History
Established in 1970.
Back in 1970, if you wanted good fresh fish, you had to drive to Newport Beach or San Pedro. Determined to change this, Seal Beach dentist Walt Babcock and his wife Mona decided to open their own restaurant and fish market. Thus Walt’s Wharf was launched. Walt used his own fishing boat to bring in fresh fish for the first few years, and later utilized his contacts with local fishermen so there would always be fresh fish at the Wharf. Walt’s current endeavor is raising his own herd oa all grass-fed Black Angus Beef in order to continue the tradition of supplying only the highest quality products available.
Meet the Manager
John R.
Manager
John Ryan began his restaurant career in 1977 and has been the General Manager at Walt’s Wharf since 1989. He adopted Walt Babcocks philosophy, «If you want to look good, surround yourself with good people.» Many Walt’s employees have worked through high school and college and their loyalty and enthusiasm is displayed through their work. A talented chef and long term kitchen staff has allowed Walt’s to maintain a high level of excellence. John’s motto, «Be The Best You Can Be!» has inspired the staff to continue to strive to offer our guests more than expected.
In his spare time, John and his family, train and compete in running and triathlon events. John and son Keith completed the Ironman Triathlon event in 2006. John’s wife, Dana and son’s Keith and Kyle completed the Escape From Alcatraz triathlon in 2007 and 2008. In September, John will be competing as a team member raising funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation at Ironman Chattanooga Tennessee.
