Alki Point Lighthouse

This is a Great FREE historical tour. You might get lost going there as it looks like a private residence and it is fenced off. After you find it, it will be well worth it! The tour takes about 30 minutes and you get a history of Seattle and lighthouses in general. Then you get to go into the lighthouse and learn how it was operated and why this location was chosen and why lighthouses still exist. The best part is getting to go to re top and look out at the sound! I think I might try to see all of Washington’s light houses.
So why not 5 stars you ask? The place is a little difficult to find and the tours are only on the weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day from 1 – 4.

The Alki Lighthouse is a landmark that is carefully maintained. They only offer tours on Sundays but they are free. The additional buildings on the grounds still have residents that live there and the guides are adamant that you don’t get on the grass or take pictures of the residence buildings.
The lighthouse is very well maintained and even though you can’t go on the grass you can go on the white gravel surrounding the lighthouse for photos.
This light house is slightly taller than most other Washington lighthouses and has a small tower where the light actually is. That is cool! There are at least two or three other volunteers there to tell you the history of the lighthouse and that is a lot of fun to learn all the back history about the place!

I got lost finding this place the first day. But that was my own fault.
And yes It is open for tours on the weekends from June to August and its done by Volunteers so be aware if you go there and its not open for tours.
Its the Admiral of the Coast Guards house now and he was out when i was looking at the Light House and was very friendly.
I took a few pics then walked further up to the beach and came around the back side and got better pics of the lighthouse on the outside of the fence. And its still in use to this day. Next time I will go on the tour.
And to discredit others, there is a sign stating when its open.

Most complaints are about this joint not being open — but’s it is owned by the Coast Gaurd, and well the Admiral of the area or something actually lives on the premises. I can get that this place is seasonal and weekends only — I sure wouldn’t want a bunch of strangers stomping around my backyard day in and day out.
Being Coast Guard/​military run — the tour process is formal. You check in, get escorted along the property by a member who knows Alki history and tells you all about the startings of this lighthouse. Then you get a boat safety lecture. Then you get to go inside and see example of old timey lanterns used, nautical knots, etc. You can even go up to the top — which is a bit of a dizzy experience mostly because it is like 15 degrees hotter up top than anywhere else in the lighthouse itself. Still — you get some excellent views of the sound.
Oh, and it is free folks. FREE. So totally worth a pit-​stop in my book if you happen to time things right (when they are actually open to the public).

Would have loved to check out the Alki Lighthouse. My husband and I walked from Alki beach on a Saturday in June around noon to check it out. It’s surrounded entirely by a perimeter fence so you can’t even get close enough to take pictures. Sadly, there was a sign out front that the Lighthouse was closed with no explanation. Since it’s only open a few days of the year, it would be nice they were actually open on those specific days. Boo.

Open to the public on weekends

Closed off to public and waste of tax payer dollars.
