Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe

Correct me if I’m wrong, but WS doesn’t have many vegetarian/​vegan restaurants to choose from. So I was pretty excited to try Chaco Canyon when they opened a few years ago. I’m sure glad I did, because I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve tried. My usual is the house salad and half an artichoke melt, which are both delicious! Duh! The salad is light and refreshing: spring mix, grated carrots, sprouts and a citrus vinaigrette, I believe. The sandwich is warm, toasty and so flavorful with this cheesy-​less artichoke spread, sliced cucumber and sprouts. So delicious. Some other dishes I’ve tried and would recommend are:
Lentil burger
Jerk chili
Hippie bowl
Cheesy potato soup
Yam, kale and quinoa bowl
Granola w/​milk alternative
The menu has a nice selection of dishes, and I can’t wait to try all the other ones. They also have a rotating specials menu.
Bonuses: children’s play area, lots of seating and free wifi.

The menu here is diverse, yummy, and healthy. I ask everyone to only support restaurant’s like this one; vegan, organic, working towards sustainability. Please boycott all other restaurant’s until they change and take on these essential values.

I love these guys. Love, love love. The food is of exceptional quality and I feel great after I eat there. Most negative comments have to do with price or speed, but if you pay attention it’s clear why things cost a bit more and take a bit longer. First, read their ingredient lists for what you order. There is no BS ingredients throughout, and everything is made fresh by Chaco. Why is their Lentil Burger (my favorite thing on the menu) $ 14 instead of $ 12? Because they’re not re-​heating a frozen Morningstar product — they’re making it from scratch. Same with the sauce, same with the soup, same with the salad dressing. With regards to speed, staff is generally pretty good about informing me of the times, which of course vary depending on how busy they are. But they’re not about fast food, they’re about Slow Food. I’ve spoken with the managers there, and they inform me that they don’t pre-​make, pre-​assemble, or use any silly equipment like microwaves. There are plenty of ways to make food faster, but they also reduce the quality and nutritive content, and you end up with food with less integrity. Soldir on, Chaco Canyon, we love you!

They say on their sign that the slow food movement isn’t about their service, but after waiting 20 minutes for them to take an order in front of me I gave up.

My daughter is vegan so we tried this place out one time on our way to a concert. We both LOVED it! Such a fun, quirky place that will open your taste buds to new flavors and textures. She was thrilled that no matter what she could eat anything they had. I had the Thai Peanut bowl and it was scrumptious. On our second visit I tried the Reuben (I think it’s called the Mofo) and it was so good too! The smoothies are delicious and they have so many flavors! Be sure and try some of the desserts too. Take them home if you’re full, They are always so sweet and helpful to us when we go. No it might not be the fastest place in town (they aren’t THAT slow) but well made food takes TIME and you won’t be disappointed. I also bought a kombucha mother there so I could make kombucha tea at home, (Very cool!) Just try this place out. It’s cool, fun and yummy!

The food is amazing and of great quality, especially their juicing and shots. If you’re sick, the flu buster is the truth! Their Egyptian lentil soup! So good. Cons is that it’s pricey and service is slow.

1) The service is fair and always good. If it is busy, it can be slow.
2) Avocado garden sandwich with added tempeh bacon (bomb)
3) Pure bliss juice (Bomb)
4) Banana bread (you are my love)
5) Tea, (I have only tried a few but they were all good)
6) Desserts (Chocalate tapioca pudding is probably the best one)
The only downside to this place, and this is only my personal statement, is that there are banana bread monsters out there who come in and take 20 loafs just to see your day crumble and fall into a whirlwind of depression.

The lentil burger is life changing add avocado like me. I was getting my tire fixed across the street from here and… Well the rest is history. The burger is amazing. I love the slow, hippie, we’re all in this together vibe. Can be slow but they let you know (catchy i know). But the burger is the best burger I have ever had, meat or no meat, hands down. Kinda pricy but worth it.

Service is extremely slow. If there’s 3 or more people people in line, you can expect at least a 20 – 30 minute wait. Everyone has a rude attitude there. Unless I’m in my work uniform I’m treated like scum. If I have my uniform on (I work at a food place as well) they respect me a little more. Within the last few months I think they hired new employees who actually seem to be a little nicer. They look lazy and don’t move fast but they aren’t as rude as before. Some seem to not care about their appearance at all. I know that’s kind of a vegan thing to do, looking like you just rolled out of bed, but it’s not ok at a restaurant. The hippy look can be done with taste and respect for your customers.
It seems most people don’t know what they want to order when they get to the front. The people working there will explain very slowly and in long detail everything on the menu. There aren’t many places I’ve been to where almost no one know what they want to order before they get to the counter. It’s strange to me, but I try and be patient. After you order expect a 20 – 40 minute wait for your food to be brought to your table.
All that being said the food is very tasty. Some things are kinda bland but others are very good! I love the banana bread, the lentil burgers, and the artichoke melt. I’m giving it 4 stars because it’s still one of my favorite places for vegan food. Some days it deserves 1 – 3 stars. Often it only deserves a 1 star. But overall, especially with the new hires, a 3.5 or 4 star rating is accurate.

