Located in Seattle, Washington Alpha Martial Arts is dedicated to helping people improve their lives through martial arts. We are a Black Belt School developing students that are not only physically fit and can defend themselves, but who are, most importantly, outstanding members of the community. We achieve this by teaching life skills through blocking, punching and kicking.

Through our integrated Powerful Words character development program students actively learn and develop valuable life and social skills including confidence, self esteem, focus, self discipline, courtesy, respect, self control and perseverance in every class. Our outstanding martial arts program emphasizes health, life-long fitness and teaches incredibly effective self defense skills in a friendly, safe, positive environment.

Mr. Herrman began training in Karate as a student at Syracuse University in 1991 and has been teaching since 1994. He relocated to Seattle in 2001 and is currently ranked as a 4^th degree Black Belt in Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate under Mr. Brian MacDonald and is a 2^nd Grade Black Belt in Doce Pares Eskrima under Mr. Jason Silverman. He is a member of the National Association of Professional Martial Artists, the Martial Arts Teachers Association and is a 4x Black Belt Schools International Certified Instructor (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009). He is also a graduate of ProMac (Professional Martial Arts College) under Mr. Dave Kovar (2009) and a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. Mr. Herrman is the Master Instructor at AMA Bryant.

I am not athletic and I haven’t worked out in years. However, the environment here is super supportive and yet they push you. It was great, I always left sweaty, happy and accomplished. I highly recommend it for those who want to get in shape and learn Muay Thai/Kickboxing.

Bought the groupon $ 30 for 4 kickboxing classes and comes with gloves! Just got home from my first class and I feel amazing right now! I feel so energized and I feel like I can work out more. It’s the perfect amount of exercise where you feel the adrenaline and sweat but you don’t feel exhausted.
First ten minutes is warm-up and I already started feeling tired. They gave great attention to beginners. The instructor would lead the class and beginners stayed to one side and learned basic punches and kicks in a small group. The last part of class was fun, we did a rotations thing. Row 1 did freestyle with the punching bag, 2 did plank, 3 did squats, and 4 did jumping jacks, and we rotated every minute. It was a lot of cardio and the music kept you pumped up!
The only downside is that the location is behind uvillage so it’s not really convenient for me unless I drive.
Update: Now that I finished my first four classes, I have confirmed I really like kickboxing. Unfortunately, it is really expensive so I don’t think I can continue :’(But the classes always start out with warm-up, then routines that the instructor gives you, then end with some higher intensity cardio workouts with partners.

We started at AMA with our eldest kid about three years ago. It was a vastly better experience than his previous karate dojo, and now his brother and two cousins are also attending. The staff is great, from the top guy (Chris Herrman) to the young black belt volunteers who help with events. The school provides a solid mix of mental and physical discipline with plenty of opportunities for enjoyment and advancement. There are many martial arts schools closer to our home but we are way to happy to switch!

recently purchased a groupon for kickboxxing class and decided to try this place out.
The staff is pretty nice and Kristin is a great teacher.
Would been better if they have limitation on class size. My first class was awesome because there were only three people. Although I was kinda scared with the thought «is this place pretty bad therefore no one goes here?», the core of my first class was great. Me and the other two girls had a lot of personal comments from Kristin. We were each hitting our own stand up puncher (not sure what’s the actual name for that thingy, lol)
My second class was a lot different, there were so many people, some are professional, with muay thai practices, and some are just like me, going there for kickboxing fitness. during warm up, some students have to stand to the edge of the mat, where we enter. Therefore space were limited for each student for their movement.
Since they offer online signup for each class, I think it would be better if they have seat limitation, such as only 20 – 25 student max could sign up for the class.

Kickboxing is awesome and Belle’s classes are fun. Got a great deal for 10 classes on Groupon. So far I’m enjoying the classes. Lots of different moves and variety means you’re never going to get bored and stay challenged. I get a good sweat going and feel mentally stimulated. Since I’m new, it’s hard to remember the order of moves when she tells us what combination punches/kicks to do, but I like that she goes around the room and helps correct anything I’m not doing quite right. My favorite parts of the class is throwing lots of punches and kicks in a row! But the other side that involves memorizing moves and the order of moves can be especially challenging when I’m tired, but I feel stretching your mind and keeping it active along with your body is a good thing. I think everyone should give this a shot, it’s a very well-rounded workout in just an hour. She also has us team up with a partner for a portion, which adds some excitement, especially since if you didn’t bring a friend you’ll be throwing punches at a complete stranger (while they’re wearing mitts, of course). Get the Groupon if you can!

