Roxy DeCou, MSW,BCD

Roxy was a referral from a friend. I met her several years back. All I can say is that for some reason I always think about her and our sessions that we had. Which tells me, she had left an impression on me. She’s the type that will tell you how she sees it wo sugar coating anything. And that’s why I really am fond of her. She is all truth. I miss her. I hope one day, I’ll have another session with her once again.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! That is what this amazing woman will help YOU accomplish and that is what she has done for so many people.
I must emphasize and agree with Lon, that these negative reviews of Roxy are ridiculous and unfair and should be ignored completely. If any of those people had kept and open mind and stuck with Roxy their lives would transform. To judge someone on one session is ludicrous, especially in regards to something as important as therapy.
If you are lost, struggling or feel hopeless and need some direction in your life I BEG you to call Roxy. My entire life I was lost and able to bullshit therapists and manipulate them to fit with what I thought I needed. Roxy has a no bs approach that is raw and unlike anything I have ever experienced. I have seen dozens of every type of therapist/​psychologist with all of prestigious diplomas on the wall and none of them are as gifted and brilliant as Roxy. NOT EVEN CLOSE!
Most therapists push meds and lip service… ROXY PUSHES SELF-​ACCEPTANCE AND TRANSFORMATION. She has helped me grow into a man that I love and am very proud of and she can make that happen for you too… so what are you waiting for?!

Roxy is extremely blunt, which is helpful if you need some tough love. But there is a difference between tough love and just being mean. At one point she asked me, «I mean, come on, how old are you?!» Implying that I was acting childish. Who says that!!! Especially in therapy! While some people might find that helpful, I only found it unprofessional, rude, and unproductive. Even if I was handling some life issues with less maturity than I would have liked, that feedback did nothing to make me feel more comfortable and trusting to work through them on my own or with her. She has some good advice like just acting better, in the way you know you should, even if it feels hard because better actions communicate and create better situations and interpersonal relationships. And I think her goal of faster healing is laudable. However, for me, it was putting the cart before the horse — trying to force me to feel and act better without allowing any exploration of why I didn’t. And, she did it with harshness, much too much confidence, and critical unkindness.

Being introduced to Roxy is one of the godsend’s of my life. I had seen a few therapists at different times and found all of them completely worthless. I would do the talking and they would ask me how I felt about what I had just said. Worthless. Roxy is incredibly intuitive and can get to the root of a problem very quickly. My therapy consisted of sessions where she did most of the talking and lots of tough love was performed. l felt belittled at times in the early stages of the process because my thoughts about myself and situation were often discounted. Change isn’t easy and until a level of trust is established, when someone is trying to change you it can feel like an attack. But I came to Roxy because I wanted to change! As I learned to trust her even slightly, I started to notice new truths about myself that encouraged me to trust further. Roxy had actually known me better than I knew myself fairly early in the process, so while I felt belittled at the time for being unable to speak my mind, Roxy approached it that way because she knew what I was saying was the same garbage I had been telling myself for 30+ years! It was time for me to listen. Roxy would be the first to tell you that she is unorthodox. She doesn’t like most therapists, much less run her practice like them. Roxy is a «life coach» who happens to also be an accredited therapist. She has had a profoundly positive influence on my life and while she may not be for everybody, she genuinely tries to help all the people that set foot in her office.

I would not recommend Roxy for therapy. I saw her on several occasions and found that more than once she had forgotten significant information I had shared with her about my personal life. I really think a therapist should be focused on their patient and build on knowledge they are given. I found I had to repeat «my story» a couple of times and remind her why I had gone to her in the first place.
I am fairly mild mannered and I found her to be combative at times, in a way that made me feel I had to be careful with what I said and how I said it. I don’t think it’s good to be guarded when seeing a therapist. A couple of times she cut me off and didn’t want to hear what I had to say. This is her tough love approach, which not everyone responds well to.
Overall she did give me some good direction but the last time I saw her she seemed really out of it. I don’t know why she was this way but I felt like she was looking right through me. I thought maybe she was bored or didn’t feel well. It was disconcerting to say the least.

