We are a short drive from the Avenue of the Giants, the Friendly City of Fortuna and the Victorian Village of Ferndale. We have a Pub inside the inn with a full bar and restaurant, open 5 days a week for lunch and dinner (Closed Sunday & Monday). It is a perfect venue for events of all kinds including weddings, class reunions, birthday parties, baby showers, retreats and the list goes on. History

Established in 1888.

Scotia was founded in 1869. At that time it was called Forestville, and consisted of a small logging operation. In 1883, the land was chosen as the site for the mill and construction on both the mills and houses began. The first inn at this location was constructed in 1888. This inn served local needs and became a stagecoach stop between the Bay Area and Eureka. This structure burned down in the early 1900’s and was replaced in 1923. The first unit of the new Mowatoc Hotel (later named Scotia Inn) was constructed in 1923. In 1924, a second unit of the hotel was completed, providing 135 rooms for company workers, guests and tourists. The name Mowatoc and the diamond architectural motif on the front of the Hotel relates back to the local Modoc Indians. The name Mowatoc was used until the late 1940’s when it was then changed to Scotia Inn. The Scotia Inn has 22 lovely rooms decorated with antique and modern furniture. It has a gorgeous bridal suite, with its own private hot tub.

Our experience during our Robert Burns Supper was dissatisfying on many counts. Here is what we’d like to pass on to others thinking of the Scotia Inn’s ballroom for an event. Due to the new Mexican restaurant, Miquels, that is now established, the venue is not secure. If you have to bring things ahead of time, please request a locked room. Patrons use the ballroom as a way to and from the restaurant. The sliding door between the ballroom and restaurant must be open, not just unlocked, during all business hours. The restaurant serves from 11 am. to 9 pm. The organizer, or wedding planner, should be vigilant in checking the table settings. At this time, the staff seems untrained to serve a large, plated party. Go with a buffet. During our event, the staff plated meals without Chef supervision, and over portioned. One table, for sure, did not get the veggies or mashed potato, and were told they had run out and hoped they would be okay with what they were given. Staff did not serve table by table, but entrée by entrée. Some at the same table waited a considerable time before getting their meal. Please bring your own PA/​Mic. system. The one they offer is really unavailable. Check in with the restaurant ahead of time if know you will have guests that use wheelchairs and walkers. They will have to come through that way for their safety.

Loved it. Since we were taking a trip to see the Redwoods, we wanted to stay at a hotel that was different than the mainstream popular hotels because we wanted this trip to be memorable. We didnt want to go back to our hotel room and forget that we were in Redwood Country. Scotia Inn was great, and their service was 2nd to none. Thank you for a great time.

Greatly enjoyed staying here for a 1 night visit while I was roadtripping around Northern CA. The Scotia Inn is perfectly charming, definitely not upscale but filled with beautiful antiques and the joy of life in a more simple time. The staff was lovely and the gentlemen who checked me in helped me find the right hiking trail for next day’s adventure. The room itself was basic and a bit worn but impeccably clean with beautiful touches including lace country curtains and antiques. The bathroom had a claw foot tub and nice air flow.
There is a small grocery across the street to stock up on essentials for hiking, roadtripping and the town is just lovely and filled with a sense of history. I will definitely look forward to returning on my next roadtrip.

We stayed in room 202 and had the worst sleep in that bed. The beds foot area was higher than the rest of the bed and the springs must have been broken. It creaked and made our backs creak. We got up and left at 5 am bc neither one of us slept. Cancelled the following night.

Excellent place if you can ignore the ghosts that bother you through the night. :/​It was clean — really quite — except for the ghost movements — also out of the 50 rooms or so maybe 5 were occupied. hotel is over 100 years old. Friendly staff. Clean soft towels. Cannot control room temperature. The staff will tell you all the ghost stories. I can’t do that again… Need my rest.

Love this place. The Inn is truly lovely and the staff are delightful. We stayed in Room 112, which has a double/​queen and a single bed. Rooms are super-​clean, little fridge in our room, lovely windows. The lobby is amazing and all the wood is … well, amazing. Continental breakfast and coffee in the morning, sleep town. Great. I love it.

Four stars given as this place is very cool. It does need some updating. The wallpaper is cracking, head board was dirty, antique furniture needed a good polishing. Overall just some TLC and this place could be better. Also the breakfast area felt extremely unsafe, we have kids and the railing was so low someone with limited mobility could easily trip and fall over the edge. Breakfast was cold cereals, yogurts, breads and oatmeal, very limited and could have been much better.

Awsome food, awsome service. So glad gallagher’s decided to move into the pub. I will definitely be back. Love gallagher’s in eureka but it’s to far to drive when taking advantage of the beer on tap. I don’t know about the hotel rooms but the lobby is beautiful as always and the restrooms are clean. Thanks friendly staff for a nice evening.

This will be hard to rate for several reasons. We were there for a family wedding, so you would not want to insult any issue having to do with the bride’s choices.
It was reportedly haunted, so that made it a great place to be, despite the fact no one would let us in the haunted areas. History lurks behind every intriguing corner and doorway. But, what you see is what you get. There are no extra amenities in the rooms, period, including an extreme shortage of electrical plugs that weren’t above the baseboard heater or the bathroom sink, neither location being a good spot for charging equipment. On the picky side, no CC, few channels, fair to poor bed, absolute minimum breakfast foods, tepid hot water for tea, although the minstrel’s balcony above the lobby was a sweet place to eat and mingle with other guests. I do not know what the standard price would be, but I fear it would be dear.
The rooms, and the hotel, are beautiful. You could not ask for a nicer, lovelier setting in the redwoods. A full bar in the basement, a huge ballroom for the dinner, each room has lovely antiques and personal touches, ours was quite large and roomy. For a lovely stop in the redwoods, (bring your own hair dryer and tea pot) this is a grand place. Ah, and just a general store across the street, but with a large selection of quick foods.

