Metrix Create:Space

I’m interested in learning more about CNC, laser cutting, and 3-​D printing so I stopped into Metrix a few weeks ago to learn about upcoming classes.
The girl at the front desk, although nice, couldn’t give me any specific information about upcoming fall courses even when asked for ANY information.
Today I saw on their blog an advertisement about using their later cutter (one of the areas that I’m interested in learning about). So I called to find out if it’s possible to schedule a tutorial and the guy on the phone said «No, we just print the files that you send to us.»
Now in reading other reviews on their Unilocal page I see that they have offered courses on 3-​D modeling and printing in the past. Why can’t any of the employee’s provide their expertise in these areas again? I’m left wondering if the people with the proper training have left and if so the remaining staff are really qualified to operate the 3-​D printers and laser cutter.
I see that there are plenty of positive reviews, and I’m willing to bet that if you’re experienced in the craft you’re looking to practice that this is a great space to do that. However for those novices of us looking for an introduction, this probably isn’t the place for you.
Off to find another Seattle Makerspace.

This has become my favorite place to do work at night. My job is creative and I am a night owl and not the kind of person who can work/​focus at home… I used to go work at coffee shops but now I almost always decide to come to Metrix. The environment is very positive, creative, focussed, and laid back. Everyone is working on different projects and it’s a mix of peaceful and productive– very conducive for getting stuff done. So happy I found it!

An amazing place to get work done, use WiFi, buy niche products, and just be around makers. A must visit if you have the hacker spirit.

Took my son here for a 3D modeling and printing class. The instructor was fantastic and my son called it his new favorite venue! It is like being in a combination of a mad-​science lab and inventor’s basement. I call it nerdvana. :-) They have 3D printers, laser-​cutters, PCB printers, powder printers, sewing equipment and more! Your creative juices will definitely flow here and the staff is great.

After I got the «red light of death» on my Nexus 4, I searched for ways to repair it. Finding instructions online, I ran over to Metrix, borrowed the tools I would need, and with a bit of time had my phone up and running again. The staff were so wonderful, thoughtful and helpful. I paid $ 5/​hr for using their tools — compared to who knows how much I would have spent sending my phone back to LG. This place is amazing and will work hard to get whatever you need done. Anyone can totally fix their devices, it just takes confidence and insight!

I went here today and Richard was working. I was treated so well! Even though coffee is self serve he still made me a cup. He taught me new things even though he was fairly busy. This place is awesome, esp when you don’t have the right tools or knowledge. But a little research does go a long way. Time to read, read and play!

WOW! Metrix is just about the coolest place in existence. I do a lot of scratch built mid to high power rocketry and constantly have projects backing up because I hate trying to cut out my fins with my crappy little jig saw… Enter the Metrix. About an hour with Brent and his wonderful 150 watt laser cutter… BAM! Super cool perfect fins and cheap! SO SO SO cool! Love this place. GEEKS SHALL RULE THE WORLD!

I have taken a handful of workshops here involving electronics and particularly, the Arduino. When in the neighborhood (which sadly, is not often), I like to set up and work on their wi-​fi which is never down and very fast. It is a nice community and very fun atmosphere. To give you a flavor of the place, my son and I stopped in fairly late at night to get some acrylic parts cut out with their laser cutter for a robot we were building. During our short visit there was one guy building a UAV (he was kind enough to give us a tour of it) and an artist planning a project. The only thing I would change is its location. It is way too far from Ballard.

Okay, I can’t rate them that high, but as my 5 year old says ‘THAT’S NOT FAIR” because I want to.

Ridiculously geeky place. FANTASTIC!!! I’m a little embarrassed that as one of the chicks there, I’m on a sewing machine. How girly.
However, I am an ex-​Holographer and I hope to get my techie back on soon. Love the free internet, free workspace, and if you need it, the $ 5 toolbox. Fabulous. Super sexy technician Plamana to help you dork out and Matt is cool too ;) Drink their coffee and listen in to other dorky conversations, «Ha – you call that a processor?» There is the fume of industry in here, as there is plexi cutting and soldering, so I don’t bring my kiddo to visit, but that’s okay, this is a great bat cave to hang out in on the weekends. Open till midnight!

