Copperfield’s Books is your local independent bookstore located in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center in Santa Rosa (next to Ross). We carry books, gifts, and magazines in a wonderful bookstore setting. Our booksellers are readers who love to talk books and help you find what you are looking for. We also have a café that serves Peet’s coffee and specialty drinks and pastries. We host author events year round at this store, from Garth Stein to Jacqueline Winspear to John Ash. Check our events calendar for what’s coming. Most of our events are free in-​store events but we also do offsite ticketed events with authors like Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice, Khaled Hosseini, and more!

History

Established in 1981.

Two booksellers with a dream of starting a bookstore opened the first Copperfield’s Books in Sebastopol in 1981. Since then, with the enthusiasm of our readers, Copperfield’s has expanded to communities in three counties with stores in Healdsburg, Napa, Calistoga, Petaluma, Montgomery Village, and recently, San Rafael. Each store has its own character reflecting that of its reading community. In Montgomery Village, we have a number of mystery and thriller readers, many who participate in Copperfield’s longest running in-​store book club. This store started on the Boudin Bakery side of the shopping center, but its ancient building had to be knocked down, and so we moved a few years ago to the other end of the shopping center next to Ross and Lucky.

I hate to say it but — if you are going to charge me full-​price books I could just easily get more cheaply on-​line, then I expect superior customer service and selection, neither of which is a hallmark of the montgomery village store. You would think that an independent bookseller would try to stay on top of books in the news but I rarely find the books discussed in the San Francisco Chronicle, for instance, available in the store. Too often, when I’ve sought to order them, I am told that it will take weeks — something that seems very odd in today’s mobile marketplace. In order to compete with the absolute bonanza of books available on line, Copperfields is going to have to offer something special. They could start by hiring booksellers who actually read; people who are in the position to suggest interesting, appealing titles based on what I’ve already read or on the description of the likes and dislikes of the person I’m purchasing a gift for. That has not been my experience so far. Sebastopol and Petaluma do a much better job. Perhaps Montgomery Village should take a page from their books!

Not so happily ever after.
I stopped in here a couple of times in the past and bought a book or two. The atmosphere is actually quite inviting and while the prices are full publisher retail (can’t really slight them for that) I was more than willing to support and independent business. Well, the last time I was in here, I was told (in not so polite terms) to stop sitting on the floor and go to a chair. I sat on the floor in front of a shelf of books I was actively looking through; at first I simply squatted, but this seemed silly after having been there sampling books for several minutes. Only *then* was I approached.
I understand if there was a possibility for an obstruction, but there was none.
Plus, a few things didn’t add up.
Firstly, I’d never once been offered assistance by staff before this encounter; no one ever bothered to ask if I needed help with anything. And secondly, this store was empty! I guess I’ve got a chip on my shoulder, but this seemed more like a staff begrudged by the fact that a younger person in a hoodie (oh no!) was clouding up an atmosphere that understandably gears more toward older clientele. Anyway, I spent a few bucks here but I don’t care to be hassled rather than helped, in an empty store.
Sorry to say I’m going back to Barnes & Noble and Treehorn.

Kudos to Santa Rosa in general for «getting it» in 102 degrees and not being stingy with the A/​C! I did not expect to be there in such hot weather, maybe more like 90? Anyway, this was the 4th place I looked to find Postcards with pictures of Santa Rosa on them, Not San Francisco, etc. The young woman waiting on me even helped me look through the rack. And when I needed a rest room, they were very nice about it even though I was just buying postcards. Of course, on the way to the back, I was able to see that I was in a place with an extensive selection even though it’s not a huge store. They have a Coffee/​Tea Lounge area, too. And they sell other little «goodies» like hand held magnifying «glasses» just like miniature reading glasses, for those who only need something for the fine print these days. A Sales Person in another store in Montgomery Village suggested this store, so they seem to have a good co-​operative mind set in this shopping area, helping each other out. and in what other kind of store can you just «hang out»? Usually, you will be looked upon with suspicion if you’re just browsing, so I hope real Book Stores, like Libraries, never go away!

