I had my first appointment with April yesterday afternoon, after finding the salon on Unilocal.I’m really pleased with the way my cut and color turned out. I am not great at doing a lot of styling and upkeep, and also wanted to keep enough length to be able to tie my hair up for the gym and on days when I don’t feel like dealing with it. April gave me a cut and beautiful highlights that make me feel stylish, but simple enough I can manage on my own.
The salon itself is a warm and welcoming place, with the bonus of having an adorable dog running around.

I love April! I’ve been going to her for several months– I initially went to her because I’m a natural blonde that had always wanted to try a dark red look. I had never gone dark and she gave me such a wonderful and dynamic color and cut (I have shoulder-​length thin hair that is awkwardly between straight and wavy– it can look super weird with a bad cut) I gave her an idea of what I wanted and the results were better than I had hoped for. Somehow even as the color naturally faded between visits it still looked good. And each visit since has been just as great! Also, she’s an incredibly lovely person. Easy to talk to, funny, generally delightful. The salon itself is really cute too. And they offer online booking which is convenient!

April is Awesome! I just moved here and we all know everyone hates leaving their hairdresser but I lucked out finding April! My hair was in desperate need of freshening up. I have very thin fine hair with no body. She did a great job helping me pick colors to revitalize my ombré and an amazing job with the cut giving my hair some body and flow even when I let it air dry. Excited about my next visit for darker fall colors. Extra good news… Parking on the street was no problem and the shop was very clean and nicely decorated!

I’ve been seeing Darcy on & off for years … after a bad hair cut elsewhere that took nearly a year to recover from, I told Darcy no one else would EVER cut my hair — & I couldn’t figure out what made me even let anyone else near me with scissors in the first place. But, oh no, some time off had Darcy suggesting I put my trust in April, which I did yesterday.
Result = perfect subtle natural looking highlights, fabulous haircut making my straight fine hair have movement. April listened to what I had to say, heard & executed. Kitty Hawk seems to attract the best. I’m super happy.

Lorraine you are the best! I came in after being over two years to get my hair done, busy mom with two kids. I decided I wanted get a long bob haircut longer in the front shorter in the back, and ombré hair color blonde with my natural black hair. My haircut turned out absolutely amazing loved it, my hair color I wasn’t to happy because it wasn’t a lighter blonde, but Lorraine let me know I can come back to get it redone, try it out for a week and if I didn’t like come back, she is super nice! I came back today and it turned out better than the picture I originally showed her. Thank you thank you I am complete satisfy.

April is amazing. Not only is she easy to talk to and smart and interesting — she gives incredible haircuts. I have boring straight hair and I have no time to deal with it — I brush it in the AM and that’s it, no styling, no hair drying. April gave me a cut that makes it look like I blow it dry to curl in. It frames my face perfectly and requires no work. She listened carefully to what I wanted and my realistic time frame and worked with me. I’ve had several cuts in the past that looked great on the day I left the salon but I couldn’t make it look that way again — no April’s cuts. My hair looks great every day even with my low maintenance style.
On my 2^nd visit to April, she highlighted my hair and did a superb job. I’ve had my hair highlighted lots of times but April has done the best, most natural looking job that I’ve ever had.

I have been going to Darcy for about a year and a half. What can I say! I love this place and her! The atmosphere is relaxing and cool. The décor is so tasteful. But there is not an ounce of snooty attitude from any of the stylists there. I have seen clients of every age and gender in here and every one of them seems to leave very happy. And then there is Darcy’s skills. She is amazing. Her cuts and color are the best I have ever had. She will tell you straight up if she thinks your idea of what would look good on you will or not. She listens but always keeps in mind the texture, color of your hair and how much time you want to spend on it. This is a lovely place and the stylists are top notch! You won’t be disappointed!

I was in need of a great salon and stylist and I went to Kitty Hawk (based on these amazing reviews) and Lorraine cut my hair. Lorraine is AWESOME! She gave me an adorable pixie (with curly hair, which is not the easiest thing to do) and was very attentive, helpful, and really understood how my hair worked (I have curly, fine, brown hair). She made me feel very comfortable (noticing the tea I was drinking while waiting and refilling it for me) and offered that I could/​should come in if I needed any changes after playing with it for a few days. She also gave me great advice about care and products. I love my new hair and new look. I will definitely be coming back! This salon lives up to its rating. I’m a happy camper.

