Jax Joon

I used to like this place. Cute stuff for a reasonable price. That’s the good. The bad? It seems they don’t really want you to shop there. Today marked the third time within a week that I went there around 4pm only to find a sign on the door saying they had closed early. Pretty disappointing.

Like Horseshoe, I’m not sure how you go in here and don’t buy everything! This place is adorable and they have some great stuff. The first thing i noticed were these awesome fish pitchers (I have a feeling I’ll be back for one of those), but they have tons of pillows, cards, wall art, necklaces, and pretty cute clothing and accessories.
None of it was cheap, but it wasn’t outrageously expensive either. One thing I really appreciate about this place is that they carry some stuff in XL, which is a must have for my big boobs — yay for clothes that fit!
I’m so in love with this gem, I’ll definitely be back.

There was an attrociously rude, condescending sales person when I visited that made me walk right out the place. Yuck.

This place has cute things, but has such inflated prices and awful customer service, I would not recommend to anyone. Unless you’re in a hurry and have to get something right when you are there, you must go down the street (like a half mile) toward the Ballard Locks on Market and head to Kick It Boutique. Same goods, but better prices and service.
For ex, I bought a tribal knit sweater at Jax Joon for $ 80 which I thought was a good deal. But the stitching came unraveled and when I went to ask for an exchange, the owner refused and told me to bring it in for her to hand sew. I guess that’s better than nothing but if I wanted the hassle I would sew it myself. Lo and behold, Kick It has the same exact sweater for half the price!
Ugh. So annoying. Do yourself a favor and go to Kick It, Dream, or Bliss for the same boutique fashion for a better deal.

I stopped in Jax Joon a few days ago and fell in love with a blue desk with a map of Seattle on the top. I took some measurements and went home to mull it over.
I came back today to pick it up! I wanted to take it home so badly. I don’t own a car so I rented a ZipVan from 11 – 1, seeing that they open at 11AM. I got there and no one was around until around 11:30, when I noticed a sign that the new summer hours mean that it opened at 12! Whoops. I noticed someone moving around inside so I knocked on the door and explained the situation (I had to return the ZipCar by 1:00) and the proprietor not only let me in to purchase the desk, but helped me load it into my van! I ended up liking her work so much that I bought a dresser as well. (She and her husband, a fantastic team, make most/​all of the artwork inside.)
The kindness and helpfulness here was unreal, and everything inside the store is lovely. I love their style.

I could spend hours here and love most everything they have in their store. Fun and unique home goods, clothing, furniture, accessories. This store pretty much has it all and the staff has always been warm and friendly when I’ve stopped in. Can’t wait to make a trip here for holiday shopping, I’ll be able to knock out gift buying for almost everyone in one stop!