I live a few blocks away and come here two or three times a week. Sadly, the service seems to be degenerating over the last year. About half of the employees are obviously knowledgeable and personable. But, for about a year now, about half of them don’t seem knowledgeable. There was a lot of turnover at that time, too. I don’t know if they started paying their employees less or what. But they seem to be attracting some frighteningly ignorant employees. Even worse, half the time I have a question, they merely say «I don’t know» without bothering to get the answer. The culmination was today. I went to the counter and grabbed the bathroom key like I have a dozen times before over the last two years. Only this time an employee I didn’t recognize stopped me and said, «Sir, you’re going to have to leave your backpack at the counter.» When I asked if this is a new policy, she said, «No, there are signs all over the store. You’ll have to leave your bag at the counter or leave.» I’ve noticed the signs over the years. They inform Montgomery High students that they have to leave their bags at the counter before shopping in the store. But I wasn’t interested in pointing out the obvious (I haven’t been in high school for over 30 years) or debate the store’s signs. So I left. When one of the regular employees asked me what’s wrong, I told her what happened, said the other employee seemed aggressive and rude, and I was leaving. I felt bad, because there is a core of great employees here. But the store’s service has become inconsistent over the last year or so.

Cute small bookstore with Peet’s coffee and places to sit and read. I went in just to get a coffee before getting my nails done and the staff was great and coffee was too. Will be back to look around.

I was really glad to see Copperfield’s in this spot in Montgomery Village. It’s a much more central location than they were in previously and when I didn’t see them in Sebastopol I wondered if they were even still around. Big, clean, attractive store with nicely organized shelves and all kinds of books on all topics. Also the typical accessories of journals, calendars, some fancy papers, cards, soaps and reading glasses. The majority of the store is books though, don’t get me wrong. I picked up a book on sale as well as a card and a miniature button/​pin as gifts for a friend. Staff was friendly and very helpful to those who needed assistance. Though another reviewer was surprised she was not offered assistance without prompting, I felt the atmosphere comfortable and easy to browse in without feeling rushed or watched-​over. I would definitely shop here again. Thank you Copperfield’s!

I have two complaints… earlier in the week I visited the SR store. I walked into the store and was greeted with «you only have a few minutes to shop!» by the lady counting the money from the register. I looked at my watch and it was 8:40. I had twenty minutes. The vibe in the store was not a welcome one. I stayed five minutes then left. Today I decided to try again, I called the SR store around 7:30 pm. the phone rang and then answered «with a customer hold please!»…they didn’t wait for an answer just click and I was on hold… for 14 minutes and 17 seconds to be exact. The least they could have done is taken my phone number and called back. I hung up the phone drove to Barnes and Noble and spent 120.00 on books. You wonder why you are losing business to Amazon and big box stores, this is why! Terrible customer service! I will no longer shop at any of your stores.

An actual bookstore with books!!! Yes they also have Peets! Coffee here. It’s a rarity to see that that reminded me of Barnes & Noble back home. They have a case of bakery goodies but I was good & bypassed. They have a small area to sit, read & eat too.
I almost bought a book; I’m a sucker when it comes to the topic of Chinese astrology. They had a lot of discounted books. I also saw greeting cards, journals, reading glasses, lanyards, socks & other gift items for sale.
I ended up giving this store two stars as no one asked if I needed assistance. I thought that to be very odd.
It looks like they have different events here as well. It’s nice to see that as this type of business is dinosauring-​out but must be doing okay as there is no more Borders to compete nowadays.

