The MV Skansonia

What a beautiful venue and the food is top notch. I was a little discouraged by the music and dancing not being visible from the tables on the other side but the nostalgia of the venue makes up for that. If you get a dj you may want to take a little extra attention to make sure the sound system reaches all sides of the boat as we were not able to hear the music very well from the eating area on the other side of the dance floor. I think it needed more speakers placed around better during our event.
The people are very nice and helpful during set up, etc… I would definitely consider having an event here!

So, summer is over and my fiancé and I went to the food tasting and cake tasting!
Food tasting was good but the only down fall is that they didn’t have all the options that they offer from the brochure. Also, there were a lot of couples there and I wish they would’ve had less people for the food tasting… by the time I got to the food it was cold and that was disappointing… They only served the most popular items… but other than that everything was great and same with staff.
Cake tasting was good too. They had a lot of different flavor and also served coffee.
They sure knows how to make all the couples feels extra special! :)

We got married on the Skansonia on ¹⁰⁄₉ and had a great wedding! The venue is absolutely gorgeous! The food and cake were delicious! Vicki and her team were amazing and helped make our day seamless. Strongly recommend this venue for your wedding or special event!

I hate it when businesses do not publish essential info on their website so I thought to put it here. Bear in mind that these prices will likely go out of date soon and were only informally communicated to me over the phone.
Max seats = 200.
For Peak period (July-​Sept?) weekend days, nights seem to fill up over a year out. Days seemed available. You rent a 5 hr period (1hr setup, 4 ceremony) so if eves are booked you can still do day noon-​5pm. $ 54.50 per person on Sat, $ 50 per on Sun. This includes light lunch. No discount if you don’t want food. Can’t bring your own.
For off-​peak, costs are $ 2500 + labor and rental. Possible to bring own food.
Based on this info, we are likely priced out. Looks like a very scenic venue tho.

Our facility rentals for the 2015 – 2017 season show case our off peak, semi peak, peak and seasonal package rates. These rates include a four hour event period with an hour prior to the event for set up. Additional time is also available for purchase. A 20% Service & Labor fee and WSST 9.6% will be added to the final bill.

Amazing venue. Fit the idea of affordable, outdoors, and on the water. Great staff, very willing to field concerns and questions. Highly recommended.

My husband and I were married on the Skansonia on July 24, and cannot recommend the Skansonia highly enough! We had a wonderful time, and are still hearing from guests how much they loved the venue and the food!
The Skansonia was recommended to us by a friend whose sister had been married there a few years ago. We were able to see the boat the next day at an open house, and were immediately in love with the ambiance and atmosphere on the Skansonia. I mean, how much more «Seattle» does it get than a retired ferry boat on Lake Union, overlooking the Seattle skyline?
We loved the fact that the Skansonia team works closely with a bakery, florist, and caterer, and while we could have used our own vendors, why re-​invent the wheel when you have such an excellent team already on board (no pun intended)? I’m always someone who wants a «Plan B,» and I loved the fact that they could move everything for the ceremony inside within 15 minutes in case the weather didn’t hold out. We had rain on the morning of our wedding, and with a quick email to Vicki on the Skansonia, she reassured me right away that we could make a game time decision to move things inside. It turns out we didn’t need to, but it made the day much more relaxing to know we wouldn’t be rained out!
Vicki and Mikayla were incredibly responsive to all of our emails, and never made it seem as though I was pestering them with questions (I really, really tried not to be a Bridezilla!). On the day of the wedding, Vicki was SO calm and reassuring, I was able to hand everything over to her and just enjoy the day! I never felt like I had to worry about anything — Vicki and Mikayla had it all taken care of. All we had to do was show up and have a wonderful time, which we did!
As I mentioned earlier, guests have been coming up to me for weeks, telling me what a fun time they had, how great the venue was, and how much they loved the food (including the cupcakes). We LOVED our time at the Skansonia, and can’t recommend them highly enough!

