Othello Halal Market & Cafe

Another wonderful East African [Somalian] find in the Othello neighborhood, right across the street from Safeway, adjacent to the massive vacant land space.
It’s a neat, clean little corner store well lit with a variety of goods and packed into this space. Going off of the card, you’ve got: injera, sambusa, snacks, espresso, tea, groceries, produce (i.e., garlic, potatoes), poultry, meat, fish, clothes, bags, carpets, bedding, phone cards, boss revolution perfumes (o_​O) and tax services. If it’s anything like the other similar cafes, they usually cater to the Somalian community — which this neighborhood also has a lot of, in addition to the Vietnamese and Chinese as major area demographics.
I’ve had the tea (I feel like the line with «chai» is becoming blurred…) + milk twice (choice of milk/​water, I believe; besides, I like thicker) a sambusa (minced beef and veggies/​onions) and 2 local-​sourced items from Afrikando Banadir: chapati and something called ‘kackac’. According to the helpful label, both have [wheat] flour, sugar and water. The 4^th different ones are oil in chapati and eggs in the kackac. He was pleasantly conversative when I asked about the food made for them. I came home and the kackac is a nice simple snack; it may be better fresher/​warmer in the morning but still good. The chapati was ok; perhaps a bit tough; I also noticed the ziploc bag it was in was open for not sure how long… that was a bit dry and tough. Chapati is awesome when it is fresh or atleast not tough and dry — it’s my medium between a fluffy Indian naan and thin French crêpe = chapati to me. The sambusa is also quite tasty. Oh, and the morning guy asks if you want everything in your tea; he explains the addition of sugar, cinnamon and ginger. Nice! :)
The gentlemen here are friendly and can feel homey after you realize they’re sort of reserved and chill, at first. He said kackac is a common inter-​meal snack… well I accidently had a bit too much of that and chapati in one sitting so I had tummy aches the next morning. Oops!
If you feel slightly uncomfortable, just pop some conversation/​questions and you fall right into ease at places like this.

P. S. Sometimes here and Amin usually leave the tea bag in. May want a napkin to hold your cup as some fluid may run up and out the string outside, even though the lid is tight… «Why is my hand feel a bit wet?»