Love this place! I originally signed up via ILoveKickboxing’s Groupon. After my 3^rd or 4^th class I took the plunge and bought a year membership for unlimited classes. I go to about 4 – 5 classes a week here.
There are 3 – 4 different instructors teaching Kickboxing. I love that as they each bring something different to the table each workout so you never feel bored or like what you are doing is getting old. Also everyone is SUPER friendly and encouraging. Do not feel like because you have never done anything like this before or did not come with a friend you will feel left out or out of place. Everyone encourages everyone to try their best and push your limits, some of the most supportive people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
I’ve already lost a half inch off each thigh in 2 weeks of going 4 – 5 times a week. I have been making a conscious effort also to eat healthy but nothing dramatic.
Also nice that the Uvillage is right around the corner so you can grab a jamba juice or evolution fresh drink after a tough workout.
The only bummer would be unless you love it enough to commit in the long term buying individual classes can get really pricey. I plan to work my way up to Muay Thai so its worth it for me to buy a membership. Definitely buy the 10-class groupon if you can… its a STEAL!

Alpha Marital Arts is a great martial arts studio by University Village.
Mr Herman is a fearless leader. He runs a tight ship. Besides just learning
martial arts, kids get a good dose of what it takes to build character.
Instructors talk about what ‘integrity’, ‘discipline’, ‘respect’ etc. means and they
exemplify these qualities in their work.

My 9 year old daughter decided she wanted to learn Karate and we researched and hunted and found the best place in Seattle in Alpha Martial Arts. The instructors are patient and talented. She is learning well and is also getting the level head and character instruction that AMA teaches their students. The cost is affordable and clear so you don’t feel like your getting in over your head. We love AMA and would highly recommend them to kids and adults looking for great people and the highest quality instruction.

I just completed a wonderful 2 month kettlebell class with Dan Nelson at Alpha Martial Arts. The gym is a nice facility, with a friendly atmosphere, and the class was first rate. Dan is incredibly knowledgeable about exercise physiology, and led a fast-paced class while giving attention to the needs of each participant. I learned more in this class than I have in the last 3 years of using kettlebells, and I pushed myself harder than I have in a long time. I can’t recommend this class highly enough!

From the moment you walk in the door you know that AMA offers a shared respect for everyone, a positive environment for learning, and healthy approach to personal fitness.
About six months ago, I started taking kickboxing classes once a week and now also attend Muay Thai (yes there is a difference) and Krav Maga four or five classes a week.
All the instructors are knowledgeable and will motivate you to achieve your personal best, safely.

I can’t recommend Alpha Martial Arts highly enough. My 11 year old son got his black belt there and learned a whole bunch of valuable life lessons in the process. He is maturing into a fine young man, thanks in large part to AMA. Their monthly exploration of «powerful words» (like citizenship, integrity…) really helps put the learning of the technical side of kenpo into context for malleable young minds.
I got as far as green belt before we relocated to California. I really miss Alpha Martial Arts, they will be a very hard act to follow.
Owner Mr Hermann is a fantastic teacher and a perfect role model for my son, as are all of the instructors. Shout-outs for instructors Mr Chris, Mr Nick and Ms Alison. Great teachers all.
They recently expanded the premises to add second classroom. They also do Muay Thai kickboxing (the instructor is a former world champion!), Brazilian jiu jitsu and krav maya.
Truly the best decision I ever made. I will miss all my AMA friends. What a great community.

*This review is solely for the Muay Thai Kickboxing class.
I’ve been here about three times now– enough times to make an adequate judgement about a place– and I love it! While I’ve never been to a Martial Arts center or taken any classes like this before, I was pleasantly surprised about how great of a work out I got, while having fun. I left feeling refreshed and «kick-ass» but also exhausted.
This place is clean, the instructors are friendly and helpful (they actually walk around the whole room and corrects/encourages everyone), and the kickboxing moves are not that difficult for me being that I don’t normally kick and punch things.
I started going because of the Groupon and a lot of people got the same idea, so the class sizes are significantly larger than they were on my first day. I go various times throughout the week and they are always pretty full. It sucks because then we don’t get to kick the giant training bags, but you do get to partner up and practice kicking pads. It’s okay as soon as you get through the weird «oh hi, you’re a complete stranger» stage.
So overall, I will definitely keep coming back even after my Groupon ends.

We have had our five year old son enrolled at Alpha Martial Arts in their Little Dragons program for six months. The instructors are extremely good with this age group. They are positive, fun and encouraging while having a firm presence with the kids. My son has learned lots of karate skills as well as practice in group behavior and following directions in general. There is also a short discussion in every class and a word of the month such as ‘courage’ or ‘self-reliance’ that is discussed in an age-appropriate way with an optional homework assignment to help students transfer the learning to their home lives. The cost was a little daunting, but it has really been worth the investment and a great experience for our little guy.