I came to Kitty Hawk last week to get my first true salon haircut since June 2012. Having thought this out, I had picked out some pictures of what I was looking for. I had long medium brown hair extending at least 12 inches from the nape of my neck.
My appointment was at 9am, and I was the only person in the salon with my stylist, April. This could be an uncomfortable situation, but April was incredibly friendly and relatable. She made sure the coffee she made me was perfect. The ambiance of the salon is very friendly and welcoming with fantastic local art hanging on the walls.
What I appreciated more than anything was her concern for making sure I was on board with everything needed to happen to give me a cut similar to the pics I showed her. It meant taking off a decent bit of hair, which was great because upon her inspection the hair needed to be taken off (it was dead). It also included cutting some bangs, which I had not had in about 8 years.
The haircut was beautiful when I walked out the door, but I’ve taken a week to write the review to see how it settled in. It still looks amazing and is very easy to style! I have received numerous compliments from coworkers and friends. I have no doubt that I will continue going to see April as long as I am living in Seattle.

Just over a year later and I hope I never have to find another hair salon. I make the commute from the Eastside right past all those fancy over-​priced Bellevue salons just get my haircut here. I did end up getting that pixie cut late last spring and it looks amazing. April knows just how to cut my hair to give it a great shape that’s both cute and manageable and grow out nicely. She’s also a great colorist — her color mixes have been spot on what I’m looking for and the color stays vibrant for weeks on end — something hard to do with red.
There are now four rocking stylists here and they all seem to have fairly busy schedules. You can book your appointment online, which is awesome. Additionally, April has always been pretty responsive to emails and she’s gone out of her way to juggle some appointments for me a few times.
While April was on maternity leave I got a color and cut with Darcie (the owner), who is also very talented and did a terrific job. I’ve seen the work of all four ladies and I can’t imagine anyone ever leaving here unhappy. The stylists are all great listeners, very communicative, and will even consult with each other or give suggestions when asked if a client has a question about a cut or color, etc. The atmosphere is always warm and cozy and Darcie’s Boston Terrier, Ruby, is sure to give you a friendly greeting when you come in.

I have been to this salon 3 times since moving to seattle, and every time I am amazed. Darcy saved my blonde hair when another hairdresser in Capitol Hill turned my head pink. Lo took me from blonde to red, which looked amazing. And yesterday Amy did a brown ombré which faded into about 5 different colors. All stylists here are absolutely amazing and so talented. I will never go to another salon in seattle. Bravo ladies!

I am remiss in writing a review for Lorraine. She’s a great listener, fun to chat with, gives an awesome scalp massage, and absolutely knows her stuff. I’ve had my long hair cut super short into a very edgy/​stylish cut, that even when growing out continued to get compliments on. I strayed away, wanting to budget and have been underwhelmed with other stylists.
She’s the triple threat. Intuitive, fun communicator and talented. Finding the right hair stylist has been like finding a needle in a haystack.
She now takes care of my long hair. Keeping it easy for me to style under 5 mins. She gives me sexy hippie chic haircuts with gorgeous fringe. And always nails my color. I get more compliments on my hair whenever she does it. I’m hesitant about letting the cat put of the bag, because she already is tough to get appointments with. I’m confident that whomever works with Lo will treasure her as much as I do.

GO SEE AMY! I waited months to do anything with my hair after getting the worst haircut of my life at another salon, so by the time I got to Amy, my hair was in pretty rough shape. Amy is amazing. First of all, she’s the loveliest person. She listened as I explained all of the things I hated about my last haircut, mixed up perfect blond highlights, and simply transformed my hair. Gone were the grown-​out disaster bangs and layers, and in their place was a sophisticated, yet fun style that flattered my face. The color was spot-​on, and Amy is the first stylist I’ve ever had who actually took the time to apply partial highlights so well that it doesn’t matter whether I wear my hair up or down — my natural color and my highlights blend wonderfully, so there’s no awkward difference between the underside of my ponytail and the top. I cannot compliment Amy enough.
Everything about Kitty Hawk is fantastic. It’s in a great little residential area with plenty of free street parking, and the salon itself is small and welcoming. It’s the kind of place you walk into and immediately know you’re going to get personalized service from people who actually want to make you look your best. The décor is cheerful, there are plenty of magazines, and there’s a shop puppy!!! Really, just go to Kitty Hawk. It’s so worth it.

