Beach Comber Kids Cuts

What a gem this place is for kids! I had long been putting off getting the first official haircut for my kiddo, but I finally decided that it was time and that time was NOW. While I know appointments are important, I thought I would pop over and see if they would take a walk-​in. She was very sweet and friendly and said, of course and please have a seat. I saw that there was a fun play room for the kids to play with toys while we waited. The wait wasn’t long at all and it was time for the haircut. She was very friendly and reassuring and the whole experience was very pleasant. No tears. I would highly recommend Beach Comber Kids for a first haircut or just an upkeep haircut.

We went here last summer. This place gave my son the «dumb & dumber» movie haircut as my husband calls it.
They have videos and game area for kids, which is nice distraction for kids. But the cut was bad!

I took my 29 month old son to Beach Combers today for his first haircut. I was nervous for several reasons. He has very curly, textured hair. He never lets me touch his hair, screaming and pulling away whenever I try to comb it or even gently untangle it. Beach Combers has some mixed reviews.
We had a great experience! The woman who helped us was friendly, and enthusiastic. She was thrilled to work with with my son’s textured hair, and very helpful with suggestions of products to use. My son picked a movie, sat still (on a cute whale seat) and was quiet for 20 – 30 minutes while I watched in awe as his tangled fluffy mess was tamed into a cute, still curly manageable shape.
When it was over, the stylist picked up my smiling son (very child-​friendly) and gave him his choice of a lolly pop.
I was am happy and impressed with this place and will be back again!

I’m surprised at all the positive reviews of this place. In short: they simply don’t seem to like kids, and the place is nasty.
We started going to Beach Combers to support a local business, and because it was the only kid’s salon I knew about. We took my son there, and the first haircut he got there was fine. The seating was awkward and unstable, and the place seemed filthy, but the people seemed nice enough and his hair looked cute. The next two times were a different story, though.
Terrible hair cuts, and my son, who doesn’t mind getting his hair cut, cried the whole time, both times. He was uncomfortable and not stable in the seats, there was no way for my husband to effectively stabilize him and comfort him, and the women cutting his hair both seemed incredibly annoyed by my son’s crying (because he’s the first 2 year old in the history of the world to cry?), which makes the crying worse, when you’re being glared at and your head is being jerked around by someone you don’t know. He got terrible hair cuts (the last one had huge notches taken out of the back of his hair), had a terrible experience, and the overall state of the place was just downright dirty. My husband wouldn’t let my son play in the back room, it looked so gross.
We just took my son to the Salon at Kid’s Club after saying «never again» to Beach Combers. Shockingly, my son LOVED it – not one tear. He could sit on my husband’s lap if he didn’t want to sit in one of the awesome cars, the woman who cut his hair was REALLY good with him, attentive, sweet… actually liked kids. And it showed.
My advice to the stylists at Beach Combers: if you don’t like kids, which you clearly don’t, working at a kid’s salon is not a good career choice. My advice to the owners of Beach Combers: please hire stylists who are good with children and can handle and appreciate toddlers and babies. Also? PLEASE clean the place up. It’s disgusting.

