Specialties

Newly christened, The Saugatuck Motel, build on a decades old reputation of family-owned quaintness and hospitality. The resort hails the days of small roadside motels where the owner checked you in, flashing neon signs, large grassy areas, shade trees and cozy rooms. Built in 1953, its developer felt it evoked a spirit of Shangrai-La, a permanently happy land isolated from the outside world, referenced in the novel Lost Horizon. Entering the 5 acre park-like property, it’s easy to understand his point of view.

Only 5 to 10 minutes from Saugatuck/Douglas eateries, galleries and shopping, our location affords a sanctuary from the hustle of these thriving beach towns. A perfect opportunity after a busy day of shopping or beaching to retreat poolside for a cocktail or afternoon dip. If the idea of a good book, local wine, beer or catnap before evening festivities is appealing, take shelter under the shade trees or simply chill and grill listening to tree frogs while watching the star

History

Established in 1953.

Built in the early 1950’s as the Shangrai-La Motel, this 5-acre property has enchanted guests for 60 years with its park-like setting and proximity to all the varied area attractions offered by Saugatuck/Douglas and Holland, Michigan.

Being constructed in the 50’s meant attention to details such as irregular fireglazed brick with sandstone sashes, deep eaves affording protection from the elements and deep sidewalks for «in front of room» lounging and mingling with other guests.

201213 marks the renaissance of this property to its former glory as a premier lodging establishment. The new owners invite you on a journey with room and property renovations to include WIFI, new room furnishings and décor, a redesigned and landscaped pool area, and a new welcoming lobby and hospitality suite with fireplace for lounging and relaxing.

In a nod to the property’s past, enjoy classic amenities such as shuffleboard, horseshoes and croquet.