I feel compelled to write a review to counterbalance Julie L.‘s review (from Nov. 2013) about being treated rudely at Jax Joon because I’ve always found the staff here to be *really* personable. Let me start by saying, I am the type of person who would jump on Unilocal and write a review just like hers, if I felt I had experienced the same thing. I’m not from here and despite living here 20 yrs and loving a lot about Seattle, I do not love the prevailing pretentiousness of this city. I do not love the «Seattle Freeze», and yes, locals, it *does* exist… ask anyone from anywhere else. Also, I am not a 20 to 30-​something hipster, which this shop seems to cater to. I am a 40-​something who has been in this store four times and looked really «unhip» each time, having most often just rolled out of bed to shop the Sunday Farmer’s Market (where the vendors are a delight but many of the shoppers are rude and self-absorbed)…so I get it, Julie L. I get it when you say you’re treated poorly in shops where they take a look at someone and deem them «not cool enough to be shopping here», but I’m surprised you got that vibe at Jax Joon. Of the four times I’ve been in, a male in his 30’s (the owner, I believe) said «Hello» smiled sincerely and chatted me up a bit every time, each time being a busy Sunday a.m. with the shop full of market shoppers. The other time was a slow afternoon, midweek, I believe. A woman was working and I may have been the only one in the store. She greeted me with a «Hello» and a smile and said «Have a nice day» as I left. I’ve gotta say, I was kind of surprised, as I expected an attitude more like what you described simply b/​c I have been on the receiving end of that far too many times in Seattle shops… especially in pretentious Ballard and I think that was my first time in the shop.
So, I think either somebody was having an off day on the day you visited or they (graciously) took your words to heart after reading your review, b/​c I think JJ is one of the friendlier shops in Ballard and I’m really pulling for them, as so many small businesses struggle to survive. They have fun stuff and, as an artist, I like to go here for inspiration. I think the prices are pretty reasonable, especially knowing that some of their wares are from (local?) artists. I was eying up a really cool, large $ 57 pillow on yesterday’s visit, which I thought was very fairly prices for a handmade pillow in a boutique shop. I sew and I know how much work went into that pillow.
So, please give Jax Joon a shot… especially you, Julie L… maybe *you* were throwing off bad juju that day. I know I can do that and it does effect the way ppl treat me… or maybe the clerk working that day had just received some bad news or had wicked cramps or who knows what. I freely admit, I am a judgmental person (which is why I love to write Unilocal reviews!) and I need to work on giving ppl a break, so maybe you can too, Julie L.
My only beef about the store is the abundance of pseudo chalk art pictures. They’re cute and clever but there are too many of them… and soon they will be passé, anyway. There’s an abundance of other cool kitsch and hip décor this shop could carry and the owner/​buyer certainly has a good «eye»…they just need to mix it up a little more. I’m pulling for ya, Jax Joon. I would be sad if this shop doesn’t make it, and as a fellow small business owner, I know running your own show is not always an easy gig.

I am all about supporting local business, but not if it means giving money to someone rude. I was having a lovely day at the Sunday farmer’s market when I looked in the Jax Joon window. Eureka! I saw several signs that would make great Xmas gifs, a flask for the hub and a Narwhal shirt I had to have… till I went in and was totally dismissed and pointedly blown off by the rudest shopkeeper I’ve ever encountered. Pretty much ruined my day — I guess I wasn’t cool enough to shop there despite having money to spend and a desire to spend it. Luckily I found pretty much everything I saw there on Etsy in about 20 minutes — and for less — so am giving my money straight to independent artists and taking a pass on rewarding rudeness at Jax Joon.

Dense in objects and cool factor, I entered in this store not for the enormous amount if cute and original gifts, but because one of my colleagues was attracted to the small selection of male clothes, shoes and accessories. The Hey Dude brand is beautiful and ver affordable for its quality. This boutique is a hipster paradise, small enough to keep the charm and fully packed of items. My favorite were the collection of very colorful and chic earrings for $ 12!

Unique objects, great prices, and an awesome staff/​owner makes this a great place to find small gifts and household items. Don’t just stop by during Ballard Market hours so you can take time to look at everything inside.

This shop is full of unique furniture and accessories that are priced to sell. The shopkeeper let us empty a trunk to check it out fully, then gave us tips on where we might find similar items since the one she had didn’t match our needs. Really great customer service and, though we didn’t make a purchase this time, the awesome customer service and reasonable prices will bring me back.

I wandered into Jax Joon while doing some Christmas shopping, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. It’s a seemingly haphazard collection of lifestyle art, accessories, and clothing. It doesn’t really have enough of any one thing to call out as the focal point of the shop, and there isn’t enough consistency across the merchandise to assign a style other than «hipster eclectic.»
That said, it does make for an enjoyable browse even though nothing really jumped out at me. It’s another addition to the panoply of Ballard Ave specialty shops that may or may not figure out the niche it’s trying to fill. The ones that manage to get it dialed in go on to enjoy relatively long-​running success, while the others quietly become something else.
I think Jax Joon has potential to become one of the success stories, but it’s a little early to tell.

