History

Established in 2009.

Located in historic Capitol Hill, Artful Dodger Tattoo & Comics opened with the intention of debunking the perception of the «intimidating tattoo shop». ADTC has achieved this goal, and has made customer service equally as important as delivering quality tattoos. Because of this philosophy, Artful Dodger Tattoo & Comics is considered one of the best in Western Washington.

Business Owner

Lucky has been in the tattoo industry for 15 years and opened ADTC in 2009. He wanted the feel of the shop to be an extension of two of his favorite things: art and comics. Lucky focused on the tattoo and art side of his obsession for the first 4 years of the shop’s existence, bringing in some of the most talented artists from around the country to help give clients the best tattoo experience possible.

More recently Lucky has also brought his comic obsession to the shop focusing a lot of efforts into creating a nerdy retail experience like none other. A self-​proclaimed nerd himself, Lucky is not shy about showing off his Star Wars sleeve, his obscene amount of toys lining the walls, flipping through the comic book bins, or discussing the finer points of Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Battlestar Galactica.

Lucky works Wed-​Sat, open-​close and is more than happy to talk with you so come in to the shop to take a look around, say hi to Lucky, and get your nerd on!

Taylor was AMAZING. I was in Seattle for one day only, had a slight idea of what I wanted, but they took me in as a walk-​in, gave great feedback on the tattoo idea, and then I paid a super reasonable price! The actual experience was amazing, in that Taylor was kind, had a light touch, and the tattoo is healing BEAUTIFULLY. Seriously, my aftercare is shit, but it’s already (2 days later) looking 10 000 times better than some of my older tats like three weeks into the healing process. Amazing.

The best staff ever. They make you feel comfortable and at home. Nothing but good vibes here. With a lot of dope and talented artists to choose from. I’ve been getting my tattoos from Alivia for the last couple years now and she always goes above and beyond my expectations. Went from just wanting one piece done to becoming a regular. I had a concept and design in mind that I wanted to get inked on my forearm but I wasn’t sure where and who to go to that would fit best to work my style. I was searching online for artists from Bellevue to Seattle… As soon as I found Artful Dodger Tattoo and saw Berger’s portfolio, I knew this is exactly where I need my project done… so I emailed Berger directly to setup an appointment and attached my draft design. He was professional and answered all my questions. at the same time, made it easier for me by just doing the consultation online as I live far from Seattle.
When I walked in the shop on the day of getting my ink done… staff immediately asked if I needed assistance… the place was clean and had a fun environment (they had video games and comics!)…made me forget that I was about to get myself poked by needles Lol
Met Berger in person and talked more about the details of my design and placement. I admit that I can be very particular and am not the fastest decision maker. It’s because of my fear of not getting what I want as I already have some tats in the past that I kinda regret just bec I did not communicate what I exactly want. I can be a pain in the butt Lol But the man was very patient and calm. He took the time to draft my design and gave me redrawn choices until I was happy with the final draft.
I wanted the entire project done in one session, and in between 3 – 4 hours Berger managed to complete my tattoo… very impressive… and it was all worth it! He did an exceptional job! Went beyond my expectations. From the design, colors and shading to lining… Definitely Cool! Everyone who’s seen my ink appreciated it and this is something I can truly say I love! So overall, the customer service, price, workmanship, and environment at Artful Dodger are great! If I need more ink projects done in the future, this is exactly where I’ll be going back to!

Got my first tattoo here and it was a wonderful experience. Tammie walked me through everything I needed to know and patiently answers all my questions. Then, while actually getting the tattoo, we had some of the most fun (and random) conversation I’ve ever had. She really put me at ease and made this new experience incredibly enjoyable. Oh, and the tattoo looks great as well! I couldn’t be happier. :)
Tl;dr. This place is great and you should check it out.

My husband and I were on our honeymoon in Seattle and wanted to get tattoos. We found Artful Dodger via Unilocal and sent them an email explaining what we wanted. Berger responded right away and we set up a consult for the next day. Berger and Taylor executed exactly what we wanted, and in a limited amount of time! The entire staff was friendly, the environment was warm and inviting. I highly recommend Berger and Taylor.