Come sit at a table, use the blazing fast internet for free. Rent a toolbox. Work on a project. Listen to chill music. Play a game of Go. Use the laser cutter or 3D printers. Look at local art. Take a class in soldering. Meet awesome people.

Metrix Create: Space is the hippest geek hangout space in Seattle! Cost prohibitive equipment that costs tens of thousands of dollars is put at your disposal at inexpensive rates! Laser cuters, 3D printers, soldering equipment, fume hoods, a vending machine that spits out iPhone charger cables and Arduino circuit boards, tables and power. How can you get any better than this? And even if you aren’t working on the biggest thing since the light bulb or the personal computer, you can still drop by and watch others come up with all sorts of wacky electronic gadgetry, rocket parts cut from lasers, and prototyped plastic models made in 3D software, and all sorts of nifty stuff.

Excellent place to take electronics classes or rent time on equipment for projects. Nice people, the hours are good, and heck, I don’t want to buy the equipment and keep it in my apartment :)

Metrix Create: Space is an awesome place to anyone who’s in to doing innovative things with technology. Electronics, custom materials, software, you name it, you can probably find someone here doing something interesting with it.
Some things I’ve seen around the space:
— Laser cut Christmas trees? Check.
— Electronic flip-​boards to show when the next bus is coming? Check.
— Microcontroller powered light boards? Check.
— $ 1 coffee dispensing [don’t forget to insert a cup] robot? Double check.
The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable over a wide range of topics, most have advanced college or profession EE and/​or CS backgrounds, so they know just which capacitor you need for your circuit, and you can get it right there. Guess we don’t need a Radioshack on Capitol Hill anymore, do we?
In addition to the staff, there’s usually a good crowd of knowledgeable people there working on projects, so you’ll never be without a smart brain to pick.
You can use tools (hand-​tools, power-​tools, laser cutter, 3d printer, fully equipped and ventilated soldering room) for reasonable fees, or free (excluding laser & 3d printer) /​discounted if you sign up for a monthly membership.
The network here is top-​notch. No, really. Top-​notch. Before Metrix Create: Space, Metrix was around selling professional wireless working equipment all across the world. The space has a ⁵⁰⁄₁₀ connection to the net, Cisco 3500XL switch, Ubiquiti access points, and ¹⁰⁄₁₀₀ ethernet jacks around the desks if you feel the WiFi isn’t cutting it. You won’t have any problems looking up specs for your projects, browsing IPv6 enabled sites, or simply relaxing and being a laptop-​hobo after you’re done working on your projects here.

Metrix is seriously awesome and I’m not aware of anything else like it in the city. It’s part café (they have coffee and wifi until midnight 7 days a week, but it’s coffee that comes from a robot), part art gallery/​DIY production space. People who are into things like
, Make Magazine and ReadyMade will love this place.
Some of the things that Metrix visitors can use:
— Sewing machines and craft supplies
— 3D printing
— Laser cutting/​etching
— Sidecutters, screwdrivers, scissors, sergers, multimeters
— Soldering room
— Vending machine with odd things like a sound reactive wearable button kit, adapters & power supplies, jumper wire, and sun chips
— Workshops like «Introduction to Electronics» and «Using Transistors»

The only reason you haven’t been here is because you didn’t know about it. .\\c:_ has tubes, coffee, robots, and a chill atmosphere. Go.
You can spend as much or as little as you want; the vending machine has $ 1 candy and $ 400 laptops.

My new favorite hangout space on the hill! Complete with laser cutter, Makerbot (3d printer), cheap coffee, tool rental (including a serger and sewing machines), soldering room, and a vending machine stocked with better projects than a Radioshack. Large tables give you space to work on your projects. It’s way easier than working at home where my cats decide to walk all over any project I start.
You can get project help from others, or lend a hand yourself. They have memberships available if you want to save money off the drop in tool rates too.

They have a laser cutter and a MakerBot. And the geekiest vending machine in the city.
And they’ll let you use them.
The only think that could make this place cooler would be a robot to play go with.
