History
Established in 2007.
At String Project|LA (SPLA) we believe each student is an artist. That’s why we’ve created the Alternative String Group (ASG), the most innovative and inspiring experience for young artists offered anywhere in the country. Far more than just a performing ensemble, the ASG offers young string players the opportunity to improvise, to play music they enjoy, to work as a team, and to express themselves through their instruments.
Our fall Alternative String Groups began meeting in 2007. Since then, we’ve been having a great time working on every style of music from Freddie Hubbard and U2 to Dr. Dre and Rage Against the Machine. ASG students have enjoyed regular live performances at the old Jazz Bakery in Culver City and Pasadena Jazz Institute. Our tradition of live performances continues in new venues as part of our curriculum. It’s not too late to join! No experience playing in alternative styles or improvising is required.
Meet the Business Owner
Mr. Szekely and Mr. Anderson S.
Business Owner
Jacob Szekely is one of the few legitimate improvising string players in the world, and one of only a handful of cellists who has developed a jazz/funk concept on his instrument. Jacob is also active as a composer and arranger and has collaborated with a wide range of artists and ensembles from string quartets and world music groups, to commissions for chamber orchestra and children’s choirs.
As co-founder and music director of String Project Los Angeles, established in 2006, Robert enjoys teaching the art of improvisation and encouraging musical creativity in young string players. He is a violin coach for the Santa Monica High School orchestras, and has led performances of his works with the Mira Costa High School symphony, the Creative String Workshop youth orchestra, and with the Elemental Strings program.
Robert is a faculty member of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in the new Popular Music program, teaching jazz and alternative violin.