Had my tattoo done by Jake and he was amazing. Very helpful, polite, and he did amazing work. He did 3 tattoos for me in one sitting and he was great, amazing line work, detail, and shading. He came up with a really great design for a tattoo idea I gave him, 10x better then I imagined originally.
Would definitely go back and highly recommend Jake.

Love this place! Had a small tattoo done by Alivia yesterday. She was so kind, organized and did an amazing job.
I scheduled my tattoo a few weeks out. The process was easy to book my appointment, and they even sent me an email to remind me a few days before! I also got a thank you email with my aftercare instructions after I left.
Great place with awesome customer service!

Came here yesterday to get a Valkyrie lady on my left thigh, and just like my last visit, I left sooooo happy!
Both times here I got my ink from Alivia. From a previous post I mentioned that she is just an overall chill, nice, and super cool person, but now I can sing it from the rooftops! She has always been super easy to contact and this last experience was no different. I did not see my tattoo sketch until I came in to get it done, but if you’ve seen her work (seriously, go check out her Instagram!) you know she has mad skills with lady figures! She probably has one of the gentlest, if not THEE gentlest touch ever, as I got my work done super fast and with little pain. I’m not going to lie, all tattoos hurt, but she makes the experience so easy!
Like always, Artful Dodger is always super clean, with really friendly staff! I love coming in a little early so I can check out all their comics and cool nerd stuff!!! Plus, they recently added arcade games to the floor! WHAT?!! Got to play old school King Kong and Big Bucks World! Came to find out that I have a pitiful shot…
Anyways, I’m so happy with this place! Amazing atmosphere, genuinely nice people, killer art skills, and just good old fashioned great customer service. I trust the people here and know that I’ll be back sooner rather than later.

This place is great! Very good quality work, very talented artists (whose artistic ability is NOT limited to comic-​style drawings!). I can’t recommend Delaney enough – I just got my third custom piece from her and she’s an amazing artist. Her drawings always turn out way cooler than what I had imagined. This shop has cool/​unique flash art specials too!

This is my First tattoo and I was planning to get it from last one year. I came Seattle for a trip and decided to get the tattoo done. After a thorough research, I found this Tattoo shop and I went there. I was welcomed warmly and Taylor did my tattoo. I wanted to write my Hubby’s name and wasn’t sure whether he will draw something of my expectations. But as soon as he came with the design, I finalised it in that second. He is very talented and has lot of patience. Finally it came out to be awesome and if I ever decide to get the second one I will surely come here!

Hopefully next month my sleeve will be finish! I’ve been coming here to see Alivia for the past year and she is nothing but amazing. She’s so talented and I love that she was able to turn my idea into such a beautiful piece. The staff here is great as well! Got a Friday the 13th flash tattoo from Cory back in February. Beautiful design, friendly guy, all seemed well.
3+ months later, it’s still raised as hell. It’s not itchy, red, or swollen, just raised. Pretty sure it’s scar tissue. I didn’t get it infected, and I’m not prone to keloid scarring.
This isn’t what I signed up for. If I wanted scarification, I would have gotten it.

This place is AMAZING.
My friend recommended this place to me after I was searching for a tattoo shop in Seattle. I’ve gotten my other tattoos back when I lived in another state.
I’ve gotten two tattoos by Berger and one with Lonnie; I’m very satisfied with their work!
The shop is always clean and has a great collection of comics and toys. The staff is super informative and they aim to please.
I would recommend this shop to anyone.

Yes, this is a 5-​star joint. Yes, Tammie is amazing! Yes, you should get a tattoo here, unless it’s a neck tattoo, I don’t approve of neck tattoos :) –I got a small tattoo and I am exceedingly impressed with Tammie’s ability to get detail into my small, yet delightful tattoo. It’s not the size of the tattoo…
Everyone was VERY friendly– seriously. Space was big, clean and they have tons of cool stuff to look at. If you read my other reviews, you’d know I’m a bit of a clean freak, I saw no dust or signs of neglect, despite their abundance of knick-​knacks.
I won’t be back, because I am not sure i’ll get another tattoo but if I were… I’d got back to Tammie. She was awesome.

