to yourself.
If you are into a quite weekend and you don’t make too much noise, than this is the place for you!

I was planning a mini-​vacation to Santa Cruz. Being that I was on a budget, I was getting discouraged by the high prices of most accommodations in the area. To my relief I found the Cliff Crest Bed & Breakfast Inn. They offer incredible discounts when you ask for the MID-​WEEK SPECIAL! When I called to make a reservation for my husband and I for Tuesday & Wednesday nights, the owner Constantin was personable, genuine and flexible with the pricing.
I admit that my first impression upon arriving to this place was that it seemed a tad bit disorganized. The owners are old fashion — they keep hand written records and they do charge a fee for credit card use. But these details go right in line with the overall rustic feel of the place. A few articles on the walls give a historic context to the house — it was once owned by California Lieutenant Governor William T. Jeter, it was the set in the 1980’s Clint Eastwood film Southern Impact, and the lush garden was designed by the famous San Francisco architect John McLaren.
The house and garden are also adorned with original art works including sculptures and water color paintings all done by owner and host Adriana. She and her husband Constantin are very approachable, accommodating, down to earth, good natured, and worldly people. Between the two of them they speak 5 languages! They were not at all rigid about parking, timeliness for breakfast or timeliness for check-​in and check-​out.
In particular, Adriana has a heart of gold. She made us tea and a snack each night and breakfast each morning. She spoke with us on a variety of social, political and economic issues. The last morning we were there she even took us around the house and garden snapping pictures of us as if it were our own personal photo shoot! As if we could as for anything more, she also sent us away with a bag full of fresh fruits for the road. She made my husband and I feel like we were family.
Truly home away from home. A one-​of-​a-​kind experience!

Oh, where to begin. In short, cheap service and poor attitude. For the details, read on —
We had high hopes when we pulled up the small driveway and saw the owner picking apples from their backyard tree.
The room was nice enough, which we will give the 2 stars for. But that is all you can expect from this «bed and breakfast».
The breakfast was horrible. They offered eggs, but they only scrambled them. We could choose between «runny» or more well done, but she didn’t mention «sunny-​side up», or «over easy», etc. Is it so hard to do eggs any other way besides scrambled? This came with bread that looked like it came from Costco. Jam came in those little packets. Apples from their yard were offered, but they were not good. That was about all we had for breakfast. Not what you would expect from a bed and BREAKFAST.
No other midnight snacks, milk and cookies, wine tasting, or anything that we have had at other bed and breakfasts.
The worst part was when we were checking out. We had a gift certificate from
. First of all, the owner made us pay a fee for using this gift certificate. When we questioned this fee, he started to lecture us in a patronizing tone about how hard it is to run a business and how they have to pay a commission when they accept this gift certificate. (We went to another B&B the next night and they didn’t charge any fee for using the GC.)

Maybe it’s true that it is standard procedure to charge a fee, and they are really having a hard time making ends meet. But don’t take it out on the customer. There’s no need to lecture your paying guest. He tried to con us into staying another night, and when we refused, he kept pushing us to let him put down our bill as higher than it was so that we will use up the GC, and they’ll give the change back to us in cash. They said that this way, we can avoid paying another fee at another B&B the next night (which was not true). I don”t know how this would’ve helped him, but whatever the benefit to him, it was shady. Why would we want to cash out the rest of the GC?
In any case, even if he is paying a commission for the gift certificate, it’s still business right? Their B&B is being advertised, and brought in customers like us that wouldn’t have gone there otherwise. I don’t think they were even booked full that night.
The next night we stayed at Gosby Inn in Pacific grove near Monterey. That was a night and day difference. Wonderful, courteous service, wine tasting, turn-​down service, newspaper in the morning. And a great breakfast. All this without charging a «fee» for using a gift certificate and a money-​grubbing attitude.