This is my first Unilocal review, if that tells you anything about my experience. I’m glad to hear that others love it, but my experience was not positive. I wish it were.
I had taken my son to the Kids Club at U Village twice before this haircut, but decided to give Beachcombers a try because a friend recommended it and I thought it would be more convenient than the Village. The price was very similar, maybe a couple of bucks cheaper.
They have the standard (for a kids’ salon) fun chairs and toys to entertain the kiddos. They also had videos, which was a nice touch (although the machine didn’t work when we were there).
But that’s where the positives end…
When we got there, the first thing I noticed was a floor covered in hair. It really bothered me and gave me a very dirty feeling, especially for a place where I was taking my 1.5 year old. If the floor was this dirty (and I’ve watched stylists sweep up hair in seconds hundreds of times and there was no one else there when we arrived, so I have a hard time seeing any excuse for it), how dirty would the toys (which my toddler was bound to put in his mouth) be?
The stylist (I wish I knew her name) was nice enough, but she kept telling my son to hold still and trying to get him to tilt his head every which way. I would have thought that was silly to ask of a toddler, but since I had been to the other place twice and they never once expected his head to be in a specific place, I knew it was bush-​league.
She hacked away at his hair, making me very nervous. It turned out better than I was expecting while watching her, which isn’t saying much. It was a pretty bad cut (although I could imagine worse), and as it grew out it didn’t get any better.
As we were preparing to leave, my son noticed the toy room in the back. I followed him back there. It was so, so dirty — just grimy everywhere. Yuck.
We tend to go a long time in between cuts. It’s been considerably less time since the cut at Beachcombers than I waited after the previous two cuts, but his shag is so awful right now, not the least bit cute like it normally is growing out, that we are heading back to the Kids Club tomorrow to get it fixed.

I have been taking my 3 year old son to Beach Comber Kids Cuts for a few years now. We see Bridget who is great to work with and does a great job with my son’s hair. We’ve been to some other stylists who seem to have a default short cut they give every toddler boy and Bridget appreciates that we like our son’s hair on the longer side. I also like supporting a local small business by going there.

My daughter and I love Beachcombers. We moved to Seattle in 2008 and found this place soon after. This last weekend, we relocated out of Seattle and almost the last thing we did before boarding the plane was go by for one last haircut.
My seven-​year-​old daughter goes back and forth a lot on whether she wants long hair or short or in between, but every haircut over the last four years has been perfect. I can’t even say what is best about this place, because everything is just right:
*A room full of toys — even air hockey — with a fun seascape mural on the wall makes waiting easier than it could be.
*Movies to watch during the cut — my DD’s favorite part
*Sea creature seats are fun to «ride» during the cut
*Sparkles in her hair are the perfect ending
*And the price is just right
We love this place, have recommended it to many, many friends, and will miss it.

We have been seeing Rae for years. She does a really nice job on my daughters hair. She can do a perfect inverted bob (sp). It is pricey but it is really a designer cut, so worth it. Sometimes they run late but the playroom makes waits tolerable.

Very professional, patient and will definitely be going back again. Thanks for making my daughter’s hair looks so adorable. Waiting area is so good, my kids love it.

Definitely go see Kelly; she is very friendly and my son thinks shes awesome! Not too pricey; no tears!

I’ve been to Beachcombers numerous times since my now elementary age kids were little. My feelings about the place are mixed.
Pros:
The haircuts are sometimes pretty good.
The kids love the playroom.
The videos are a great touch and keep the kids interested and still.
It’s conveniently located.
Cons:
The customer service is not good and many of the stylists we’ve had have seemed unfriendly.
We’ve had some bad haircuts, especially as my girls have gotten older. Twice, my daughter has had an uneven bob.
They don’t book enough time for older kids. An 9 year old with thick hair is going to take more time than a 2 year old with mainly fuzz, but they don’t seem to book any extra.
They charge extra for shampooing and don’t do it automatically.
They don’t take VISA. Who carries a checkbook anymore?
I switched my girls to Salon Cool this year, but the haircuts we’ve had from them have been horrible, so I’m considering going back to Beach Comber. I wish there were more options in the Ballard area.

My son is 2 and a half years old and has Autism, he sees Kelly and we love her! She is incredibly patient and always does a fantastic job! As any parent of a special needs child can attest to – haircuts are not always easy for our children! Kelly at Beachcomber’s makes it pretty painless. (For the parents and the kids!!) I can’t say enough positive things about this place, it’s awesome!