Today was one of those, «wow I love my hair» days and it made me realize… oops, I’ve procrastinated on reviewing the person who made this possible.
Thank you Amy Bates for being an AMAZING stylist and wonderful lady! I highly recommend Amy to anyone who is looking for a very talented stylist/​colorist. Amy really takes the time (and it did take some time with me) to listen to what you want, analyze color options and make recommendations based on the look you want to achieve and maintenance you are willing to do. She’s not afraid to be honest and give direction either and this is why I respect her as a stylist.
Amy is not only passionate about doing hair, but about continuing education and staying at the forefront of current trends and fashion (without being snobby or pushy about it).
I moved to Seattle two years ago and have bounced around from stylist to stylist. For me, finding a great stylist is about much more than just a good haircut/​color. It is about finding a person you feel comfortable with, respect and trust your hair with.
Finally, I found my stylist… Amy Bates! Amy, I will see you in January for another round of hair fun!
P. S. Amy took my hair from a dull/​boring mousy color and heavy layers to a stylish do with depth of color and a cut that worked with both curly and straight hair (something that takes finesse to achieve).

You gotta go to Kitty Hawk and see Amy Bates. Here is why I love having her do my hair: She is really in touch with trends, but is super creative and loves to work in a unique twist, that is inspired by my personal style. :)
Color — Last time I was in, we worked with the ombré trend, but she added a few blonde and red pieces that went all the way to my root, with some fire-​y red ombré style chunks all over and little peeks of black. Also, the color is a-​symmetrical, one side has more blonde, and the other, more red. Turned out so cool!
The cut — usually, I think my hair looks better worn up, but since Amy has been cutting it, I love wearing it down.
Finally, she is so friendly and a joy to chat with.
Amy has been doing my hair for awhile, but she just started at Kitty Hawk. What a cool space, easy to find, easy free parking and the shop is really cute and clean! Get your buns in Amy’s chair! :)

Lovely little salon, hard to tell it’s there from the outside but once you enter, it’s a stylish little sanctuary with great products and great hairstylists. (I assume everyone is great, considering that I had only seen April.)
I’m growing out my hair (again) and April made it look like I had an actual style, instead of an unruly mop. Thank you so much for rescuing me from myself!
Also, if you like dogs, this is the salon to go to. They have a cute little house pup!

I’m a week out from the best haircut I have ever had. Thank you April! April did an amazing job of listening to what I had in mind and providing input on what could work with my hair. I have slightly wavy hair, with a lot of volume. I don’t know how many times I have explained that to a hair stylist, had them nod, and then cut and style my hair. It usually looked good coming out of the salon that day with the product and expertise of the hairstylist. But one wash, and the next day I was Hermione from Harry Potter.
April gave me a great haircut that kept the length I wanted, with long layers, and a side bang. I can wash it, air dry it, and wear it out. The layers somehow de-​frizz the hair so well, and it naturally dries with these great waves and flips. It looks even better flat-​ironed.
Kitty Hawk itself is a great space, very clean and artistically decorated. It is unique and personalized, so that you don’t feel like you are walking into a hair cutting machine.
I highly recommend April at Kitty Hawk!!!

I’ve relinquished all control to Darcie. This started about 15 years ago and I have never looked back. Darcie is a true talent, super creative but also an excellent listener. She’s also become a great friend. Do yourself a favor, check out Kitty Hawk salon and put yourself in capable hands. I’m moving to San Francisco next week, and true to form Darcie fit me in for a last-​minute hair color/​treatment. Don’t know what I’ll do without Kitty Hawk in SF :-(

I don’t like hair salons. Not that I don’t appreciate a sharper looking me or someone carefully shampooing my hair while I ponder some non-​problems. What I don’t like are salons that remind me of toothpaste ad labs and where the perfect hair and make-​up seem the only things in life worth striving for.
Kitty Hawk is different. It’s completely and utterly unpretentious. The salon’s interior resembles a relaxing, coolly furnished living room. There’s no smell of chemicals. It’s not loud, not crowded.
And then there’s is Lorraine. She is calm, lovely, and talks about the coolest places in town. Her cuts are meticulous. There is no rush, ever. She thoroughly examined my hair at my first appointment — and I pointed out that a stressful time last year showed up in my hair (I had no idea). My hair is wavy to curly, rather thin and a bit difficult to handle. When I leave, it’s bouncy with a smidge edginess — just the way I like it.

How can you not love this place?
Funky furniture? Check.
Cool art? Check.
Awesome shop dog? Check!
Great cut and color? Yes please!
I’ve been going to Kitty Hawk for quite some time. It’s a small salon with 3 chairs and I was given a gift certificate to try them out years ago. I am glad I did! Darcie is so great, and I always enjoy my visits. I also have a TON of hair that is naturally curly and it is hard to find someone that is not only willing but able to cut a style into my mop but also takes the time.
The prices are reasonable too and the atmosphere is great. Thanks Kitty Hawk!