Outstanding! Probably one of the best holiday party venues I’ve ever attended.
Mid December we had our company party here and honestly I didn’t know what to expect. Every since I moved south I seldom visit Seattle anymore, let alone the University District. If your not familiar with Lake Union it is difficult to find this venue, I got lost for a good 10 minutes until I found the docks leading to the venue. Parking was a little scarce but luckily we were able to find street parking close by.
I was a little hesitant because I am not custom to riding on boats due to the fact that I get sea sick. This Ferry venue sits permanently docked on the water so there was no movement at all. I didn’t even notice I was on a ferry boat. This venue is often used for wedding so there is a touch of extravagance right when you enter.
On the lower deck, there is a gorgeous bar and a large open area which is used for socializing, dancing, or party activities. On the opposite side of the room, the buffet was tastefully decorated, with a spread of fine cheeses & crackers, salads, fresh breads, veggies and mouthwatering steaks that were to die for! Food was delicious, paired with your choice of complimentary red or white wine, satisfaction!
In the upper deck restrooms, two lounges where you can relax, enjoy your cocktails, take a nice stroll outside the boat to admire the breathtaking view of The city.
The staff was extremely friendly, service was great! Bartender was fast and had excellent choices of wines and beers.
If I ever plan to berries, I would definitely add this venue as one of my top choices. Highly recommend touring this venue to see first hand all they have to offer!

Fabulous Venue and Team!
My Husband and I were married on Nov. 8^th 2014. It was the perfect fall ceremony I could ask for and it was the only sunny day of that week. We had our rehearsal Thurs. night and were the next event so we were able to bring any props, alcohol, etc that night, which made Saturday setup simple… there was nothing for us to do except get dressed and show up!
During the year working with Jen and Kristine was easy, most the time i emailed and received response within the hour. The day of our wedding went smoothly as well. The food is phenomenal! We opted for the mini cheesecake bar through their sister café Lake Union Café… that was delicious!
James was amazing at our rehearsal and the. He really kept me calm and walked and talked us through everything. They really make it about their customers and do what they can to make it a memorable day. This venue came recommended to me from a co worker who was married aboard here years ago. The first step onto this venue and I was in love. Cost was also very favorable.

What a great location. I attended a Company Christmas party here. Coat check, bar and wonderful food. Service was excellent and did I mention the food? Plentiful and delicious. Parking was easy and the night time view of the city was amazing. I would highly recommend this space for a wedding or other large group event. While it’s a large space really consider flow with people. It’s easy to think you have plenty of room with chairs pushed in and no bodies on the ferry. It also gets very loud with talking and music playing in the background. Just things to consider but it’s a fun, different location that friends, family and guests will love. I’m sure day events produce amazing pictures.

My wife and I had our wedding on the Skansonia last night and it was amazing! With all the stress and planning that goes into a wedding the number one thing I think that a couple can ask for is that the wedding itself goes off without a hitch and that is exactly what happened with us. It truly was the most magical experience of our lives and we had a number of guests tell us that ours was the nicest wedding they had ever been to.
For obvious reasons the Skansonia’s main advantage is its location. Hard to beat a wedding which takes place on the deck of a boat with the Seattle skyline in the background. Our wedding took place at 7:20 at night and it was just beautiful outside. Dinner, toasts, dancing took place in the boat, but afterwards it was such a beautiful night that most guests stayed outside on the deck to enjoy the views as the Skansonia set up tables and chairs for everyone to sit on.
Jen was our first contact when we originally toured the Skansonia and she was absolutely awesome during the whole process. She is one of those really organized, take charge people that you can only dream of being in charge of the details of your wedding. During the wedding itself Jen was there for the ceremony, but James handled things for the most part and he was absolutely awesome. Very organized, calm and just all around nice guy. Again, the exact sort of person you would want at your wedding.
In regards to other details a couple might be interested in knowing, the food was amazing. A few months ago we went to a tasting event the Skansonia held so we could choose our meal options. The food was delicious then and just as good during the wedding itself. It was served buffet style, which everyone seemed to really like.
One thing I really appreciated is that right after the ceremony the Skansonia arranges it so that the bride and groom get to go upstairs and have some private time to themselves. By the time we got upstairs we had dinner plates ready and waiting for us. This was so nice as we were able to celebrate just being married and have some time to ourselves.
So all together I couldn’t possibly recommend this place highly enough. If you take the time to tour the Skansonia I think you will be sold on the first viewing. The Skansonia was the first on our list of possible wedding locations to tour and we never went to another place. In other words, it was love at first sight and that turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made.
In the end it was an absolutely amazing night. A top notch location and top notch staff make it everything you could possibly want for a wedding