I agree with two other reviews of Copperfields’ poor customer service and lack of loyalty to the local community. I have shopped at their stores for over 30 years since living in Santa Rosa. I was coerced to buy their club card for $ 25.00 and also give up my rewards card that I had accumulated over several months. They gave me a reusable shopping bag for my trouble (not lovely). Again today I was reminded of why NOT to shop locale and support your independent bookstore… because they treat customers and the community shabby. Our club card «expired», unaware of that since they do not put a date on the cards, and we were refused the 10% discount it would give us. She was quick to offer to sell us a new card, for $ 25.00 and give us a free $ 5.00 gift card to spend. What sense does that make, you have to spend money to get a discount. No thanks for our loyalty or for shopping with them, just pay us another $ 25.00 and we’ll give you 10% on every purchase. But we would have to spend a total of $ 250.00 over the course of one year in order to break even on the purchase of the club card. I’m sure there are «exclusions» for the 10% discount, such as not applicable for the coffee shop, etc. I previously «shopped» online at Amazon for books, and purchased locally, and now will reverse my actions and shop at Copperfield’s and purchase at Amazon.

I’m so glad this place is still in business with everything switching to digital. There sure is nothing like being able to go into a bookstore and picking up a physical copy of a book. I could spend hours in here!!!

I miss the old location of Copperfields… It was a lot more space and a better selection of books. I also feel customer service over there was a lot better compare to now. Still good, just not as great. I used to go to their old location very often as a young teen, but then I found out about ebay and amazon. So much cheaper! I pay less than $ 10 for hardbook covers online compare to $ 20+ at the stores. But if you want the book now and don’t mind paying twice then go ahead!

I’m a picky girl when it comes to certain things and Copperfield’s is the only place around where I can get my yearly planner (yes, I still use a paper planner — sue me!). Plus I’m a huge bibliophile so any place that sells books is the place for me!
Penelope hit the nail on the head when describing the way Copperfield’s smells… I would only add the smell of books to the list. There is nothing like walking into this place on a Saturday morning to smell coffee, cinnamon and books — three of my favorite things!
I was wandering around inside the store for at least five minutes before staff acknowledged me, which wasn’t a big deal because I had what I came for… but if someone really needed help, it might be more of a problem. And the store isn’t as huge as other big box bookstores but it’s better. Definitely worth shopping here — you get to feel good about helping out a local business AND you get to smell coffee, cinnamon and books!

The staff was not helpful at all and got upset at my mom for telling them she was a teacher and to apply a teacher discount. I usually try to go to copperfields and support local businesses but not at the cost of customer service. The older woman seemed irritated to answer any questions and even ring me up! I guess I will be going to Barnes and nobles.

So, I’m a dummy and didn’t realize they had moved so I drove around for about 15 minutes trying to find them. Sorry, Unilocal– but in this instance, your map wasn’t much help.
I had called ahead and they held a book for me. Yes, it’s more expensive than Amazon. We all know this and are making a conscious effort to shop there anyway.
But, in the last couple of years, Copperfield’s seems to have really gotten hip to the fact that JUST being a local business isn’t enough for people to keep coming and to justify the higher-​than-​online prices. There needs to also be excellent customer service and a warm-​fuzzy feeling while there. I think, at least with this new location, they have nailed it. The service was prompt, the people were very friendly and helpful and they giftwrap!
The overall feel of the place is warm and welcoming. When I have more time, I plan to really peruse that place and probably spend more than I should!

I really wanted to fall in love with Copperfield’s. I love independent book stores, and was thrilled to find one in Santa Rosa. With a Peet’s no less! They are quite friendly.
Unfortunately, they rarely seem to have what I am looking for. I realize they are a small store and can’t carry everything, but I am not talking about obscure books or off-​beat topics. I am referring to mainstream business mags (Newsweek as I recall), that they don’t carry. Not sold out. Just don’t carry it. Also a widely anticipated biography the week it was released. Didn’t have it. Maybe next week.
They are willing to order things for you, which is nice but hardly convenient. I will continue to make them my first stop for general purchases that they might carry. Forget about imports like Formula 1 magazine or Wall*paper. Ultimately I find myself needing to go to Amazon or B&N for a lot of my purchases.
PS — I’m sad that they apparently are no longer allowing dogs in the store.

Last of the local family owned bookstores. Not as grand as the Korporation Krap bookstores, but you’ll enjoy book browsing here better.
Don’t worry there still is the obligatory coffee shop attached — That’s locally owned as well.
