The mission of Royce Learning Center is to provide comprehensive educational services that will enable children and adults with learning disabilities and literacy needs to reach their maximum potential educationally, emotionally and socially and to heighten public awareness of the lifelong barriers associated with such disabilities.

Royce Learning Center currently operates three programs as part of its approach to serve those with learning disabilities and literacy needs. These three programs are: Chatham Academy, The Adult and Community Education Program and The Tutoring Center. Chatham Academy is a full day school program for children grades 1st-12th.

History

Established in 1971.

Royce Learning Center was founded in 1970 by a group of parents and professionals from the Savannah area. It is the oldest diagnostic learning center in Savannah. Mrs. Harriet Royce, a noted educator of the learning disabled, was the first director of the center. Funding was originally provided by the Junior League of Savannah and Forward Savannah. In 1973, the center began receiving funding from United Way. The purpose of the center was to provide testing, tutoring and education to children with learning disabilities. In 1995, Royce Learning Center merged with Chatham Academy, a school created by concerned citizens to address the need for a full day program of instruction to serve children of average intelligence who were unable to function successfully in a regular classroom. This merger, along with the additions of an Adult Learning Program and a professional tutoring center allowed the center to become the only resource for children and adults with learning disabilities.
