The Credit Union Difference
As a credit union, we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative that exists to serve our members, not to make a profit. Unlike many financial institutions, we do not issue stock or pay earnings dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, earnings are returned to members in the form of great rates and lower fees. We are motivated by the credit union concepts of open membership, democratic control, and returning profits to members, staying true to the credit union guiding principle of «people helping people.» BECU and its employees are involved in statewide community programs, donating both time and money to outreach projects involving housing, employment, education, and the Credit Union Movement.
We offer everything from checking accounts to auto loans to home loans and beyond. Visit our www.becu.org today and find out more about how BECU can help you.
History
Established in 1935.
BECU was founded in 1935 when the country was still struggling under the weight of a collapsed economy. A group of Boeing workers came together to form a new kind of financial institution. Inspired by a Reader’s Digest article on the benefits of credit unions, they organized the Fellowship Credit Union to provide a banking alternative for themselves and their fellow Boeing workers. Each of the 18 original founders contributed 50¢ accounting for total beginning assets of $ 9. It later became known as Boeing Employees Credit Union. And now it’s simply called BECU.
Today, BECU is more than 675,000 members strong with assets in excess of $ 9.2 billion. We are the largest credit union in Washington and the fourth largest credit union in the U.S. As BECU continues to add products, services, and locations, we recognize and appreciate our real strength is our members. We are truly committed to bettering the financial lives of our members.
