Eugene Field, DDS

I was a patient of Dr Field circa 1996 – 2004. In that time, I had three root canals and crowns put in, along with a bunch of fillings.
I recently went to a different dentist, and she was rather shocked at the poor quality of the work done by Dr Field. It turns out I now need to have three teeth pulled due to the sub-​par root canals and shoddy crowns, plus a crown rebuilt.
I will also add to the chorus re: the attitude of some of the front office staff. While I never suffered anything more than brusqueness, I overheard one of the women being terribly rude and condescending to other patients.
I also didn’t appreciate being scolded as if I were a child for not flossing properly. The Drs. need to realize that patients already often feel enough guilt and shame about dental care — we don’t need more finger-​waggling and tut-​tutting piled on top of our self-​inflicted shame.
I really wish I’d sought more competent care back then. I’m paying the price now.

I was a brand new patient directed to go there by my insurance company. My appointment for teeth cleaning was at 9:00AM on a Monday morning. First front desk worker showed up about 8 minutes late. She was rude, cold, and demanding, as she filled in for the real receptionist, who arrived about 12 minutes late. Finally, at 9:24AM, the X-​ray lady, «Delorous», I think, called me in to take X-​rays. Delorous was the only warm and friendly worker there. After 4 minutes of X-​rays, I had to sit on a dental chair and wait, and wait, and wait. At 10:04AM, Dr. Field finally started working with me, a full hour after my appointment. I had made a 9:00AM appointment just to avoid any such delays. I got no apology from him — he just shrugged off my complaints about making me wait. He was aloof, uncaring, and seemed unnecessarily rough in prodding my mouth, looking for cavities. Teeth cleaning was adequate at best.
Bottom line: Service is uncaring and of questionable value. I would not recommend this dentist to anyone.

I gave one star because of Dr. Chang who works under Dr. Field. She’s a great dentist, quite honestly, she’s the only one that’s keeping this place alive. And I live in DTLA just to see her. Unfortunately, Dr. Chang and my schedule doesn’t work well together. But that wasn’t the last straw of moving to a different dentist. Mind you, I will do anything I can to see Dr. Chang’s but one day, I couldn’t make it work so I made my appt with Dr. Field. I had a cleaning appt. and took the day off to see him. As soon as he saw me, he took a glance of my teeth and suddenly said I needed a deep cleaning. I’ve been going every 3 months to get my teeth cleaned and suddenly, he propose for me to get a deep cleaning??? I remembered they were busy that day, he basically shove me off and told me to get another appt. There was no way I was driving back to DTLA and get another appt. The front desk suggested to come back a few hours later. No Way! I got all my records and I was smoking throigh my ears with anger. I told the front desk that I’m still entitled to my appt. for the cleaning. The receptionist still denied me of my appt and assured me he will not see me because of a major procedure with another patient. First of all, don’t give anyone an appt if the doctor is unable to see a patient. That’s what appts are for, you come in for the time slotted for the doctor to see you. I saw Dr. Field as an opportunist to get money from you as much as possible. If you want a good experience and you don’t want to get scammed, go find yourself a different dentist. This office will not work with you. Dr. Field should be ashamed of himself.

I’ve been going to Dr. Field for about 5 years now and I’m really pleased with my experience thus far. His staff is always friendly — they even make sure to refill your parking meter for you (some of the meters in the area have a 40 minute max) — and its easy to get appointments. I hate calling a Dr. and being told I can’t get in for the next 3 months! Here, I can call a few days ahead and know they’ll fit me in. Dr. Field has corrected work from a previous shoddy dentist (poorly executed fillings in my molars) and I haven’t had any problems since. He’s always gentle with my mouth and I never leave uncomfortable or in pain. I also love that there are cute designs painted on the ceilings in all of the exam rooms — when you’re stuck lying in a chair on your back for some period of time, it’s really nice to have something fun to look at.
With respect to the comments the other posters have made, I have never had anyone at the office try to sell me anything. In fact, I once complained that I thought my teeth needed to be whitened and Dr. Field assured me that they didn’t — he took out a tooth color chart type thing and held it up to my mouth to show me that they were already towards the end of the whiteness scale: «if you whiten them more, they’ll look unnaturally bright.» I really apprecaite that kind of honestly, because I was prepared to shell out for a tooth whitening kit.
I’ve never had anything but a pleasant experience at Dr. Field’s office and I highly reccommend him if you need a dentist in the West LA/​Santa Monica area.

I’ve been a loyal patient of Dr. Fields for several years. Even after I moved to the other side of the city, I still come back. Friendly staff who know you by name. Great service. Always a great experience. I’ve used him for general cleanings as well as cosmetic work and he always does a great job. Highly recommend.

As my first review was «filtered» I’m trying this, again:
I’ve been a patient of Dr. Eugene Field for several years now and have only the highest praise for the man and his staff. Nobody enjoys going to the dentist but everyone in this office is so efficient and friendly that my visits are always as brief as they are painless. Dr. Field is very generous with his time, always inquires as to how I’m doing — as a person — and on more than one occasion has shared with me what I found to be profoundly worthwhile advice. In short, if you have to go to a dentist — and we all do – go here.

