Harbor Veterinary House Calls was formed to deliver high quality and compassionate care for the pets in Boston and the surrounding areas.

We offer a unique approach to veterinary medicine by providing comprehensive in home veterinary care for all stages of your pet’s life.

History

Established in 2008.

Dr. Maija Mikkola Curtis («Dr. Mik») grew up in Michigan and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. She graduated with honors from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2000.

Following one of her dreams, she moved to the east coast in 2002. Since then, she has been practicing small animal medicine and surgery on the North Shore. Another dream has been to start a house call practice for the pets in the Boston City and Metro North area. Harbor Veterinary House Calls is the beginning of the dream.

Harbor Veterinary House Calls (HVHC) was the winner of Boston’s Best Veterinarian in 2009 and 2010!

Dr. Mikkola was the runner up (to Angell Memorial Hospital) as the Best Veterinarian in 2008. Harbor Vets was featured in Boat U.S. Magazine for being «Docs at the Dock», Boston Magazine listed Harbor Vets as a vet practice that keeps the tails wagging, and HVHC has been published in the Beacon Hill Times, the Lynn Daily Item, and Beantown Tails.

This is what you call a «good time vet», you know… kind of like good time grandparents. The ones who come round for the good times but aren’t there for the bad.
I have a 16 year old cat that I chose, after some glowing recommendations from friends, to save the stress of having to travel to the vet, especially in the cold weather since she’s a short hair.
Dr. Maija is personable but she flat out refused to even try to squeeze her patient in who was in great distress… she flat out REFUSED and told me to go to one of the emergency clinics… she’s not an emergency vet. No, she is not and never claimed to be but to refuse seeing a patient she’d been seeing for several years? Sorry, that doesn’t cut it with me. After several back and forth emails and her attitude… I fired her. Seeing an emergency case IS PART OF HER JOB AS A VET… if she doesn’t want to do that I suggest she finds a less demanding line of work because after what I had to deal with with her yesterday, I think she is one of the worst with a rotten attitude.
Well, I’m sorry but when someone choses medicine for a career… you GIVE UP YOUR RIGHTS to time off, holidays and all that. You wanted to put yourself in a career that life and death hinges on, YOU ARE ON CALL. She could have fit my cat in, she didn’t want to, that much was crystal clear. Just like someone entering show business goes into it knowing they are giving up any personal life they might have had… same goes for medicine. You cannot have it both ways.
In short, no I would not recommend Harbour Vet. The house calls are convenient but at over $ 200 a visit and her ABSOLUTE REFUSAL to see her patient who was in great distress. I give up on doctors of ALL types… they are all the same… in it for the money and nothing else. VCA, Harbour House Call… there’s no difference, they’re all the same.
Yes, I know my review here is gonna be laughed at with the glowing 4 stars she gets… I’m just giving the flip side of the coin to show you what you are getting into. You are taking a gamble because she will NOT see your pet if you really need her to. VERY VERY VERY disappointed in Maija. SHAME ON YOU LADY!

When you have to make that dreaded but necessary and heart breaking decision like I had two a few years ago with my black lab Dakota these are the ladies to call. They made sure my girl was comfortable and able to pass with her family at home. We never felt rushed and they we so professional and clam throughout. I would highly recommend them to any who too is faced with this sad reality of their pet is suffering.

Dr. Maija is awesome! I’m so happy that I found her on Unilocal.When I found a lump on my 16 year old cat I immediately searched the internet for a vet who makes house calls. I did not want to bring my poor baby out into the cold, in a crate, car, vet office to be poked and prodded and to traumatize her.
Dr. Maija made an appt right away, gave my baby an exam, discussed the issue and short term hospice solution. I am very grateful to have met her and look forward to having her be my permanent vet for all of my other fur babies.

Just had a home visit with Maija and it went great, plus my kitty was much more comfortable being in her own home (especially as she could escape right downstairs after the exam-​LOL). Maija was very calm and gentle with her and explained everything she was going to do to her beforehand. I would highly recommend giving her a try :)!