My lovely bride and I were married there 4÷5÷14 and this spot and people are are absolutely wonderful! Jen and Kristin were excellent, organized and great to work with from start to end. They took care of every detail and many we likely didn’t know of. Flexible in the way we desired setup to be, timing was to the minute and took care of deliveries and vendors. The ferry was a hit with all our guests whether local or out of town, they loved it — cozy but comfortable with 115 people. Food… delicious, hot and fantastic display — everyone, everyone commented on great the food was — and we got the leftovers which were delicious the next day too! The lighting, atmosphere, old marine décor, staff, etc… made for a classic and cool vibe. Lovely and tasty cake from LUC, Sean the dj nailed it all night long and flowers were beautiful — all recommended by Skansonia and superb.
We can’t say enough and highly recommend this to couples looking for a memorable wedding venue. Price… can’t be beat — best value in town.

Just had our wedding at this place the other night, and it was AMAZING! Here are some things worth mentioning.
The food: They let you do a tasting before you select your entrees. We chose the chicken, smashed potatoes, quinoa salad, crab cakes appetizer, cheese cubes, sliced veggies, and more. Everyone really thought it was so good, especially the smashed potatoes. And since we only had 75 people, and the minimum you get charged for is 100, we got the appetizers included in our price. Nina was really awesome in making this happen.
The staff:
All the other staff members were awesome, too. From the wedding coordinator to the bartender to the extra help, they made sure everything we needed was taken care. My wife needed last minute bobby pins. BOOM, taken care of. We needed a sharpie for the guest book. BOOM, taken care of. They were very laid back and helpful, which really put us at ease.
The cake:
We got our cake thru Lake Union Café, their preferred vendor, and it was really delicious. They, too, let you do a tasting. They ask you to bring pictures in with you so they can get an idea on what you want your cake to look like. They do an excellent job. I highly recommend the pumpkin chi flavor! They also include the price in your final bill from the Skansonia, so you don’t have to pay a bunch of different people.
The view:
It was so great! It was cloudy on our wedding night (mid-​September), but it didn’t rain. And the sun was setting just as we had our ceremony, which turned the sky pink behind the Seattle skyline. Someone said, «It was very sexy.» It was. I obviously can’t put it into words enough that would fully describe how beautiful it was. But if you ever get a chance to be on the boat all lit up at dawn, go for it. It’s like a painting.
The tealights:
Yes, they cost like $ 75 to rent them but they were well worth it, I highly recommend them. They light up the tables really well and add to the mood tremendously. We also got the arch with flowers and Dann made them look stunning. We had all our bouquets and corsages done thru him as well, and I’ve never seen flowers quite like that before. Elegant.
Beer/​wine:
I took a previous commenter’s advice and got our alcohol thru Costco. I actually spent around $ 300 and got 48 bottles of wine (red and white), 14 bottles of champaign, and a keg that I had to get somewhere else. We had 50 guests and were able to drink for 4 hours on the boat (we did not purchase or really need the extra hour), which left us with about 30 bottles of wine and half a keg. For some reason we mostly drank champaign all night. We dropped the wine off the day before the wedding no problem, but you can’t do this with the keg since they have no refrigerator. You have to either bring your own ice or buy ice from them and they will keep the keg cold with it.
And I didn’t know this, but apparently in Washington you have to buy kegs well in advance. So don’t do like we did and buy your keg the day of! We spent too much time calling around, just looking for a keg on our wedding day, when we could have had it waiting for us already.

