Santa Cruz Weekly

I love the Santa Cruz Weekly and have been reading it (almost) every week since I moved here almost 7 years ago. I have noticed that since their new editor came on last summer the quality of the stories has improved. They always have great local stories, and they’re not afraid to throw in a little bit of humor and not take themselves too seriously. I’ve never been even remotely offended by anything they say (and I would consider myself pretty moderate) but if they do sometimes ruffle the feathers of a few people, well, so what? People don’t need to take themselves so seriously.
It’s a physically beautiful paper, too, with a great layout, glossy paper and beautiful colors. I 100% prefer it to Good Times — their ink rubs off on my fingers.
I highly recommend — a great guide to what to do and what’s going on in SC.

I look forward to every Wednesday because that is when this local paper comes out! The first thing I do is read the cartoon that is on the last page, Open Letters. It is so, so funny! This is a very nice informational paper about happenings around Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas. I rarely feel offended reading this newspaper, or feel that it speaks to only one or two segments of the vast Santa Cruz community. I seriously believe that it has something for everyone. The new format for the cover is very attractive. I hope they continue to publish this newspaper for many, many years.

It used to be a great alternative to the other «alternate» weekly rag, «Good Times.» It still does have more edge, but, under the stewardship of Traci Hukill, it has gradually become just another megaphone for the small percentage of Santa Cruzans: the Greenies, cycling anarchists, marauding UCSC students, sycophant City Council and Supervisors members, etc. and doesn’t rely on fact and truth-​seeking, but on touting the same tired hippie radical line that relies more on wishful rhetoric than practical and accurate story-​telling.

I’ve actually found the Santa Cruz Weekly to be less caustic than their counterparts down here running the Monterey Weekly. As a conservative individual, I find both papers to be offensive. Yes, they run the same left wing propaganda. The Santa Cruz Weekly does get an extra star because they do run local stories which are slightly more interesting. Outside of that, they both still print on the same ink that rubs off into your hands. Yeech. So, the best purpose for the Weekly is to line your bird cage. But it’s free, so nothing really lost! :D

I love this ‘little’ paper. It’s a sweet lil’ publication for anyone living in or visiting Santa Cruz County. It’s at almost any coffee shop… It’s a good place to find insightful writing about news, culture and events in and around Santa Cruz County.
