You get what you pay for. I have been using this shop when I need stuff done right for over 2 decades. I went cheap on oil/​fluid changes and my vehicle ended up with poor service syndrome. Kimm got me back on track and squared away. Thorough inspection, analysis, and recommendations. Excellent service and fair pricing. Tell him how much you hate the Dodgers and your sure to get a great discount! Ignacio is the man … would have never known I had a radiator (or power steering cooler for that mater) leak if it were not for his keen eye in noticing very subtle leakage. Kimm and Ignacio are the best. They treat you like a friend. Just like finding a good doctor, finding a good mechanic can be tricky. Anyone who has experienced the great service will tell you that this is the place for auto service. They want to make sure you are happy and it shows. If you like Three Stooges memorabilia take a look in the office. You’ll know why after you meet Kimm.

Go Here. Use these guys, period. I think folks are always leery of going to a repair shop, wondering if they are going to get ripped off somehow, I can guarantee these guys will do the right thing every time.
Kimm has been servicing cars for my wife and I for years, I read the other reviews and couldn’t disagree more with the person who only gave one star stating customer satisfaction is not a primary concern.
I brought my Mazda in because an airbag light was on, Kimm diagnosed the problem and was going to charge me the standard fee, however, once he determined (short version) that I would need to take it to the dealer to get the problem fixed, he didn’t charge me the diagnosis fee because he knew I would get double billed by Mazda service because they would need to do their own analysis.
This is just one example of the great service to expect at Opal Cliffs.

Satisfied 1986 Toyota land cruiser!

Um so… Went to get my vehicle smogged. They were fast and as cheap as anywhere else you could go. Lost star? The older guy there was… I’m assuming being funny? It was a little hard to gauge if he was laughing with me or at me. A character to say the least but not what you might call the warm and fuzzy kinda guy. a little gruff and hard to gauge but I’ll assume he’s got his own sense of humor. But hey, They got me in right away, they were fast and efficient. I’d go back.

I have known Kimm and his operation for 15 years now. I send all my friends there for smogs, maintenance and serious repairs. I am a computer tech /​shade tree mechanic too… I got in a bind in the middle of a brake job once on my Mercedes 450SL Roadster…(couldn’t bleed the system properly & other issues) — — - Knew I was in over my head, so I had the car towed over to Opal Cliffs. Ziggy did a great job of doing it RIGHT… & Kimm didn’t laugh at me too much… ;-}~ Like I said, I have worked on my own cars (& GF’s etc.) for over 45 years, There are only 2 shops in town that I would trust to ever touch my Mercedes, Opal Cliffs and Water Star Motors.

I would not recommend this business. I brought my car in with the check engine light on. It cost $ 130 just to put the car up and check what was wrong, plus another $ 370 or so to fix the problem. I admit, the light went off, and the car did drive better. But less then a month later the light came on again. When I set up another appointment and he wanted to charge me ANOTHER $ 130 just to put the car up and verify what was wrong. Now, I would not expect him to fix anything for free and understand that it could be something else that was wrong with the car. But I fell like, I brought the car in a month previous because the check engine light came on and it was on again. I expect businesses to have a higher degree of concern over the satisfaction of their customers. When I brought this up we argued about the $ 130 fee, but he wouldn’t budge a dollar.
I won’t be coming back, not because I think they don’t know what they are doing with cars, but because I did not get the impression that they really cared about doing right by me, the customer.

I was freaking out. My suburu was making the most horrible noise on the highway and I had to pull over. This place was the first legit car place I could find. I told them my car was making a funny noise. They took the time out to see what was wrong. I was on the verge of tears and they worked with me. Kim even called the Suburu dealership the next day and had them assit in the labor. They made time for me and worked really hard. I owe them my life. Plus Kim kinda reminds me of my grandpa ;). I would go back again!!!

Kimm had called me about my review and offered to look at the fan belts again to show me what was wrong (he said the back of the belts). I was going to try and take it in as soon as I could but being a student and working full-​time (you busy Unilocalers understand!) I have not a chance to schedule something.
My review is not bad, I just have not had time to follow up. It’s been less than a month since I have written that review, and I had hoped that the company would understand people do have busy schedules before saying that my review is a «probable bad review». I will update my review after the fan belts get checked with honest and accurate information as I always do, which hopefully will be within the next month. :)

I love this place! Kimm has been there on the corner of 41^st and Portola seems like 30 years. He always gets my cars and trucks done when he says he will, usually within estimate. The one time there was a problem, it was over a year later and out of warranty, but he was quick to make it right totally free of charge anyway, even paid for the tow and gave me a free oil change. And the great thing was, I had no idea it was a failed part he replaced the year before! He quoted me $ 100.00 to diagnose it and could have charged me for the repair for all I knew. THAT’S good service, and that’s why I recommend Opal Cliffs to everyone I know.
Big bonus: Location. For smog checks or oil changes, I drop off, and from the shop, you can see 3 surf shops, a couple of skate shops, ten different restaurants, really cool second-​hand stores, three chic coffee shops, a liquor store, a few hair salons, a couple of gyms and an adult bookstore. What more could you ask for?

Don’t trust them!!! I commute every day over the hill with my kids 5,3, and 1. Have had every service done on time and all preventative car. Follow every recommendation and have made a point to tell them that I want my car safe due to commute with kids… Mechanic rethreaded bolt he broke off with smaller bolt that couldn’t be tightened. (On 90,000 mile service that cost 1700.00 and took 2 days… they actually charged me labor for the work they did that could have killed my family) Car lost all power and shut down on HWy 80 near Tahoe going 60 MPH. 4 hour trip alone with 3 kids and dog became 9 hour nightmare including an hour as a sitting duck on HWY 80 without power or air conditioning. Stuck in Tahoe 5 extra days while car in Carson city NV. Endangered my kids lives and my own… Still scared driving my car and check engine light is on despite repairs and 2 days at Toyota dealership in Santa Cruz.

This place was awesome. Ken was great very helpful and attentive. I was going to replace the front brakes on the weekend but after doing the math that would have taken me two days. Getting all the parts ordered and picking them up then the time and labor to do all the work. Forget about it! Well anyways, I was out at lunch and saw this place and gave it a try. Ken was able to take it right away and i went back to work and in two hours he had replaced both rotors and pads, rotated the tires, changed the oil, changed the air filter and topped off the fluids and gave me an estimate for my next service in about 10,000 miles when I’ll probably need a tuneup. In that time he also ran into a few problems removing one of the rotors and he put another mechanic on it and continued with the work to insure I had my car back by the time I got off work.
If I have any others problems with my cars and I can take it over the hill this is where I am going.
Great service, speedy work and reasonable prices.