My wife and I got married on the Skansonia 5 years ago on 09/​05/​2008 (One of the best decisions in our lives). And yesterday was our actual 5 year anniversary date. And a few days before yesterday, I randomly called the Skansonia and a sweet lady by the name of Nina picked up the phone. Told her our situation and my wish to revisit the Skansonia with my family on our anniversary date as a surprise to my wife. Nina, without hesitation said that we are welcome to do so and she’ll even chill a bottle of Champaign on ice for us. Wow!
Fast forward to yesterday 09/​05, I teased by wife all day about how we are going to do something special, we are going to go somewhere special. To throw her off, I aimlessly drove all over downtown Seattle which was perfect because our baby needed to nap anyways. But as I started heading north, my wife was like «Are you going to Skansonia?» And I was like «No» with my face turning bright red. But I went the back roads and shot straight in between two parked cars and my wife couldn’t see the Skansonia to her right because of a big van. She was like «Where are we?» I said «The Skansonia!» Her reaction was a cute little smile…
Then I brought a suite case (Containing our wedding champagne glasses, champagne, camera, tripod, anniversary card, and gift). She’s like «Why do you have a suit case?» I was like «Don’t worry about it» and headed in. Then me and my family boarded the Skansonia and were greeted by Nina and Jen. Nina set up our sitting area with champagne while we walked around getting nostalgic and taking pictures. Halfway through it, we went upstairs to our sitting area for a anniversary champagne toast. And the whole experience was dizzyingly nostalgic and sentimental and it couldn’t have been a better thing to do on our 5 year anniversary. Thank you Nina, Jen, and Skansonia for making it special, once again!

My husband and I just got married at the Skansonia– the wedding and venue were wonderful! We had a blast working with the Skansonia staff from the start– Shauna and Jen were incredibly helpful and accommodating– from specific requests on linen colors, to setting up our customized decorations, to arranging as many pre wedding appts as we desired to make sure our wedding day was well-​organized and what we envisioned. They also coordinate with your vendors in advance to ensure a smooth day. On the day of, Jen created plates for us since we were so busy socializing with guests and enjoying our day. That was very much appreciated! The food was delicious, and you can bring your own alcohol on the boat which is a cost-​saver.
The venue is gorgeous– the dance floor is lit up with vintage lights after the sun sets, and guests loved taking pictures with the Seattle skyline (and space needle) as the backdrop.
The only critiques I have were the long lines for the buffet and somewhat limited bathroom capacity, but I think with a bit more structure (tables going to buffet one at a time) this can definitely help!
I would absolutely recommend this vintage ferry– a wonderful way to celebrate a very special day and give out of town guests a unique taste of Seattle.

My husband and I were married on the Skansonia July 2012, and we don’t have a single complaint. We loved the Skansonia as soon as we stepped afoot the boat. It is awesome that you can celebrate on Lake union. It is also a plus that the wedding can be indoors if by chance it rains. Both Shauna and Ellie were very helpful in preparing the décor and details. The wedding went very smooth without any hiccups. The food was very tasty, and every single person that we have talked to that were at our wedding have nothing but good things to say about it!
They also recommended vendors which we also loved!

