I recently purchased a downhill bike The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly no high-​pressure sales and a large selection of bikes to choose from after I purchased the bike I realized I was a bit overweight for the suspension that came on It I stopped in and spoke with Todd he immediately notify Jacob of the situation Jacob and Steve went out of their way to accommodate me in my opinion what sets the standard for a bike shop or any shop for that matter is the service you get after the sale I Give planes and sons and a+++

Updating my review it has been a horrible experience getting a road bicycle from this place. I don’t ask for much. It has now been just 2 days shy of a month from trying to get the bike that I wanted. They first let me know that the bike was ready a minute before the business closes which doesn’t do me any good because I can’t pick it up should of just waited till they were open so that I could of actually picked it up. Then come to find out that it was the wrong color. But then told me that I would get the original color that I wanted and that by the end of this week it would be ready. Then I get an e-​mail today that my bike is ready so I come in and see that they replaced the black and white bike that was on display with a red and black bike. And when I asked about how did they get my color bike in the shop and built under 24 hours??? They said that they built it. I asked if they did use the display one since the tires were pretty dirty, the white handle bars were dirty from people using it and there was a small bend in the top part of the frame that I notice when I initially tried the bike in the shop. I asked to get a discount since it seemed pretty curious to have it in 24 hours, and also they said that it «just so happened that someone else had a white and black bike and wanted a red and black». So is it that I do have a new bike or someone tried out the bike and wanted the different color the same time I did? No I don’t believe in flukes like that. I don’t ask for much but when I am paying 650 for a nice road bicycle… I will be getting my money back tom. and never stepping foot in this shop again. I wish I could be making this stuff up but this has been my experience maybe yours will be different best of luck.

If you have children and want to make sure that they have the proper size bike as well as quality safety gear you can’t beat Plaines. As someone who has investigated accidents for a living and has seen what can happen with hand me down equipment that is not the proper size and in poor repair I can’t recommend Plaines too highly. We brought in our 5 & 6 year old girls and they were treated with all the care a serious adult biker would expect. They rode several models that were continually adjusted to their comfort. Karl showed infinite patience in meeting their safety needs as well as style and color desires. He made sure they had their helmets adjusted as well as seat height and handle bar positions. For a small premium in price over a big box store you gain peace of mind knowing you did everything possible for your child’s safety and you also get one year of free adjustments and you can actually trade the bike in when your child out grows it. Please skip the Wall Mart special and go find Karl. He has exceptional product knowledge and you will leave without any regrets. I have bought dozens of new cars including high end German models and felt better about Karl’s honesty and customer care than i have had buying them. Take your kids to Plaines and wait for Karl if he is busy, you will leave knowing you got more than your money’s worth and your child is as safe as he or she could possibly be.

I rented skis for my daughters from Plaines. Customer service was terrific. The guy who helped us, Karl, was super helpful and patient with my kids. Never felt rushed. I picked up the skis two days later after they were fitted and you pick them up in the bike service type area; the guys who gave me the skis were really pleasant as well. I had a question about my bike while I was there and the two guys were happy to answer that as well. Karl also offered the kids juice boxes from their fridge free of charge. Excellent service and the equipment has been good too. Oh, and all throughout the process, the staff assured me that if there was any trouble during the season just to come back and they’d take care of it. Thank you Plaines; good company!

Got some Ski boots and the staff was friendly and patient. I wasn’t a big spender but they helped me feel comfortable with what I was purchasing and made sure I was ready. As a beginner it made me more confident and their selection of ski’s makes me excited to get better so I can upgrade. The camo Élan. ski’s will be mine… oh yes, they will be mine.

I stepped in just looking to find an adapter for my bike pump, and ended up leaving with that, plus a new snowboard jacket and snowboard pants. I worked with Matt, he was great. They had some amazing deals going on and he pointed me in the right direction. Even if I didn’t buy anything that day, I would’ve walked out of there feeling that I was given great customer service.

Pretty much the worst service you could buy for $ 160 bike «tune up». The cheapest wires, no adjustments made to the shifters and derailleurs, when I went back to say, «hey, my bike doesn’t shift» I was told that my wires needed to be tightened. Which is true, but even after it was re tightened, while trying to charge me, it never shifted properly. I was told I needed all new shifters after I brought it in again. Why wasn’t this said to me before? What was I charged for?
When I brought it to a proper mechanic who knew what he was doing, he told me I needed new wires, again after a month, new middle front sprocket cause it was trashed, and he broke down, cleaned and adjusted my shifters. My bike hasn’t functioned this well since it was new.