I’m totally addicted to Chia Pudding. I tried making it at home but no. There is some kind of magic in their food.
Chocolate chip banana bread is so delicious.
I find myself automatically driving there craving an artichoke melt.
And the community bowl! How awesome is that? You don’t have anything but a $ 5? You can get it. $ 1? You can get it. How about $.25? Sure! You can get it.
AND they have my most favorite coffee, Stumptown! I won’t drink anything else.

Nice service. It’s counter service, and a very laid back atmosphere.
Menu items are priced quite high. Definitely not affordable for the majority of people in the city.
Vegan which is awesome.

I like this place because it’s vegan, there’s a play area for my toddler and it’s near by. I don’t like it because it’s way overpriced, the menu is small, service is slow and they are frequently out of items. I like to take visitors there because it’s so close and they get to see that what we vegans eat can actually taste good. But I’ll likely be going to Indian on California, PCC, elliot bay brewing or thai now.
They do have some items that are tasty, but I’d eat here a lot more if there were more and they were reasonably priced. $ 14 for a bean burger and soup is why overpriced especially when you are ordering at the counter, getting your own utensils, filling your water and busing your table. I like doing all that for myself, but not when I’m paying premium. My advice to the owners, reduce prices and add some items to the menu. Your customers are beginning to shop elsewhere.

I need to come back here and try the food but I wasn’t super impressed with the dirty chai I ordered. I appreciated that it was handmade with love and I thought the little foam flower the barista poured on top was a nice touch, but the drink itself was pretty bland and in my opinion, overpriced.

I used to really like this place in its early years when it was a hole in the wall in the U-​district. Now it is obnoxious. It is expensive. Service is super slow. It has a super uppity hippy vibe. Lots of signs talking about «the community» in a cult like tone.
No fun.
…but the food is fantastic, so it gets 3

There is crap for cell reception in this building (I have Verizon and usually get great coverage in Seattle) and the WiFi is terrible. I am starring at my phone showing its getting a great signal but it’s super slow. In this day and age, people need to respond to work emails quickly… this is truly unacceptable!
I recommend getting things to-​go only if this is the closest Chaco Canyon location to you… otherwise, head on over to their U-​District or Greenwood location where you won’t feel like you’ve stepped back into the Stone Age.
I mean, seriously, slow internet is something I’d only wish on my worst enemies!!!

Everything is vegan… Amazing!
I wash I could eat like this everyday. I ordered the tofu scramble sandwich. The bread was perfectly toasted and served still warm. The scramble included silken tofu in a savory turmeric sauce, acommpanied by onions and Portobello mushrooms; everything was perfectly mixed and the flavor was well balanced. The juice was mighty refreshing post workout.
Everything was on my table in two minutes. Talk about fresh food fast!

Excellent. Such a nice surprise for everyone who wants vegan of vegetarian meals using local quality ingredients.
The monthly specials are usually very creative and feature sessional items.
Raw dishes offer a unique experience.
Go out of your comfort zone and try something new. I doubt that you will be disappointed.
Can get pretty busy at lunch and dinner time during the week but is a bit more relaxed during the weekend.

Love their BYO bowl where you can choose what to put in it and how much. I love choosing a little rice and a lot of veggies with their yummy baked tofu and kale… add to that the complimentary sesame seeds and nutritional yeast and hot sauces. Great organic choices all around and some good gluten free baked goods too. Their tea and coffees are also well made.
If you are taking to go bring your own silverware or travel mug as they do not provide flatware to go or lids for coffees and teas.
They are all nice and will accomodate any dietary need and will work with you.

Less than a week since my last visit and I decided to return and try the french toast for breakfast this morning (ain’t no shame in my game). I ordered the full french toast plate that came with a side order of the chia pudding. So delicious and definitely a great way to start my day. Also, the employees were friendly as always.
p. s. I ordered a hazelnut chocolate scone to go. YUM. I’m convinced you can’t go wrong ordering whatever item off the menu. Let’s be honest… I’ll probably be back in less than a week again.