I was a patient of Dr. Fields for 2 years and i have to say that his staff may be the rudest people in the industry. They constantly try to sell you stuff. They asked me to find another dentist because I Told them that I had found teeth whitening at another office at a cheaper price. This is only after his Nazi office manager asked ME… on another occasion he stuck a needle so far into my bf gums that it hurt him for a week. Dr Fields office is nice and clean but believe me you will eventually pay for the gadgets. He is rude and very short and unless you are buying something he and his staff are despicable.

Unbelievable, but true. I saw another dentist and wanted to go back to Field and Field. No go. They won’t accept you back if you go to another dentist. So very odd, and a bad business practice.

I have been going to Dr. Field for 4 years. He is the nicest and most gentle dentist. His staff is so sweet and his location is very easy to get to. I owe my friend who referred me to him majorly. He is the best!
Sadly Dr Field has retired and handed his practice over to Dr Chen who lacks his bedside manner and sweet demeanor. Try a new dentist before seeing Dr Chen.
Dr Field you will be missed.

I go to Dr. Field’s office solely because of distance, certainly NOT for the service nor expertise.
If you MUST go there, the only professional and gental dentist there is Dr. Chan, so check out her schedule and request for her.
The only good thing is there are the state-​of-​the-​art equipments. They always cease to amaze me with all that fancy machines. That’s where your $$ at work.
I had my teeth cleaned recently by Dr. Field, he was ALWAYS rough with my mouth. He poked the novocaine syringe into my mouth and gum so hard that my mouth sored and ached 2.5 days after the novocaine wear off. He manages to inform you about sensitive spots, while pushing into my eye balls a few times were uncomfortable and uncalled for. All he has to do is move his chair for crying out loud. Over all, he is just rough and un-​sensitive to patient awareness.
Dr. Field and his intimidating staff are always trying to sell you something either you don’t need or your insurance doesn’t cover. They always push for teeth whitening and white cavity fills on my non-​problematic silver filling due to cosmetic reasons.
Scare tactic is a norm there. He informs you how harmful and bad the silver filling are and you MUST change them even there’s no problem. Not to mention that he threats you about going to other dentists.
Quote: «If you ever go see other dentist, we’ll drop you off our patient list instantly and never take you back as a patient EVER again!» Seriously?! Is that even legal? I’ve been going to dentist all my life and never heard of such thing! They should be thankful we’re going to see them especially during this economic hardship.
I feel belittled every time I visit Dr. Field’s office. I’m a grown adult, I really don’t need the attitudes and belittlement. After all, I’m paying way over price for a OK service. Who needs this?
Now that I’ve switched to PPO, I’m going elsewhere seeking for friendly and professional dentist who cares! Any suggestions?
One last thing, they don’t manage to tell you they’re not part of the PPO network… so I ended up paying an arm and a leg for the teeth cleaning.
It was my fault not to stay on top of my policy. But a heads up notice would be nice and honest from the office. All I can say is that Field and Field is just money gauging dentist group. Visit them if you like to be belittled and have a so so service.

I have a terrible fear of dentists. Something about pointy things in my mouth, and those incredibly uncomfortable x-​rays. To that point, I hadn’t been to a dentist for 10 years or so. Of course, when you do that, bad things happen. In February I cracked a molar and needed an implant. Dr. Field had been assigned to me by my insurance company, and he referred me to Dr. Moshrefi for the periodontic work (awesome review of him to follow). After all of that work was done — including some major gum restoration — I was VERY protective of my gums, and anxious about going in for the multiple cavities that were found in the process of x-​raying my entire mouth.
I was a nervous wreck when I arrived at the office for the final stage of my implant and a few cavities. Dr. Field was so kind. I got the gas, and he gave me some sunglasses to wear so I couldn’t see the pointy tools. I put my iPod on loud, and we began. And then it was over. It wasn’t fun, but It was professional and careful, and I was happy with the results.
I have been back several times since, and Dr. Field always asks me how I’m doing, and is careful with my mouth — as much as you can be with pointy tools and big needles. He is fully aware of my phobias (which have decreased significantly over the year). All of my cavities have been filled, and I’ve had a deep clean to get rid of 10 years of plaque buildup.
Anyway, I have been very satisfied with the work Dr. Field and his team have done for me. Going to the dentist is stressful, but Dr. Field and his team make it better.

I’ve never had a worse experience at a dentist. I felt like they were trying to drill my mouth up left and right… just to make a buck.
Besides all this, the front desk staff, is unfriendly and i just get the impression they hate their jobs and make no attempt to disguise this from you.
Today I tried to get a copy of my x-​rays so i could move on to a more honest and inviting office. Again, the unfriendly staff there told me I couldnt pick them up because they were digital. Ok fine… email? Nope!
It will cost me $ 55 to have the x-​ray tech to make a CD of them.
When i told her that I paid for the x-​rays and they belong to me. She got even more rude, and that i was mistaken… and told me that she only got $ 5 from my insurance company for the x-​rays.
I admit I’m no dental insurance expert. but there must be a nice way to explain this to maybe help me understand the process?
I will never go back.

