Savannah, the Walking City

ATTRACTIONS: We came to Savannah for two days as my significant other has never visited Savannah before. We visited Riverwalk, Chippewa Square (where Forest Gump sat on the bench in the movie), and Tybee Island. We toured the city via Old Savannah Tours which was a good tour that hit all the highlights and took a ghost tour with See Savannah Walking Tours (see other review). We learned that Savannah is the most haunted city in the nation. Lots of street vendors sitting around making roses with palm leaves… beware! They are everywhere!
PARKING: For visitors there’s a visitor parking pass (purchased at the Visitor’s Center on MLK) where you pay $ 6 a day to park on the street and in the parking garage basically parking anywhere in the city for $ 6. Our hotel tried to charge us for parking $ 15 per day but with the visitor parking pass we parked down the street for $ 6 per day. A great program! Tybee Island parking is $ 2 per hour. We didn’t try to find free parking in Savannah or Tybee but we didn’t try either. We ate at the highly acclaimed Olde Pink House and at the casual Zunzi’s.
TRANSPORTATION: We were able to walk everywhere since we stayed at the 4 Points Sheraton but the city has free transportation including the Riverwalk trolley and ferry boat.
CONCLUSION: Cute city with lots of history but humid, scorching summers. Overall, a fun visit for a laid back couple of days!

There’s no better way to get a sense of the history, architecture, and local flavor of Savannah than to take a walking tour with Bob Markwalter. My husband and I lucked out by booking a same day tour with Bob. Pardon the pun but we walked away after over two hours wanting more. Bob answered all of our questions as if he was hearing them for the first time and had great suggestions for which historical houses to tour as well as restaurants off the beaten path. Bob offers themed, specialty, private, and extended tours both on foot and by motorcoach.