I’m kind of a spaz, so when entering a boutique shop of this nature I will hold my purse out in front so I don’t accidentally knock something over. Jax Joon is already snug as it is, so mommies with strollers take note please, I’m not Uma Thurman coat-​hanger skinny to slide past you and baby.
I like the layout of the store which is shaped like an upside down «L». Mish-​mash of home décor, mid-​century tableware, handmade pottery, crocheted pillows, custom-​made ottomans (BYOF: bring yo’ own fabric) for around $ 100! That is a steal, have you seen the cheap crap warehoused from China found at Target?
They have managed to display a solid amount of merchandise, yet still have enough room to pick up something to check out without knocking the whole shelf over. I was smitten to find a gift for my friend who is into chickens and roosters, and scored a cute chicken shaped candy dish.

this store is just adorable! kitsch, hipster, original, stylish, vintage with a hip twist. kind of reminds me of a specialized houseware store like west elm or a more unique urban outfitters of houseware. prices are moderate and you get something original and originally awesome. i loved their throw pillows, their typography signs, and their plants in cool vintage/​bright colored pots.
it’s one of those stores where you will always find something you didn’t see before so it’s great for browsing or buying a gift.
they also sell menswear too so maybe i shouldn’t say the store is adorable. so there is something for everything if you are into the hipster, original thing, and supporting LOCAL shops.
i’ll be back once i can decide what i want.

Hooray for Jax Joon! This place is dense with wonderfulness. Great home items for those who really don’t want the bland, mass produced stuff; a small collection of slightly hipster-​y men’s clothes; very interesting and eye catching wall hangings and art; some really fantastic furniture… its a store that reflects the taste and the eye of the owners, who are very warm, sincere and fantastic folks. We’ve bought everything from a large, old vintage chair to wooden wrist-​watches to some clothing and other very odd looking and fabulous housewares. Its a place we definitely visit whenever we are in Ballard. There are always new and interesting things to look at and to contemplate. And the prices are not absurd. Don’t be afraid… step into their world. There is definitely room for you.

I looked in the windows of Jax Joon and muttered to myself, «Don’t go in here. You’ll buy something!» And boy was I ever right. This store is one of the cutest shops I’ve seen in years. It reminded me of shops in Ponsonby, a cute and ecclectic shopping district in Auckland, New Zealand. Whether you’re looking for pillows, pitchers or even pictures, you’ll find something adorable here.
With steep prices comes great quality. I spied some fabulous pillows, unique wall hangings, and even men and women’s clothing accessories like wallet, hats, belts and jewelry.
If you have a friend that’s hard to shop for this store will meet their needs. And yours, too! I wouldn’t actually call anything here expensive, it’s just not low-​end or cheap. Think Pottery Barn prices, not Target. Except here you’ll get something that’s unique and special, and not made 10 million times over. I guarantee people will spot your find and say, «Oh, wow! Where’d you get this?» And you already know the answer… Jax Joon!

I’m a fan. In the era of super marked up items on Ballard Ave, these guys do it right. Kitschy cool art, furniture, pictures, clothes (for Dudes – there’s not many places you can buy good guy clothes for a reasonable cost around here). Owner is chill and really tries to keep customer’s costs down. Plus he makes custom bars that look rad and would look awesomer in my house. One day…

I walked into this store randomly while walking around Ballard and was immediately attracted to the store front, even though it was a narrow one. They had an awesome collection of furniture and other knickknacks. Everything was interesting but reasonably priced. Would definitely go back!

For fans of Space Oddity, The Field House and other niche specialty shops in Ballard, you will love Jax Joon. It has a great selection of one-​of-​a-​kind items including unique and stylish décor, hand-​made items, clothing, refinished/​distressed wood furniture, signs, lamps and more.
There are all sorts of cool items you didn’t even know you needed! I just got a mini church key bottle opener, an awesome candle and a cushion with a cool pattern. (They have a great selection of cushions in various styles and materials to choose from– no two exactly alike).
I find their prices much more affordable than their neighbors, possibly due to how new the shop is, though the proprietor assures me he has no plans to raise the prices. Still, you can find one-​of-​a-​kind hand-​built items for prices competitive with mass-​produced Ikea furniture, and with an heirloom quality that will far outlast their composite-​board counterparts.
One of the items on my «want» list is a bar made by the owner, Jake. I won’t quote prices but they are very affordable and you can custom order them in different styles, choosing from fabric upholstery or wood and other materials. I was concerned about moving them because they come already assembled but I was assured they are easy to carry up a flight of stairs by two movers.
Next time you’re in Old Ballard, make sure to stop in. Never know what you’ll find but it’s sure to be stylish, well-​made and affordable.