After learning our sweet cat Willabeest had developed a large tumor in her lung, we spent the next several months watching her activity levels and counting her breaths per minute while holding our own. While far surpassing her original life expectancy per our usual vet, it finally became apparent that the end was near. We didn’t want Willa to suffer, and decided it was time to have her put to sleep.
After some internet research, we came across Harbor Vets. I contacted Maija, and she responded within minutes — expressing her sympathy and letting us know her availability. When I responded and let her know that Willa hadn’t really eaten in several days (and it didn’t look like that was going to change), Maija opened up an additional time slot on an earlier day.
We had our first cat (Stella) put to sleep at home as well, but with another vet that left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths (a little bit to be desired in the «bedside manner»), so we were naturally a little bit nervous this time around. But the second Maija walked into the apartment, we could tell this was going to be different. She is a true professional with an incredibly calming and sympathetic demeanor. She clearly explained each step, encouraged us to take our time, and to make sure we were comfortable with what was about to happen (or as comfortable as you can be when you are saying your final goodbye to a beloved pet). And once it was over, she was very delicate with our deceased feline family member. Her love and understanding of animals really shone through during the entire visit. It was as good an experience as you could have given the circumstances. As with other reviewers, we wish we could give more than 5 stars to Harbor Vets.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Maija is so incredibly kind and compassionate. She helped me with euthanasia of two elderly cats in my home. My cats passed peacefully in a familiar setting with loved ones around, not having to go through the unpleasant and scary experience of being driven to the vet’s office during their final hours. Very difficult for any pet owner to go through, but it was quite a bit easier thanks to her. Highly recommended.

Emily and Maija, the doctors of Harbor Vets, are THE best vets I could’ve hoped for and I’m so grateful they are out there. They’re so well prepared when they come to your home. Their concern for the wellbeing of my furry one is of the utmost importance to them. You can tell when you’ve found a vet that really knows what they’re doing and truly cares and these doctors most surely do.
Yes, you do pay for their travel fee but I feel their other fees are quite comparable to any other vets offices. The travel fee worth every penny to me for the avoidance of aggravating and stressing my cat and myself by putting her through the whole crate and car trauma.
I can’t say enough about this practice. If you have any doubt about trying them out please don’t. You and your animals will see what I’m talking about and you won’t regret it.

They make house calls. Need you know more? Well, ok. The vets are well paid for making house calls. If your FLuffy or Fido is worth it, consider paying $ 40 or more for the house call alone, and about 25% more than the standard vet’s fee for routine exams, and shots. This may be worth saving Fido from a tweedle dee, or tweedle dum when he sees his regular vet.

I love not traumatizing my elderly cat by putting him in the car to go to the vet, but I would if I thought I was compromising on his care. With Harbor Vets I don’t need to because I know he is receiving excellent care at home with Emily an Maija. They are great. They are compassionate, good listeners, and never make me feel rushed when I have questions. It’s been a huge relief for me to work with them. I wish I had found them sooner!

Emily and Maija are two angels. We were SO lucky to find them when we needed help with our sweet pet who was dying. They came to our place on a Saturday evening and lovingly helped us through a very difficult process. They were kind, smart and so respectful of our feelings as we said good-​bye to our family member of 16 years. She had a lovely last meal and was surrounded by family at the end, lying in her favorite soft spot. How nice. She was not in a cold vet’s office, all alone. We love you guys. Can’t say enough about these great women.

Drs. Emily & Maija are amazing. If Unilocal had a 10-​star possibility, that’s what I would give them.
Not only do we use these two talented doctors as our own personal vets for our dogs, we recommend them to every client we can. (We own a doggie daycare.)
They are prompt, polite, welcoming, compassionate, and kind. One of our dogs is a bit of a baby when it comes to doctoring, so Dr. Emily always makes sure she comes early and stays late to play with him and his favorite toy. Now he wiggles with anticipation when he sees her and associates her with only fun stuff.
I really could go on and go about these two awesome vets, but you’d be better off it you just try them yourself!

I love Emily and Maija! And my pets love them, too. We recently moved to Chelsea with two cats (who HATE car rides). When we adopted a dog, we knew getting everyone to the vet was going to be a hassle. We got a great recommendation for Harbor Vets and we are SO pleased!
Our dog recognizes Emily through the window when she’s coming up the steps and gets SO happy to see his buddy. Our cats love them, too, even if they don’t show it with bounding kisses like our dog does.
Emily and Maija are both super sweet, professional, and they really care about your pet. They even caught a bartonella infection in one of our cats that our other vet missed completely.
When you call or when you email, you talk to one of the vets, not a receptionist. You’re always in touch with the people who are actually caring for your animal, so you get the answers you need when you need them.
Plus, they come to you! How awesome is that. No more hassle getting the pets to the vet, no more waiting to be seen, no more nervous, scared pets. Seeing the vet is actually enjoyable now, for me, my dog, and my cats.

The best ever. Warm personal service in your home. The two doctors, Maija and Emily, really care about animals and spend time with you and your pets. These are people you want to invite over as friends as well as skillful professionals. I do not own a car and the fact that they come to your house is a real bonus. It is well worth the small fee they charge for the visit. The other day my cat has minor surgery and he was picked up and brought home by his doctor, Emily Neenan. He thought it was a real treat!
