This is not an overall review of Kenyon Hall. If it were, I’d award 4* instead of 5*, not too shabby at that. I’d like to praise a new event Kenyon Hall sponsored this year: Westside Walk, featuring Sousa(Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band), Samba(Brazilian Sambatuque), and Gospel(Pat Wright & the Total Experience Gospel Choir). Just terrific. Lots of energy, good musicianship, and ever so much fun. Audience participation invited at times, too. One of the best times I’ve had recently. Watch for a repeat performance next summer. Kenyon Hall sponsors a variety of events. Personally I like their jazz nights. Lou Magor, referred to in a previous post, is really a very, very good jazz pianist. If you haven’t checked out their schedule, you should!

I’m really surprised to see that nobody has Unilocaled Kenyon Hall yet especially since Eddie Vedder played one of his secret shows there last year, according to the West Seattle Blog. I’ll admit, I haven’t been to Kenyon Hall in years — in fact, the time that we went it was still called Hokum Hall, but other than the name it doesn’t appear to have changed much and we had a great time during our visit. Kenyon Hall is a one of a kind place celebrating vaudeville and silent movies and other great music. It features theater manager Lou Magor on a beautiful and impressive circa-1929 Mighty Wurlitzer. The pipes of this amazing organ stretch throughout the building and it’s something amazing to listen to when he plays it. Lou also does some singing, or at least he did during the Valentine’s Day show that we went to years ago that featured plenty of twisted love songs from guys like Tom Lehrer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that they have a V-Day show this year or else I would highly recommend it. We had a blast at the one we attended. Lou also teaches Kindermusik at Kenyon Hall, which I’m thinking about taking my little girl to even though it’s a 20 mile drive for us, but that Mighty Wurlitzer and that theater setting would be a wonderful place to take Kindermusik classes. So if you are in the mood for something completely different and love old time music and want to see people that truly love what they are doing perform, please check out Kenyon Hall. It really is a wonderful place.