Worst (i.e. rudest/​most incompetent) office staff ever award!!! I read the other reviews before visiting this office, but it was close to home and accepted my insurance. Never again. The dental work here is definitely not worth (read — will likely have to be redone elsewhere) enduring the mistreatment you are bound to receive at the hands of the office «manager» and her little minion the «receptionist».
I use quotes because they neither receive nor manage. This is what they will do for you (they have done all of these lovely things for me), however:
— see you at least one hour after your scheduled appointment
— cancel your appointment without notifying you,
— lie and claim to have left you voicemail canceling the appointment, — make replacement appointment for a time not agreed to and then accuse you loudly in front of other patients of not listening to what they «told you»,
— rudely lecture and abuse you next time you make an appointment and ask them to read the time and date back to you (even though you made no mention of all the other time of yours wasted by these two b%^*%es
Oh yeah — I almost forgot to mention that the office looks dirty and the hygienists don’t remove their gloves before touching things like pens and clipboards or subsequently putting their hands back in your mouth. I have complained to my dentist at this office several times, but the practice continues. I keep reminding myself that I have a strong immune system. ..

I’ve tolerated this office for some pretty lame reason. Location was convenient to work and the environment was pleasant. But after two years of poor communication (I’ve driven to the office on several occassions only to find out my procedure was cancelled) shoddy, work (a bridge was placed on a root canal tooth without an xray first — long story short– now the tooth’s root canal needs to be retreated and cannot be accessed due to the bridge and was told by Dr Field it would need to be extracted) and an office staff that has no clue what is going on but constantly talks about procedures like they do — gggrrr. Their inhouse endodonist is apparently on the payroll as well as he says one thing and then does another without bothering to have a consultation (Ive stopped procedures midway to find out what they were doing) So quick advice — DONT EVER GO TO THIS OFFICE EVER!

So today I open my mailbox to find a letter from Dr. Field’s office terminating my account with them. It instructed me to find a new dentist «immidiatley». This just goes to show how vindictive and unprofessional these people are. Plus, if you can’t master basic spelling, I’m not sure I’d trust you to handle my teeth. Good riddance.

My husband and I have been patients of the Fields (Eugene & his wife, Victoria — also a DDS) for a few years now. Their facilities are clean and state of the art. Lots of marble and computerized xray machines. Also they’ve had a couple very nice hygienists.
However, for some reason, every time one of us has visited there, we’ve ended up with a canker sore. I think the docs use a heavy hand with the pick and that’s the reason they tend to cut too far into the gum or inner lip. Also, the doctor once tried to give a the big sell on using a white filling ($ 200) rather than the silver kind (free under my insurance) to fill in a molar cavity. His reason was that it was more aesthetically beautiful, but who besides my dentist ever looks that far into my mouth anyway, right? And when I said ‘no’ to the upsell filling, he got very cold and rough with my mouth afterward… in fact I had to ask for more novocaine.
The craziest thing is that my insurance changed briefly through the company I work for, I was no longer covered under him and I had to leave his practice for a little while and see another dentist. Now I have a new plan where I’m eligible to see him again. I wasn’t thrilled about going back to him, but at least he already had my records. However, when I called his office today to try to make an appointment, I was told by the receptionist that the doctor has a bizarre policy of NOT ACCEPTING PATIENTS BACK ONCE THEY LEAVE HIS PRACTICE TO GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR. Huh? What’s that all about? So I had to spend an hour on the phone with my dental plan scrambling to find a new dentist.
That pretty much sealed the idea in my mind that this doctor is more than just a little weird. Definitely not worth the hassle. I’m sure you can find better care for your teeth (and better consideration as a patient) elsewhere.

Dr. Field is a great dentist. He has filled a few cavities (too much sugar, too little flossing…) for me and fixed a botched crown that I’d gotten from another dentist in SM. I never have trouble getting the 9am appointment (though for those who need 8AM, I think they only offer that slot one morning a week). Dr. Field is very personable and remembers me every time I come in. As for the bad reviews — maybe they took the doc’s humor the wrong way? Not sure — I’ve always had good experiences with him.

I went with my phobic boyfriend and he treated him very badly. He tried to shame him in front of me to get him to take better care of his teeth. When my bf told him the drilling was very painful, he said «you’re a big guy you can handle it.» My bf ended up more traumatized than he was to begin with. Bravo, Dr. Field.

I just had my check-​up with Eugene Field, and it was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly, and when things were running a bit behind, the staff kept me informed.
Eugene works with his wife, Victoria, and I found them through another not-​to-​be-​named review site, being reviewed highly. They fall under my Tonik Blue Cross PPO plan for those who have similar health insurance plans.
Eugene was kind, informative, and it really was a pleasure to have him working on my teeth. He was very upfront with my options and the costs associated with those options. No funny business! I had one cavity, and he took a picture of it so I could see exactly where it was!
I felt like I was in good hands and, more importantly, that my teeth were. =)

I didn’t have Eugene… but I had a doctor that works underneath him named Dr. Nami. She was brutal, as was the assistant who took my x-​rays. Both were rough and insistent that I cut my mouth open to make their jobs easier. Suck!!!