Went in there looking to buy two new bikes, after much research into what we wanted. The salesperson that day was great: Ian. Very relaxed, able to answer questions, juggle multiple tasks. We left, came back to find out that one of the bikes we had wanted, was sold, that we expected, what we did not expect was to be told that that bike was no longer available. I wish we had been told that at our first visit. The second visit was horrible, it was on a Sunday. Busy place and poorly staffed. Staff there did not juggle well, could not multitask. I was told that they would call me first thing on Monday and see about locating another bike, to replace the one which had been sold. I was told that they would call me first thing ion Monday morning. I called the shop on Monday at 12 when I did not hear back. Was told he could not find anything, so sorry. I asked if he had called his other shops, he said no. Did I really have to prompt him to figure that out?! He then said he would check and call me back, then he said here’s the number, you call and see. I then got a call from him, about one hour later, saying that another sister store has it and here is their number, make sure you go and see them. I did not. I had already located the bike, which they said none had. I had to drive an hour, but it was so worth it to go another shop and be treated well and see how smooth a real bike shop functions. I would not recommend Plaines.

Had a horrible experience with David the general manager of all people. it’s been practically a month since I went to this shop to inquire about a fork recall on my Specialized bicycle. David told me he was too busy to deal with it. I had to talk him into taking photos and taking more my information about the bike so he could talk to his Specialized reps and told me he would be in touch.
Over a month I called 3 times and twice he told me that all his reps were in meetings, the third time he wasn’t around to take my call. In the meantime I contacted Specialized directly and they told me that none of their reps have been in meetings. This kid running the place is either lazy or just full of bullshit.
I went to Plaine’s shop because I didn’t like the other Specialized dealer in the area.
It quickly became apparent to me that the safety of bicycle riders is not as important as making money. The kid running this shop is ridiculous! Horrible customer relations. Get it together.

I hate to say it, but Plaine’s has changed… for the worst. The departure of their previous manager and some other staffing/​management changes have a lot to do with it. Without going into a very long story, I had bought one of my new race bikes from them a few months ago: a Specialized Venge. It worked great, but when I brought it in for a routine tune-​up, I got it back with a problem. Subsequent attempts to get that problem resolved were not successful, and it was evident that the techs at Plaine’s did not bother to actually verify it was fixed before giving the bike back to me. No test ride, they just gave it back and claimed it was fixed when it obviously was not. After I eventually decided to take the bike to someone else to get it fixed, that tech identified that Plaine’s never did what they said they did. This person also fixed the problem the first time I took it to him.
If there is one thing that I cannot stand, it’s when someone tries to bullshit me. Don’t tell me you did something that you didn’t really do. Chances are, I’ll eventually find out, and that revelation will cost you not only my business, but the business from everyone who I will tell about your antics. Furthermore, don’t be lazy: Don’t tell someone that you fixed the problem until you’ve verified that it is indeed fixed. If you tell me the problem is fixed, I take the bike home and immediately find that it’s not, that’s pretty shitty.
There’s another Specialized/​S-​Works dealer in the area with a location much more convenient for me, and I have already had very positive interactions with them. It looks like I’m taking my business to them. Plaine’s no longer has the same vibe to me.

Ambivalent is certainly the word I would use to describe our experience at Plaine’s thus far, on the Bike repair side. Having no knowledge of this «ski» and «snowboard» thing, we leave that aspect of reviewing to others.
So we purchased a bike at a police bike auction that was run (as a volunteer effort, for charity fundraising) by the manager of Plaine’s, and bought a bike that we were told at the time need just new tires and a tune-​up, getting a guesstimate at the time from her and an associate of about $ 100.
We figured we’d honor their commitment to the community and get the tune up and repairs done there. The estimate went up to $ 150 or so when we got there, though, but I decided, OK, sure, this is still within the boundaries of a marginally good deal if we can get a serious bike.
When it came time to pick up the bike, the bill was over $ 200 with tax. And a part fell off, completely broken, when we were testing it at the shop.
Now they made good on this by replacing the part for free, and they were relatively friendly and professional about the whole thing. And it must be said, these people really, really know their bikes — it is nice to find people who are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their work. And we have a usable bike in the end.
But…the rear brake still doesn’t work well. And they had failed to tighten the quick release on the rear wheel, so when I was riding it around my driveway the wheel started coming off, and it didn’t quite true up right. I am not entirely sure they tightened the spokes all the way around.
So, and this may be an emotional reaction, I feel like we got suckered in the whole transaction. I don’t believe this was malicious or car-​repair-​shop dishonest. It was just a bit unthoughtful, or perhaps overly optimistic of them in their estimates, and the fact that we ended up having five or six different people from end to end meant in the end they didn’t honor, IMHO, the original spirit of their estimates to repair the bike. Maybe this place is just too big to really do truly personal service, where the person doing the estimate and the tech doing the repair ought to be the same person. I appreciate the fact it’s hard to do a quick assessment on repairs, but they were off by a factor of 100%, which is why I feel a bit put upon. And then they didn’t do the quality assurance on the original repairs thoroughly, and then the second time they clearly didn’t really check the thing from stem to stern that well.
So: ambivalent. Nice people who know their stuff, but it was a very bad transaction for us in the end. I don’t even know how to extrapolate that to other people, but I will tell you we talked about this and decided to shop around for another bike repair place so we walk in next time feeling better about the place. Does that mean you shouldn’t go to Plaine’s? This was probably an outlier or an exception but I am not going to be the repeat customer who will let you know. Ordinarily we give two stars to places we’re not going back to, so consider it a sign of possible karmic redemption I stuck the third star here.