I fell in love with the Skansonia the moment I first stepped onto it. I can’t say enough good things about this place. It is located on Lake Union with a beautiful view of Seattle and the water, We had an evening reception the evening of October 6, 2012. As we stepped onto the boat the sun had just set, all the tea lights were lit, our guests enjoyed cocktails on the bow and that was just the beginning of what turned into a perfect evening. I realize I sound like an annoying bride, but when everything turns out fantastic, it’s hard to not sound like a drooling sycophant over this place.
Ellie and Shauna did a fantastic job answering any question I had during the process. I gave Ellie my table frames, guest book and seating assignment chart and she made magic happen. These guys know what they are doing and it shows. If you want a venue that provides not only a beautiful atmosphere but also fantastic service, this is your place. I tend to be anxious and a worrier, meeting with Ellie the week of the wedding calmed any fear I had. They take care of everything, and make sure the night is as seamless as possible. The food was AMAZING and at the end of the night Ellie boxed up bride and groom doggie bags full of all of our food. (not going to lie, ate all that night)
Food and cake (also fantastic) come from their sister company Lake Union Café. They allow you to bring on your own alcohol which saves SO much money. We had about 100 people, bought all of our alcohol from Costco and spent about $ 500 (we actually bought too much). When you compare this to venues that charge $ 18 per head for alcohol, it’s not hard to see the savings.
Bottom line: gorgeous venue, wonderful experience working with Ellie and Shauna. We have gotten so many compliments on our beautiful wedding and it wouldn’t have happened without the Skansonia. Thanks guys!

We were married here August 26^th, and I am still dizzy with joy just thinking about that night. I hesitate to write this review, because I don’t want it to be over. At most wedding’s or large events, something is bound to go wrong. I AM fatalistic in that sense. However, I can say, because of Shauna’s patience, meticulousness, warmth and attention to detail– not only was the ceremony, celebration and food Perrrrfect– but just as importantly, the process of planning was smooth and stress free– and THAT is priceless. I have to mention, at the tasting– my very favorite item was the sweet potato wrapped Prawns. I opted not to have it as my Maid of Honor has a severe shellfish allergy. Even though it was 5 months later when we decided on our menu, Shauna did not forget my favorite item, and right after we signed our marriage certificate– she brought me and my new Husband a plate of the longed for Prawns… the fact that she could run so many weddings, and remember that details speaks volumes.
Planning a wedding is stressful, but planning it from across the country as we did is just plain askin’ for it. We planned this wedding via 1000+ emails… okay it may have been around 500– but let’s just say I had a LOT of questions. Every single correspondence was responded to in a timely, well thought out manner. I truly felt cared for. I was annoyed with my OWN constant inquiries– but never once did I feel like I wasn’t the most cared for bride that ever was. So, basically the customer service and planning is TRULY as good as it gets, it was because of this open correspondence that everything was so smooth. Then you have the venue itself– of why you’re considering the Skansonia as a location: It is on the water overlooking the Seattle Skyline, it is vintage, warm, the food was DELICIOUS, there are multiple hang outs– the Dance floor, the coffee station/​food area/​outside/upstairs…etc…so people have the option to roam and get different environments without feeling separated from the party. I will say, it is in an industrial part of Seattle, and that is the only reason I can think of why this venue is SO SO affordable. Did I mention you can buy your own alcohol?! That saves THOUSANDS. We had a 150+ person wedding, passed hor d’ourves, full dinner, open bar… stunning views and no one will ever imagine the price we paid. I know I’m pontificating, but see, once I write this review, it’s really over. There have been so many steps with Shauna from when we booked the venue nearly a year ago to the tasting to the wedding to now. Wedding’s are inherently stressful– events bring out the best and worst in people, but knowing your venue is SOLID and professional will make the experience worth it all. Shauna is truly a Saint, the Skansonia is gorgeous, the food is supreme (and we are food critics-​there are chefs who were blown away) and the prices make it actually all possible. We had a dream wedding.

