Dan did a fantastic job repairing a bookcase damaged in our recent move.
One leg of the bookcase, which was part of the frame, had broken off so that the whole thing was coming apart at the seams. It was hard to imagine it ever being able to support the weight of 5 shelves full of books again. Since it was one of a set of three glass-​front book shelves, I was worried I would have to replace all three book cases.
I told him he could do whatever he needed to do to get it standing again, and assumed I would have a visible metal plate or something to hold it together. However, Dan fit the wood back together and even refinished it so it’s practically invisible. He added a metal angle brace on the inside of the frame that’s in an invisible location. You can’t tell it was ever broken, and it really is better than new.
I had a hard time finding someone to make a house call for this job, because I can’t fit the bookcase in my car, and the other people I talked to wanted me to rent a van to take it to their shop and pick it up. Dan has a busy schedule, but made an appointment to come out and do the repair right in the living room. He’s a perfectionist, an artist, and a professional. I will use his services again, and recommend him to everybody I know.

This took longer than promised but OMG, worth the wait. Superb workmanship. I would definitely recommend Dan and his crew.
My designer coffee table had «chews» at every corner, and on the base in places. So not easy plus it had a leather insert on the top.
Anyhow, it is gorgeous now.

Dan was awesome! I purchased a beautiful dining table and hutch from a high end outlet, but the table had a huge gouge out of the top. I remember Dan did a repair for me in the past, so he was the first person I called for help. Let me just say he is truly an artist. When my husband got home that night, he couldn’t even find where the repair had been made.

Quality and responsiveness: the two most important qualities when you are trusting heirlooms to a furniture restorer. I can’t speak highly enough for the quality of Dan’s work. As to «responsiveness»: he makes house calls!

We had a damaged bedside table repaired at BTN, and the results were perfect! The repaired corner and stain was exactly how it should have been from the factory, great job and will use again!

Dan helped us out big time last year when our Scandinavian plateau bed broke in the middle: he literally made it Better Than New in the shortest time possible! Encouraged by his excellent credentials and workmanship we brought Dan an antique carved chest, a family heirloom, where he proved his tremendous knowledge about wood restoration and did a wonderful job. We had one more teak end table with a huge water stain that Dan and his team worked on successfully and they showed us that they truly understand how to restore wood furniture correctly — we are very happy and grateful customers!

My parents home burned down in November and they lost everything, with the exception of a couple antiques/​family heirlooms. We brought our rocking chair from 1901 to Dan at Better Than New, and they exceeded our expectations. Not only did they finish the chair early, they finished it on Christmas Eve so we could give it back to my folks on Christmas day. Better Than New made our Christmas this year after the worst year to date for my family. A 5 star rating doesn’t do this type of service justice.

My grandmother’s desk was badly damaged in our move and, to make it worse, the movers lost one of the mahogany legs! Dan did a great job building a new leg and repairing the desk. It looks as good as new.

We had our grandparents 1950’s French colonial furniture re-​finished at Better than New and it turned out wonderful. They were able to correct scratches, and two legs which for some reason had previously been partially sawed off. The furniture looks awesome.

They responded promptly and after providing some photos of our damaged piece, Dan carefully outlined what he could do with a range of outcomes to properly set expectations. He provided a price and scheduled a visit which he arrived at as promised. The work was completed and the result was far better than what we hoped for. We took a wooden toy for repair, which was done beautifully, quickly and reasonably. The repaired toy is truly better than new. Love the work done here.

Dan did a wonderful job repairing the damage to our cabinet doors, built-​in hutch and dining room table caused by MaidPro’s cleaning people. You can’t even tell where the damaged areas were now. He is very professional and easy to work with and responded promptly when I contacted him about doing the repairs. I will recommend him to everyone who needs repair work and will use him again.

We had a dining table and bookcase refinished by Dan and they look much better than they ever did. The table is from copenhagen and was a natural color that we had refinished in white. It’s now absolutely stunning and matches the rest of our décor. The bookcase was honey oak and didnt look right in our house. Dan refinished it in black and I can’t get over how amazing a job he did. We were seriously considering just trashing it, but Dan and team have made us very happy that we didnt.

I’ve had Dan and Chris from ‘Better Than New’ come out to my home for years. I’d never trust or spend the money on any other company to fix my furniture pieces. Their knowledge of the specific craft of furniture restoration is unparalleled. The company’s respect for your home, their attention to detail and their experience and expertise on each piece of your furniture and it’s respective era is profound. Any piece of furniture, they’ve touched numerous others, before your’s no matter how unique you think your piece or situation is.
They’ve come out to fix a crack at the top of a brand new entertainment center, where my usual artist’s eye couldn’t detect the area after they were finished.
They reattached a completely broken off pagoda edge piece of an extremely old and delegate Asian style desk back to it’s original state down to the minute crack pattern edge. The blending technique was exquisite and my large maine coon cat rests on top of the previously broken off pagoda piece daily and it’s never budged an inch sense.
If you want to hire a company for their passion for quality work and to get the «like it it never even happened» factor when it comes to restoring a piece, these are your guys.