I have wanted a tattoo since I was 17, but I have a needle phobia. Like serious-​as-​a-​heart-​attack nasty fear. I have freaked nurses and doctors out by going into shock, passing out, having convulsions, you name it. But for my 46th birthday, I was DETERMINED.
I gave a picture to Berger, who would be doing my tattoo, and explained that I wanted a luna moth, not heavily stylized, but pretty true-​to-​form. He was SPOT ON. His art was perfect. I wondered how it would transfer to my skin.
He handled my fear fairly nonchalantly, so I couldn’t get caught up in my head. «You’ll be fine. Let me know if you need a break,» he said.
He was right; I was fine, and the time went by quickly. Sure, it hurt, but it wasn’t even a fraction as painful as a wax. I would do this again in a heartbeat. I probably will.
I have sensitive skin, but my beautiful tattoo healed quickly. In fact, it didn’t even itch until 4 – 5 days later while I was on vacation in New Orleans. It was hard not to keep it covered and out of the sun. I got so many compliments on my vacation, people asking where I had it done. One person asked if it was REAL.
Thank you so much, Berger! Every time I look down and see my gorgeous luna moth, the more I love it. You’re the best.

STAY AWAY! The manager is unprofessional and only cares about collecting a deposit. She’ll overbook without consulting with the artists… and then try and swindle you out of refunding your deposit, when the artists push out the work by months.
The one artist I dealt with was pretty cool and up front about his availability, he took me in for a quick tattoo and told me he wasn’t available before 6 weeks to finish the larger piece I had in mind. When I called, a week later, to book a follow-​up appointment, I was surprised when the manager booked me with the same artist that same day. She insisted on a deposit. When he obviously wasn’t available and told me I would have to wait at least 6 weeks, I told him I would prefer not waiting that long, the artist was totally cool. But when I tried getting my deposit back, the manager would do it. I had to exchange numerous emails with her, the artist… I wouldn’t give in, out of principle. After 3 weeks I finally got my deposit back!!! What a hassle for $ 50 from a potential repeat customer who would have spent 5 times that on the second tattoo! Plain bad business!
The other artists also seem pretty good, but not worth putting up with the manager’s attitude and total lack of customer service and common sense, especially when there are hundreds of tattoo shops in the Seattle area!
Don’t settle on this shop, look around, you’ll find much better! Better organized, friendlier, more professional! I certainly did!

I have now spent 7 – 8 hours here getting tattoos and I plan to keep it up. After getting my first tattoo while living in Vegas and hating it and the shop I went to, I really was not excited to get a tattoo again. So, I spent the last 2 years trying to find the perfect place and artist locally to make sure I get it right this time. I found Alivia/​Alicia (Same person but Alivia is somewhat of a stage name) via Instagram and really liked her work and style, I also really liked the shop and how it was setup. The Shop itself is a hybrid comic book store/​Tattoo shop so, it felt extremely comfortable and everyone was nice. Alivia and I sat down and I gave her my over detailed ideas for my sleeve and she was able to put it all together and add her spin to it. I have had 3 sessions now with her and have several more scheduled because I have felt so comfortable with her work and the quality she produces. I can honestly say I look forward to getting tattoos now and I have to pull back the reigns a little to make sure I don’t lose all my «canvas» in 1 year.
The secret truly to having a good experience now I feel is:
1. find a artist that specializes in style you like. Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr are the best ways to find this.
2. know what you want but, be flexible in your idea. If I was not flexible I already know that my ideas would of looked like garbage so, let the artist be an artist.
3. you get what you pay for, so don’t go shopping based on pricing.
4. It’s a tattoo dumb dumb it is going to hurt embrace the pain.

Alivia is fantastic! She’s fun to chat with and I felt I was in more than capable hands. She works quickly — we estimated 4 hours for the whole thing and she finished in only 2.5 hours. I will absolutely be back for more!
Bonus: they’re also a great comic/​collectible shop.