After reading the previous positive comments, I decided to set up an appointment for my sister with Roxy. Over the last month Roxy has helped my sister tremendously, and I am so grateful for that.
In response to the most recent 2 star review, Roxy can be a tough nut sometimes, but she really does know her stuff and I would highly recommend her. Roxy really takes the no BS approach to a session and really gets down to your core issues.

Disclaimer: This is based on an initial phone conversation, not an actual session which is why I gave her two stars for a benefit of the doubt, otherwise I rate one star based on my experience.
It’s my first time looking for someone I can see regularly and I called a bunch of local therapists covered by my health insurance. I left a message for Roxy after 6pm and she returned my call within a couple hours which was great.
I only had two questions (these are paraphrased):
Do you do evening appointments?
–Yes.
What, if you’re able to describe, would you say is your style or approach?
-…I don’t think I could summarize what I do. *I’ve been doing this for over 40 years* and could not just «sum up» what I do. I don’t think you could sum up yourself–
Me: Actually… yes, I believe I could.
–Well I refuse to limit myself in a few words and you can go and find someone else who is willing to «sum themselves up» and take a meeting with them.
Me: (politely & passive aggressive) That’s a good idea, thank you.
Prior to speaking with her, I had spoken to a couple other therapists and when I asked the same question, some answered straight away with «cognitive» or «pragmatic» and others answered «I work with what the client needs» which is non-​specific, yet no one gave me an attitude like she did. Very unprofessional. Maybe she does better in-​person, but I felt so horrible after that call that I didn’t feel I could trust her with actual details of my life.

Unfortunately… I didn’t feel the same as these reviews, which is sad as they helped me to schedule my appointment with Roxy! I also was looking for someone blunt and clear and effective — I don’t need someone to bitch to, I have my girlfriends for that. I wanted someone who would call me on my BS and help me work through it. Unfortunately, I didn’t find this in the right way with Roxy. I found that once she made up her mind that something was an issue, there was no discussion and she actually said «I don’t need to hear your argument. You paid to listen to me.» My argument being of course that I didn’t believe that just because one parent drank in my childhood meant I had a messed up childhood — in fact, I had a rather idyllic childhood — she instead told me that ‘alcoholics are addicts and addicts shouldn’t have children.’ I didn’t find that terribly professional; nor did I find it professional that she repeatedly brought up her OWN childhood issues, which I think played a large role in her insisting that my childhood had to have been effed up, instead of the great one I had — here I just wanted to talk about my marriage and loss of my father I suffered two years ago, and she wanted to say that my parents never should have had me because her parents were so dysfunctional. Not what I was looking for in a therapist. (Also — noticed the overwhelming aroma of a certain smokeable substance as she walked in — not that I’m opposed, but I am when you’re supposed to be helping me. I can get stoned and work my own problems out, thanks).

I came to Roxy not knowing what to expect, I had moved to LA about a year ago on my own, had just gotten out of a really bad relationship and I knew I needed help in getting back on my feet. I got a list of names of local therapists from my insurance company and I called a good handful, Roxy being the only one that got back to me. She called me back the same day and was even able to fit me in later that exact day. I knew at that point she was going to be different.
At first it was a little alarming, how upfront and blunt she is with you. I was always used to going to the kind of therapy where you sit and talk and talk and talk for an hour about how you feel and what you think you should be doing, but with Roxy it’s not like that all. She gets the nitty-​gritty information she needs to know and in an instant, she has your situation laid out in-​front of you plain and dry, no fluffs or excuses, completely raw. She has a strong belief that as long as you become aware, you will transform on your own without effort. It’s so simple, yet no other person, let alone therapist, has ever introduced that thought to me. Every single time I walk out of her office, I feel as if a weight has been lifted. There are many times I feel so light and weight-​free, I end up laughing on my walk way back to my car, which is NEVER a situation I thought I’d ever have after speaking with my therapist. It’s liberating.
Roxy’s so intuitive and you can tell she’s been doing what she does for a long time and been doing it well. I’ve only seen her for 4 sessions so far but I already feel more in-​tune with myself and my life. She’s revealed so much insight into my own life in only 4 hours, that I myself couldn’t in 20 years. She’s incredibly remarkable. I wouldn’t ever think about going to see someone else, she really is everything and then some that you need in a therapist.