My boyfriend and I brought our snowboards in after the season to have them tuned-​up. We had a Groupon from some friends so, this didn’t cost us anything. However, I’m pretty sure they didn’t do anything to our boards. The package included a hot wax and the boards were still just as scratched up as when we brought them in.
Luckily, we didn’t have to pay for this, even though I wouldn’t have had they brought out the boards in this condition in exchange for my money.
I would definitely never use this shop for any service in the future.

My son and I stopped in Plaine’s with some mechanical problems during a cross-​country bike tour. We had been in many bike shops over those 3k miles, all for the same recurring issue. Plaine’s mechanic, Jason, was the first one to thoroughly check out the problem and fix it so that it wouldn’t happen again,
While we waited, we checked out the bikes for sale. We’d been in a LOT of bike shops by then and to kill time, my 12 year old son and I played this game where he’d quiz me on how much I thought they were asking for various bikes… And at Paine’s i guessed too high *every* time. Their prices were great.
The mechanical work was perfect and the prices were great, but the reason I wanted to write this review is the staff… They are awesome! Especially with my boy. The mechanic, the manager, sales staff were all super cool, totally humble and helpful. We live in Seattle so I doubt if I’ll ever be back, but if I lived in NY I know where I’d get my bike stuff.

Stopped in to purchase a bike after almost 30 years of sedentary activities — the young man who worked with me was outstanding, extremely knowledgeable. I found the right bike for me, and found all the right accessories to go with it. I ended up leaving without anything because they did not honor American Express (Gift Card). A place as large as Plaine’s with multiple locations surprised me that they did not accept the card.
Will I go back — most definitely — I just won’t use Amex.

Plaine and Son carries Specialized and Trek bikes, and they have a very sizable selection of those makes. The floor room is a lot larger than most cycling stores, and the only one I’ve ever seen bigger would be the chain Performance Cycles. Because of this, the odds of them having the bike you want in your size, ready to ride off the showroom floor is rather high.
When you go and buy a new bike, the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. I had an excellent experience purchasing my Specialized road bike, and they did a great job of fitting me. The only downside I had was them pushing accessories on me at the time of purchase. I’m not naïve in this capacity – I know they’re just trying to make a buck and stay in business – but I’ve been biking for years so I have most of the things I needed right then. It’s easy enough to say «no», and I guess it gave me something to do while they added the computer to the bike, and made some minor adjustments.
As for accessories, they mostly only sell the Specialized brand. It is common for bike stores to be brand specific, but I would have like to see more options. In no way are Specialized products bad, it’s just that they’re not a good value; other brands offer similar quality for a better price.
Speaking of price, Plaine and Son offer bikes and accessories at (or close to) MSRP. It’s just that the products they sell are more upper tier, thus pricier.

I bought a bike (Trek 7300) from Plaine’s last weekend. It’s the first bike that I’ve owned since my Huffy days in the early 90s and although I had done some research beforehand the great staff helped me figure out what bike best fit my needs. They let you test ride bikes in their large showroom or outdoors if you want more space and don’t rush you into making a decision. They were also very helpful when it came to picking out accessories and gave me a free upgrade on an under-​the-​seat bag when the one I purchased didn’t fit the bike correctly.
Plaine’s has a great selection of bikes ranging from kid’s bikes and cruisers to top-​of-​the-​line racing bikes and their prices are reasonable compared to what I’ve seen online. They offer a price-​match guarantee and one year of free tune-​ups on any bike purchase.
The only downside to my experience was that after purchasing my bike, the owner told me that they would install my accessories and adjust the bike in ten minutes, and instead it took an hour. Oh well, that gave my dad and I enough time to check out Five Guys Burgers & Fries — but that’s another review!