The guys over at Better Than New are true honest professionals. They have high standards for furniture restoration and it showed through in the work they did. If you want your furniture fixed right use these guys! By the way the owners actually do most of the work which is quite a rarity these days.

I found this adorable vintage Eames plywood chair at one of the antique shops on 7^th Ave. I was super excited to find such a great piece at a really reasonable price. But of course, the price was the price for a reason! The back of the chair had several deep set chips all along the base of the seat back.
I decided to buy it anyway in hopes that I’d be able to have it repaired (I could NOT pass up that price!). I contacted Better Than New and talked to Dan. He asked me to send him photos of the chair. He told me it would be pretty easy to fix, and that once I dropped it off it wouldn’t take long to repair it.
I brought the chair in on Monday and it was done the same day! Dan sent me photos of the finished product and I was AMAZED. I don’t know what magic they practice over there but it looks fantastic.
The end result is beyond what I could have expected. I figured it would look pretty good. But it looks like there were never any flaws or issues with the chair to begin with! Dan and his team are true artists.

Very rarely do we find individuals who are this passionate about their craft!
With parents and grandparents, we always want to make sure that they are taken care of by the referrals that we suggest to them– otherwise, the whole family hears about it. When my husband’s grandmother asked for assistance to find a woodworker to repair her chair, I immediately hopped onto Unilocal and I’m so glad we did!
Apparently, the sweet southern belle called Dan 3 times before making an appointment, and he could not have been nicer and informative! Once we arrived, the customer service was unparallelled! Dan informed her of exactly how he would repair the chair, showed her another chair that he had just repaired, and even gave her a quick tour of the other pieces that he was working on. She was so impressed by his knowledge and charisma. She knew she was in good hands. Dan set her expectations and let her know that the repair would probably take about two weeks. Much to her surprise, he had a couple hours free that day and was done by the end of the day! She was thrilled!

I’ve experienced woodwork done by Dan at Better Than New twice in the last two years. One project was for a product display for my small and humble (yet powerfully magnificent! YES!!) knitting business in Phoenix, and the other project was a personal dining table in my home.
«But doesn’t her profile say she always eats out?» you may be thinking … Yes that’s true. My dining table is rarely used, but man, does it look swell!
My rad dining table came by way of a Craigslist ad with a virtually impossible-​to-​see photo. Just enough details were in the photo to convey good lines and inspire an in-​person visit. The previous owner clearly loved her dining set and didn’t really want to let it go. She’d been oiling it regularly and had to part ways with it due to lack of space in her apartment. It was a nice design, pleasingly affordable, well-​maintained Danish-​style wood table with an extension leaf and six matching chairs.
The tabletop wasn’t in particularly bad shape, but it was apparent that the extension leaf hadn’t always been in place on the table because the color was slightly incongruous. So off it went to Dan’s shop! Since it’s no collectors item, we only had the top redone. He made sure to do what it took to even out the light and dark spots to make the tabletop match the legs, without, as he put it, diminishing the brightness of the wood and dulling it out. The tabletop came out nice and clean. When advising what approach might best be taken with the piece, he made remarks about the importance of letting the wood’s character show. Dude respects his wood!
The product display piece was something that we needed in order to show off more knitted products at our Bewilderknits booth. The nature of our business takes us to art walks and farmers markets and limits our display to what fits in a 10×10′ tent. We had a couple of folding tables draped with hand-​sewn green tablecloths made out of sturdy upholstery fabric. Our hand-​knitted accessories were laid out on the table for people to touch and try on, but we needed more space. Plus, we needed to inject some textural variety and break it up visually. Kind of like how a terrific picture can be enhanced with a frame. With all the finished products we had, we recognized the need for displaying at varying heights. A long shelf piece felt essential for us to build structure and avoid the potentiality of emanating a «pile-​of-​laundry» vibe.
We’re picky and insist that the character of our products extend out into the displays we use. Our little portable booth is like a store that needs to have a cohesive look and flow. We lean towards an earthy, natural, woodsy aesthetic. Dan has a way of seeing whatever you’re doing with your style and he «just gets it,» so he can help you coordinate. He knew just where to go to find a solution for us, and put together a wood plank shelf with a natural slab of two-​toned wood. There are no rough edges to catch on the yarn in our knitting, but it has the raw-​edge bark look. Instead of being merely a display shelf, the design enhances the tactility of everything in the booth. Plus the legs are removable for simplified transporting. Form plus function!

I have an heirloom mahogany bed that was damaged and partially repaired; it was still a bit wobbly and definitely unsightly. Found «Better Than New» from a google search and am thrilled with their result: no more wobble and looks as good as new (see pics)!
I originally called to make an appointment but was not able to reach anyone, as a lot of their work is done onsite (like mine was). True to the comment on the webpage, I sent Chris an email and received a reply within the day; we scheduled an appointment and he arrived within the window (8−10am). He was polite, knowledgeable, and careful (put blankets down around his work space) as well as talented.
About an hour-​and-​a-​half and $ 118 later, I was (am) a happy customer and Chris was off to his next appointment. Note: I’m not sure if this is true for all jobs, but mine was performed at an hourly rate; Chris notified me of pricing prior to beginning the work (another +).