Beachcomber makes it so easy for me to get my girls hair cut in a fun, easy and convenient way. Yes, its not inexpensive. If you’re looking for inexpensive, try Fantastic Sams or the like. But they don’t have 50+ dvds to distract your child or a playroom for your other child to play in while on deck for their turn. They also have the cutest locally made hairbows and tutus for very reasonable prices and also have temp hair color gel and glitter spray for those fun hair moments. Kelly, the owner, is my favorite stylist by far, but they’ve all given my girls nice cuts that have lasted and grown out well. You can also drop in for a low cost bang trim during regular biz hours if needed, which is so much better than me going at my child with cuticle scissors while she whimpers «don’t cut me». You can book ahead and sometimes they can squeeze you in during the week at shorter notice. Love it!

I took my son to Beach Combers for his first haircut and it was a horrible experience. The place was chaotic when we arrived and no one greeted us. The stylist did not offer my son a cape, so hair got EVERYWHERE. She sprayed water on me twice (instead of on my son) and scraped me with the scissors more than twice. She did not appear to know how to cut a child’s hair, especially for a first haircut. She kept complaining that her long fake nails were getting in the way. On top of all that, my son’s hair looked awful; it was choppy and not even.
Another stylist offered to help fix it and I believe that she was the owner, but she didn’t apologize even though she witnessed everything that had occurred. I finally told her that I was very disappointed with the experience and she told me that there would be no charge for the haircut, but she still didn’t apologize.
I’ll never go back. My friends have had great experiences at the salon at U Village. That’s where we’ll be going for all future haircuts.

Here is how beach combers works.
— Call make a reservation (my was for my daughters first haircut which they give a discount)
— Show up
— Pick a funny chair and video for your kid to watch.
— The hair stylist picks up some siccors makes a funny face and talks in a funny voice.
— *Snip Snip Snip* (litterly three snips)
— That will be $ 24.
— You hand over the money with a confused look on your face… did I just get mugged.
— You cut your own kids hair till they are old enough to really need it «styled»
They have a sweet infrastructure with a play room and tvs etc. And the stylist knew what she was doing with kids hair. I just wouldn’t go unless it is really worth it. Or you will poke out your kids eyes if you do it yourself.

Very good children’s haircuts. I’ve used three different women here and all did amazing work. Why go here? They have the skills, they have videos and toys to keep the tots from spazzing out while they are coiffed, they have a HUGE back room full of toys and riding gizmos for while you wait (although they’ve always been on time for us), cute chairs like a sea turtle for them to sit on, and good hair products.
Their cuts are $ 24.00.
They rarely answer their phone but have always called me back within a few hours.
Parking can be a little tough but we usually manage within a couple blocks at most.
Good place for a child’s first cut; they put a lock of hair on a little card for us like a certificate of his first cut. The place is good for photos if you are so inclined. There’s a huge wall in the back of other kid’s cuts. Good mags for dad to read while mom hovers around the chair.
All in all, my first choice in Seattle for this service.

I’ve been to this business twice and it was two times too many. The first time they were average, but I thought I’d give them another try.
When we arrived, we stood there (me, my husband and our two young children) for about three minutes with no, «Hello» or «One moment please» while one of the women swept up and the other woman moved around some chairs. My husband and I were across the room from each other and were so shocked we actually started laughing – I mean, we were having to move around so the woman could move the chairs and still no, «Hello» or «excuse me».
While my child’s hair was being cut, the two woman in the shop chatted about who was going to listen to customer messages and who would call them back and then chatting about work, she did not speak to me or my child once during the haircut. As she cut my child’s bangs, I was the one who said, «Close your eyes!»
It was extremely poor customer service and a very sad haircut experience for my child. We won’t be back and we’ll tell our friends, and perhaps even strangers at the park to steer clear of these sheers.
The hair cut was nice and very close to what I wanted, but the experience was tremendously disappointing.

These ladies are pros when it comes to kids’ haircuts. My daughter sat on this wooden dolphin thing with Baby Einstein and a toy to distract her they wanted her to look down etc. She was having so much fun she was too distracted to think about the lady with the scissors! They did a nice job with the haircut too, cute little bob.