Alpha Martial Arts is a great place for kids to learn martial arts in a friendly, encouraging environment. They’re good at what they do, both in karate and as teachers, and have a good combination of serious and supportive. Our son and daughter are learning karate there, ages 13 and 10, and they both like it a lot. The normal progression is move ahead one belt level every three months (eg yellow, then advanced-yellow, then orange, then advanced-orange…) which gives the kids a nice sense of accomplishment and progression.

The Muay Thai kickboxing class here is a genuine martial arts class, not the «kickboxing cardio!» classes (yes, with exclamation point) that are usually promoted at more general fitness gyms. Which isn’t to say that those classes are bad; anything that gets people moving is good in my book.
I’m also not saying that you won’t get a killer cardio workout here — because you definitely, definitely will. Just be warned that you will be expected to punch things — hard. And kick them. And elbow them. If that sounds like your kind of thing, sign up!
The instructors are enthusiastic and fierce, but encouraging. I like ‘em. There’s an underlying sense of discipline, perseverance, and a strong work ethic here — everything you’d expect from a good martial arts gym. We just started, but we plan on attending class once a week. It’s $ 59/month for one class a week; it’s a good deal.
I expect this is a good place for kids, too. I see them in the other classes, and little kids in martial arts gear are so cute.

We recently enrolled our five years old here after reading positive reviews and I’m really happy with Alpha Martial Arts. I love that they encourage positive teamwork and incorporate great moral lessons into the class (homework included!). The price is a little more that an I anticipated so be warned — this isn’t a discount marital arts class — it’s a true training studio and they take their martial arts seriously — which I like. My daughter is not only doing kiddie push ups and jumping jacks, she’s also learning kick-butt Karate moves! (in a positive encouraging manner of course). Highly recommend it for parents who are willing to invest in their kids’ martial arts training,

Without a doubt, enrolling our two young daughters in karate classes at AMA was one of the best parenting decisions we’ve ever made. Not only are they learning confidence-building martial arts skills, they are also becoming compassionate, courteous leaders thanks in part to the school’s «POWerful Words» character development program.
But what makes AMA stand out from all the rest is the people. Owner Chris Herrman is extremely dedicated to his profession and even more passionate about working with each of his students to succeed… on the mat and in life. Chris’ enthusiasm is clearly shared by his staff and instructors. The school offers exciting, challenging classes for kids of all ages. I recently took their kickboxing class (it rocked!) and fellow parents attend the school’s highly-rated adult karate classes.
We’ve been a part of the AMA family for nearly three years and will be long after our daughters receive their black belts. I’d give AMA 10 stars if I could; my daughters would give them «Infinity stars» because they love the teachers and the classes are never boring. Thank you Lisa W. for introducing us to this amazing school.

A great martial arts experience for kids, 5ish up through high school. (And adults too). Working towards a junior black belt can be an experience of self-confidence, control, and discipline that’s hard to find anywhere. Chris Hermann, who owns the school and leads classes, inspires discipline, hard work, individual effort, and values that help kids in all aspects of their life. Classes are challenging but non-competitive — each child is working on improving their own effort and reaching their own goals. The school also requires things like the Powerful Words homework in order to impress positive values on the participants. All in an atmosphere of fun, encouragement, channeling energy and aggression in positive way. Chris encourages the kids to be positive members of their community, by modeling community involvement (they host free stranger-danger classes, participate in the Furry 5-K and the Big Climb as well as other charitible activities).
For young kids the two-day-a-week commitment can be a lot, but it’s worth it. And for middle and high school kids who want to take that extra academic or music class, two classes plus qualifies for a year-round PE waiver in public school.
Great school, great staff and leadership, positive values. Two locations now — just north of the U Village on Blakely, and new school up on Capital Hill.

At first glance, this place looks a little sketch… maybe it’s because of the ghetto yellow sign in the front, or because the classes are held in a basement, or when you look in the window there’s a man with no shirt on and then you realize it’s a dummy… nonetheless, this place offers an awesome kick boxing class! I’ve been going for a month now and have decided that it is one of the best cardio workouts I’ve ever done, and I’ve tried a lot of things in my day. Not only does it get my heart racing, but it’s a lot of fun and 45 minutes goes by in a flash. The instructor is super cute, full of energy, can definitely kick some ass, and she is able to mix technical skill with fun obstacle courses etc. to spice things up.
The class usually has around 8 –10 people, all who are at different fitness levels and ages, but yet each person is still challenged. The best thing is that the first class is free!!! I recommend that everyone give it a try — you’d be surprised at how much stress and angst is expelled. I really like ending my day by kicking and punching as hard and as fast as I can… I just imagine all the exasberating situations of the day or how frustrating relationships can be and then I feel at peace. My one complaint is that the class is from 8:15pm-9pm and I am usually wide awake for another hour and a half which makes it hard to wake up in the mornings. One time I even went for a jog around Green Lake afterwards because I had so much energy.
Anyway, it’s definitely worth checking out — but beware — you will probably get hooked!
