History
Established in 1947.
Group Health Cooperative was formed in 1947 by people looking for health care that was reasonably priced. A few dozen like-minded doctors and concerned citizens gave birth to a cooperative, providing prepaid medical coverage from family physicians and specialists working to coordinate care. These were radical ideas in 1947.
Group Health continued to innovate and grow over decades with many firsts along the way. First to promote pre-natal care and well child visits. First to offer mental health coverage and a consulting nurse helpline. First to cover a heart transplant. More recently we’ve led the way in implementing electronic medical records, and in allowing patients access to much of that record Ð from lab results to visit summaries to prescriptions history and doctors notes.