Clean rooms, well-​furnished. on the basic side, but, what more do you need?
Great breakfast! I don’t know what people are complaining about. Big selection, and everything in good condition (fresh, good variety, etc.). There’s a market and gas station right across the street, and a post office (etc.) within easy walking distance down the road. So those are convenient.
Definitely would recommend!

Charming mix of past and present. I stayed in a simply furnished comfortable room just steps off of the lobby. The bed was comfortable, the furnishings charming, and everything was clean. The water in the shower was tepid but had plenty of pressure.
I enjoyed a good dinner of fish (halibut) and chips in the pub after checking in.
After a good night’s sleep I was on the road again. Room rate included a simple continental breakfast.

We arrived at the Scotia Inn on a dark moonless night but soon felt welcomed by the warm cheery lights on the front porch. That’s what staying at the Scotia Inn feels like – home! They leave the lights on for you and treat you like family! The staff is pleasant and friendly. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. The inn was built in the 1800s, so period furniture abounds. If you’re looking for a great quiet place to get away and experience what life in the redwoods was life in bygone days, check out the Scotia Inn!

Well this was a fun place to stay.
Spent 4th of July here. The town is pretty sleepy, but there is some interesting history here. You can walk the town and learn about the lumber company and get an idea of what life was like during the company’s hay-​day.
The Inn itself is big, charming and has great rooms. The bar /​restaurant was closed for the holiday, which was a bit of a disappointment as I had wanted to check it out. We ended up going a few miles up the road to Fontana and ate/​drank at Elk River Brewery, which was great.
Great value for the money — keep your dollars local and support this historic inn.

It was a great, last-​minute find late at night. The staff was friendly, the room clean, and the building creepily awesome! There was plenty of parking available and a little market with a deli across the street to pack a lunch for our visit to the redwoods.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. what a find. we were stuck in fortuna, and couldn’t get a room. everything booked, so we called ahead, and this place even allows DOGS. upon arrival? I was so excited I could hardly see straight.
this is such a treasure. seriously. just the most gorgeous old style «shining» type hotel. OLD SCHOOL. no crazy ammenities, but just historic, and beautiful. I got chills walking around at night. so many rooms, and so many different places to explore.
the restaurant was almost about to close, so I ordered some food, and took it to our room. very very tasty, coconut shrimp, onion rings, thai peanut chicken, and veal cordon bleu. very lovely.
I couldn’t wait to venture out. we walked the entire building, looking at old photos, and historic moments. Its crazy that this entire town is owned by a bank, on one parcel, but its true.
stella is a fabulous front desk concierge! we had a lovely conversation, and the breakfast scones? over the top.
I was only saddened by the realization that a lumber baron chopped down some super large trees, for his resale. seeing photo’s of 20 men standing on a stump? was sad. but alas, thats the past. we in the future need to relish these trees, and our historic pasts, and learn from them.
today I learned that this place stands out… among all the other spots on a four week vacation. I highly recommend. simply lovely.

Well, not really. But if you want to see what an old Pacific Lumber town looked like, Scotia is one place to be and the Scotia Inn is a nice place to stay. I’ve been to the pub/​restaurant which was a welcome refreshment stop along the Avenue of the Giants.
The first inn at this location was constructed in 1888 and became a stagecoach stop between the Bay Area and Eureka. That structure burned down in the early 1900’s and was replaced in 1923. The first unit of the new Mowatoc Hotel (later named Scotia Inn) was constructed that same year. As part of the demise of Pacific Lumber, the Inn has changed hands a few times since. In Scotia Inn itself has 22 rooms that are decorated with antique and modern furniture over. There’s also a closed 3rd Floor waiting for a future business opportunity.

Review for the pub/​restaurant.
We came in and sat ourselves and the server came by promptly. We ordered burgers with a side salad, sweet potato fries, and two bloody marys.
The burgers and the sweet potato fries were great! The only thing I have to say about the burger is that for some reason, my medium well burger was cooked less than my mom’s medium burger. Mine was more medium-​rare. But it was still good, and honestly I’d rather have burgers that were a tiny bit undercooked rather than cooked to leathery tarnation.
The sweet potato fries were excellent! Moist and sweet potatoey on the inside, crispy on the outside, and not too greasy.
The side salad was a downer though. The lettuce wasn’t well rinsed, so it was very gritty. We had to stop eating it. But I hope that since we passed along the word asking the servers to tell the kitchen, that this shouldn’t be a problem in the future.
The drinks were okay. We ordered our bloody marys extra spicy, but they weren’t really spicy. They still packed a punch though.
Overall the service was prompt/​friendly/​attentive, the food was pretty good, and the drinks were decent. Probably the nicest restaurant in the Rio Dell/​Scotia area, so I’d recommend you stop by on your way up 101. Just note that they close randomly sometimes (I think for most of January? The off season?), so it’d be best to call beforehand and see if they’re actually open.
