Brew Your Own Brew

I inquired about making yeast starters and Tyler hooked me up with a reasonably priced stir plate and flask that work great. The store has everything you need and also the advice. Tyler also recommended the Double Speedball Stout kit and it, combined with my yeast starter was the best batch I’ve made so far. Great location right off the freeway.

This is an awesome store. I stop in the store at least once a week. Sometimes to buy homebrew items or just pass time talking with Tyler or John. I’m always welcome and it’s inviting.
The staff is very knowledgeable. If they don’t have something in stock they’ll call their other store to see if they have it. Or they’ll check with their supplier.
I’m an all grain brewer and the store is set up in such a fashion you can weigh your own grain and mill it too or someone can help you.
Also you can peruse the hops and yeast selection yourself. I like being able to open the coolers and handle what I’m purchasing vs. it being behind a counter and in a fridge that’s off limits like some other local homebrew shops do.
The prices are fair and reasonable. Glad that this store is in North Scottdale, AZ and near my house.

I find myself coming here even when I don’t need anything. The staff here is definitely top notch. They are very knowledgeable about everything they carry and are always quick with advice or ideas. No matter what your brewing needs are I highly suggest dropping to BYOB.
They also turned me onto ASH (Arizona Society of Homebrewers, a great organization for homebrewers in AZ!

I did something dangerous to my wallet yesterday. I went shopping here after drinking a few beers down the street at O.H.S.O.
Asked the guy if he had what I needed to build a «keezer». He knew exactly what I was talking about, showed me a few routes I could take and then rang us up for about $ 280. If you price shop online you can get it cheaper, but most parts weren’t enough to break anyone’s heart. A few bucks more and you’ll keep the money in local businesses rather than software geeks who have enough of it by now.
They need to compare a few prices because one item we found was way overpriced. So, I suggest doing your research before coming in… and don’t do what I did either.
Good thing is they will sell you a used co2 tank for $ 70 that comes full. Then they’ll do $ 20 exchanges. I’m sure it’s cheaper to have it refilled somewhere else, but I’ll probably do the exchange when I come in to buy more stuff.
I’m not into home brewing at this time, just home drafting, so I can’t comment on anything else. However, if you’re just starting, I suggest you start here. The guy knew his stuff and can help you get setup easily.

Love this store. Employees are always friendly and helpful. The best part is they let me put my Grain bill together myself which is really fun. Awesome selection of grain, hops and yeast!

I came in to get my husband beer making supplies for his birthday. I was very excited to not have to travel to What Ale’s Ya, since this place is right by my work. The man working was so nice and patient. Quite a change from what I am used to since I don’t know a lot about brewing beer. They are not pretentious at all. They have beers in a kit, all grain brewing (which is what I was here for), wine making supplies, etc. Bottles, caps, sanitizers… you name it, and they have it.

I’m a beer, particularly craft beer, enthusiast. I read a lot about beer, visit breweries and drink my fair share of beer all in the name of educating myself about beer. Yes… education.
It seemed with all the research I’ve done… Yes, research. It was time to take the next step forward and learn how to brew my own beer.
I had been shopping around online for some starter kits, but wanted to buy locally. Of the homebrew shops in the Phoenix area, I went with Brew Your Own Brew because they seemed to offer the most for the money with their deluxe start up kit.
I walked into BYOB excited and admittedly a little apprehensive. As some of you may know, craft beer snobs can be a bit… prickly. Home brewers, who tend to be craft beer enthusiasts and sometimes beer snobs, can be much the same. Not all of course, you know what I’m saying… but I digress…
So I walk in and the guy behind the counter is on the phone. He looks at me and I smile and give him a gesturally nod. He gives no emotional expression and looks away… Ok…
After maybe a minute or two he’s off the phone and I walk over, smile and say, Hey how’s it going. An attempt to wash away his previous dismissal of me. His response was an expressionless, What can I get you…
Ok… So remember that discussion we had about pricks earlier… err I mean prickly people.
My blood starts boiling a little. Should I have just left at that moment and gone to a different homebrew supply place? Maybe. But I continued with the task at hand. I didn’t want to drive to another place since I was already there, and had planned on getting everything in order to brew the next day.
I told him what I wanted, and he got it all together. He loosened up a little bit, but there was never a point where I felt welcomed… and mind you, I was the ONLY customer there. You’d think he’d be happy to have someone with whom to talk.
It definitely didn’t seem like a place where I could come in the future to discuss homebrewing with the staff. It just felt like he wanted to get everything together and get me out.
I guess what’s chapping my ass the most is that I didn’t just leave when my gut told me that would be best. Instead I spent over $ 200 in a place where I didn’t feel appreciated as a customer, but kinda like a nuisance or just another sale.
But you live and learn, I guess, and I’ve learned that I would more than likely buy homebrew supplies online before supporting this location again.

Nice staff and very accommodating. So many shops try to be «hush hush» about mixing recipes and such. These guys are really helpful and seem to want to help you learn. They also offer a free Clas for newbies. They don’t seem to be judgemental, either.
We are somewhat new to the process, but not to beer. The man who helped us was not snobby about stuff but also seemed open to explaining. He was a salesman, but not pushy. There a fine line. I like knowing what places have to offer, but don’t want people trying to up-​sell all the time.

I was very pleased with my visit today in the store. My wife and I were there just to check out the store and they had more than I was expecting. Their beer kits are a great value and they also have all the separate ingredients to put together your own recipe. I will be coming in again the next time I need to buy something.