When I heard where my friends had chosen to get married, this place was absolutely news to me. I figured it was something with a lot of funky charm to it. It turns out to be a really nice place with all the amenities – and enough quirk to it to be memorable. I can certainly see why they picked it.
It’s appropriate for a reasonably traditional ceremony, though obviously it’s a secular structure. I believe your officiant can be of any denomination, though, if you want a ceremony within a faith. They set up everything for the ceremony and reception to be familiar and welcoming for all ages, including older guests, so they can be comfortable. The bow (or «end #1,» as they call it in ferry boating) hosts the ceremony. You can see in the photos – this gives you a stunning view of downtown, the Needle, Queen Anne, and Lake Union. The sun goes down, the lights twinkle, the water glows. The staff breaks down the chairs and sets up a few tables after the ceremony.
There’s a posh upstairs with private spaces for changing and staging, and a staircase leading down to the bow for the wedding party and the happy couple to make an entrance. There’s a fan up there, and a head.
Downstairs, what used to be the car decks now serve as the bar, dance floor, and dining area. There’s gorgeous antique furniture lining the walls – hutches, sideboards, lowboys, creating the effect of a grand old mansion. The bartenders worked overtime at this particular reception, offering fully 25 different kegs from homebrewers and pro brewers in town. (The mazer himself poured from the Methuselah of orange blossom honey mead). This kind of flexibility with special requests speaks highly of them for sure.
The decking itself inside is gorgeous – battered old hardwood brought back to a high shine through, no doubt, countless hours of grueling labor done by somebody. There are roll-​up garage doors to protect the interior from the elements, or to create ventilation. That was the one thing about this place that could be seen as a demerit… the ventilation. It was hot and humid in Seattle last night, but it was particularly hot and humid inside the boat. Not even close to cutting a star, though, since it was a genuinely remarkably muggy day (Cliff Mass explained this at length on the radio yesterday morning).
Bottom line, this place is now a treasured memory for me, but really only applies to others if they’re looking for a wedding or banquet facility. In that case, speaking only as a wedding guest, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

We got married in late May at Skansonia and were very happy with our choice. Shauna was our point person and she is responsive, professional, warm, and diplomatic in working with couples. She also worked very well with our other service providers, who all noted how easy it was to work with her. We wanted something quirky, original, and reasonably priced and Skansonia was all of that and more. Although the food is not stellar, it’s also not bad… it’s good enough, especially given the price that you pay. The service on the big night was also amazing. Everyone was helpful and the night ran very smoothly. The staff were so sweet at the end of the night; they packed us some food and cake, knowing that we likely did not have a lot to eat and would get hungry later on. They were right!
Some pros/​cons/​tips:
Pros:
–You can be outside if the weeather is nice and inside if it’s raining
–Food is good
–Staff is competent and efficient
–Great view! Space needle, downtown… sailboats, kayakers… you got it all!
–Lots of parking in the evening
–You can bring your own alcohol and they don’t charge you a corkage fee
–Great sound system you can just plug your ipod or other music device into for music
–Reasonably priced
Cons:
–You can’t use open flames anywhere
–It can get pretty warm on a hot day
–The shape is a little long so some guests feel quite distant from others
–You have to get more items of food in order to get their dinner plates and linens
–They have no high chairs or booster seats
–Upper level is not wheelchair accessible
–The walkway to the boat is not the most attractive as there are a lot of rusted old boats/​barges beside the Skansonia
Other tips:
–Have your service folks talk to and coordinate with Shauna
–Check with everyone about your sound system needs and get a sense from Shauna what the limitations of Skansonia are
–Be prepared to pay for an extra hour or two as time passes by quickly!

How can such a wonderfully romantic wedding venue be tucked away next to Ivar’s Salmon House and a bunch of random little boats? I attended a friend’s wedding here yesterday evening and although it was October, the weather was perfection and the MV Skansonia has an indoor/​outdoor portion ready for just about anything (except maybe typhoons).
The ceremony portion was held at the bow of the boat and the seating room is rather limited but perfect for more intimate weddings. There’s a dining area as well as a dance floor to boogie down to Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys (okay, that was closer to the end of the evening). The staff was courteous, the wine glasses were never empty, the buffet was fresh and in the end, it all came down to ambiance.
