L.A. Piano Tuning

He solved a problem with my piano that two other people couldn’t figure out. Efficient, friendly and professional. Did a great job for me.

Dave came the very next day after I called him. He checked out my Yamaha upright from the 1970s and said it would need new strings in the future, but that changing piano strings is not cost-​effective, since it costs more than a new piano! But that mine, while starting to show some signs of corrosion and age, were still good. He convinced me to buy and he installed a humidity regulator — a kind of warming tube that dries out the inside atmosphere of a piano to keep the humidity levels even. He said this is the main thing that ages strings and makes pianos go out of tune — having the string tension change due to fluctuations in humidity, and since we both live near the ocean in California, even more important for this piano. He left it for a week to stabilize, after which he came and tuned it very quickly. Piano sounds great again! He also vacuumed out the cobwebs from the inside, since I never think to clean in there. Very reliable and helpful.

I chose David because he lives close to me. I’ve never hired a piano tuner before, so i have no basis of comparison. But judging David the same as any service provider, I’m quite happy with his service. Booking was quick and easy, and the appointment was only 48 hours later.
David is friendly and personable (although i think he should have asked permission to turn off my television when I was in the kitchen getting him a drink, but that’s not enough to deduct a star for).
I only needed the bare minimum service, enough to get the piano ready to sell. The job took 90 minutes and cost $ 125, and David mentioned that he was throwing in $ 25 of additional service for free. Much appreciated ! Shamefully, I have no way of judging the quality of the tuning job, although i do know that a stuck key is working again.
I’m happy to recommend David to anyone who needs a piano tuner, but I hope you have more experience and knowledge than I do so that you may judge for yourself.

David did a great job tuning my my grandmother’s 1968 Kawaii piano and also fixed some intermittent sticky keys. He is very knowledgeable on pianos as well as music. Very nice and professional. I would definitely recommend!

David did a great job tuning our piano last month. The piano had not been tuned in several years, and it was a hard-​to-​tune spinet. The job took longer than anticipated, and David was persistent and diligent in his efforts. He also arrived promptly and was easy to work with to schedule an appointment. Very satisfied.

David is great. Prompt, efficient, and friendly. He even gives you an impromptu concert at the end based on 3 notes that you choose on your piano. Fun! Highly recommend.

my boyfriend and i bought a old junior cable piano and it needed a tuning and maybe some other things fixed.
david came by and right away we felt really comfortable about him in our home and trusted he was a piano expert. david tuned our piano perfectly, and fixed some other parts (dont as me what they were! ha! my man’s the musician). david spent hours at our house working and even charged us less than then amount of time he was there. everything is all fixed up perfectly and our piano is like good as new.
we might need another tuning, as many older pianos do. and we will 100% be contacting david again. and recommend him to anyone who asks. thank you david!

I called David for a piano tuning after reading the Unilocal reviews. He kindly examined the piano, declared the instrument a quality one, but said it needed re-​stringing. This I already knew. But his approach and professionalism convinced me that it should be done, now, and by him.
Technically proficient, thorough, even ordered special felts made by the piano maker, rather than substituting what was available. Highly recommend.

Came across this piano tuner via Unilocal search. Turns out he lives very close to me. Scheduling was convenient. David was friendly, but serious about the job. He noted what my problems were and fixed them. He also found and explained problems that I was not aware of. I really appreciated his focus while doing the tuning. Turns out David is also a performer and teacher. After he was done, he played a bit for our kids, which was endearing. I found the price reasonable for the service. Most importantly, I don’t think the piano has ever sounded so good.

I was so excited to find, purchase, and secure moving for my new vintage piano. Then, in a triumphant non-​climax, it just sat in my living room — gorgeous, but unplayable — being muddy and painfully, painfully out of tune. I began what became a daunting day of trying to find a suitable technician to tune and adjust my vintage lady-​beast.
She’s a restored 70s Helpinstill «portable» electric grand. Electric pickups — but real strings, real hammers, real soundboard… real weird. A lot of tuners I called seemed confused by these products («No — it’s electric, not electronic — of course I’m not calling you to have an electronic piano tuned!»). Very frustrated, I finally found David in a recommendation and gave him a call.
I knew I was in good hands when David mentioned having worked on Yamaha CP’s and Wurlies before. He even knew that Kawaii had a brief go at making stage pianos in yesteryear. Phew, relief! For instruments that were originally meant to be road-​worthy and solid, many of these gems have aged into persnickety pianos that require skillful care. Because of his knowledge and experience, I felt at ease with David adjusting the piano as soon as I hung up the phone with him.
David was able to schedule an appointment within a couple days. He is a total pro: on time, friendly, and very knowledgeable. I have no idea how long my piano was out of service before I bought it, but it was not in the best playing condition. There were some mechanical issues (stuck keys, etc.) that needed addressing and he was up front about the additional labor cost and fixed them quickly and well. There were a few other unexpected things that needed attention — rust removal on the strings, an adjustment to raise the whole overall tuning to A440 — and David explained the necessity and the cost on the spot. I didn’t feel like I was being needlessly upsold for the sake of raising the bill. David is very honest and thorough, and his suggestions were things that were overlooked in the initial restoration and needed to be performed to complete the mechanical restoration.
I’m thankful I had David to notice these oversights and bring the piano into great playing shape. The final bill was shockingly reasonable, especially for the time and attention he spent on the instrument. Moreover, it’s always nice to find someone who’s delighted to get to service a vintage item, rather than being inconvenienced by its unusual nature. David has a great attitude in this department, and I look forward to having him keep my new baby in service!

David did a very good job of cleaning and tuning my piano. In addition to being a good tuner, he is also a very good musician. He takes his work very seriously I would use him again and recommend him.
