Located on 23 acres, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum contains the authentically restored and furnished 1750 home and snuff mill where Gilbert Stuart was born. The Museum, set in the woods on a beautiful millpond and stream, has the working Stuart snuff mill, an operating gristmill, fish ladder, and colonial herb garden. View original portraits by Gilbert Stuart and his daughter Jane Stuart in our new state-of-the-art exhibition gallery located in our handicapped accessible Welcome Center. Visitors enjoy our nature trails with scenic overlooks of the pristine Carr Pond and stunning flora and fauna. Artists find inspiration on our beautiful grounds. Who was Gilbert Stuart? Gilbert Stuart, one of America’s best-known portrait artists, painted over 1000 paintings in his lifetime, but is most remembered for his portraits of George Washington. Stuart was born in 1755 above his father’s snuff mill in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, the first snuff mill in the american colonies.
