History
Established in 2010.
The Victorian was constructed in the late 1890’s as a single family home, on the northern end of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. The last member of the family, Delia, turned the family home into a hotel for backpackers. After her death, in 1974, the house was moved to its current location, and extensive renovations turned it into the current event space on the main and second floors. Below ground, however, remained the same dark area, untouched for years.
In the summer of 2010, an enterprising group of individuals, all standouts in their field, saw the potential beneath the Victorian. They entered downstairs with flashlights and paintbrushes in hand, and spent the next month making their vision come true. In July 2010, the Basement Tavern was opened… and the staid Victorian house has never been the same.
Just ask Delia. She’s VIP downstairs… when she chooses to leave her 2nd floor room.
