Your Knife Sharpening Guy

Andrew came and sharpened our knives in house last year. We are looking forward to having him come back again soon.
Our knives were sharpened to a level I didn’t think was possible. Andrew was very pleasant to talk to and educated me on the in’s and out’s of knives sharpening.
Really enjoyed our visit with him and would recommend him to anyone looking for excellent service.

Five weeks ago yesterday I was at the Columbia City Farmers Market and gave Andrew (the knife sharpening guy) my machete to sharpen, plus a $ 20 bill (bad idea). I thought he was going to do it that afternoon. When I returned 90 minutes later, he said I could pick it up the following week. So, seven days later when I showed up at his booth, he says he forgot to do it, left it in his trunk, didn’t have it with him, and I could pick it up the following week. Big surprise — he didn’t show up at all at the Columbia City Market that following Wednesday. I went to the folks at the Market booth to report this, and they said he had been kicked out of the Market (that means ALL Seattle farmers markets) a while ago due to poor attendance. So now he sets up his booth right outside of the official market boundaries and pretends he’s affiliated with them. Since that time, he has answered his phone once (out of my 15 – 20 calls), and said he would call me back that night to let me know where I could pick up my machete. Big surprise — he didn’t call. I am really easy going, and have never posted a bad review for anyone, but this guy is DEFINITELY an unreliable and frustrating person to do business with. Save yourself the hassle — find someone else.

I’m not a big Unilocal person as I tend to think it can be a platform for idiots but man this wasn’t good! Took our knives to be sharpened — Yikes! They came back worse than they wen t and to the point where our bread knife had the serrations ground off on one side. Contacted the people and they pretty much couldn’t care less. Stay away unless you like disappointment.

Used Andrew twice now. Great home service too.

I brought my well-​loved but dull Wusthof and Shun knives to the U District Farmers Market to get them all sharpened. It took Andrew about two hours to turn it around for me to bring them home, which was great for allowing me to run my errands on the Ave. I cooked up a storm soon after with my knives and am happy to report that they are as sharp as they were the day I bought them. He’s super friendly too!

Brought in a chef’s knife and a planer blade on Saturday to the U. District Market. It was promised to be ready at 2– 4 hours after I brought it in. Then I get a call at 1:30 saying they were not ready– how about next Tuesday? Finally get it back Tuesday evening late. Needless to say, when I finally get my blades back, I will not be using this service again.

Brought my 6 knives to Andrew at the Ballard Farmers Market. He did my main one while I shopped at the market, and we agreed on the other 5 two days later. He delivered them to my home as promised and on time.
Great communication throughout, and nice sharp knives for my food chopping pleasure! Thanks Andrew!
Oh and very reasonable prices: Ranged from $ 6 to $ 12 per knife depending on the knife and what was needed. Totally worth it!

Andrew did a superb job of sharpening my knives. They are, literally, sharper than new. One caveat: this guy is popular and it may take a day or two for him to finish the job. He was swamped at last Saturday’s Magnolia Farmers Market. He’ll personally deliver your knives to your home when they’re ready.

Uncooperative and Peevish! I took my knife in to get sharpened today; A beautiful hand-​hammered vintage Chinese cleaver. It has some problems with the blade, but I like the knife as it is and use it like that. I tried to get Mr Knife Sharpening Guy to simply sharpen it, but not ruin its vintage character by over-​repairing the blade. I experienced difficulty getting him to listen to what I needed him to do. With further back-​and-​forth, I thought I finally seemed able to make him understand. He agreed to simply sharpen it, which is all I wanted (seemed simple enough, right?). So I went on walkabout as requested for 20 minutes waiting for him to do my knife. When I got back he hadn’t done my knife at all, but said he was «afraid he couldn’t do it to my satisfaction». Wha? All I wanted was for him to sharpen it! So for anyone out there with a truly special knife that you have special instructions on… avoid this uncooperative fellow! He has poor customer service ethics and poor communication skills. He’s also peevish and his ego apparently easily ruffled. I was polite but firm in what I wanted, but I get the impression he didn’t like that. This kid needs to get in another line of work if he isn’t interested in doing as his customer requires on their own knife, particularly when it’s something old and special. But oh well. I may have wasted 20 minutes walking around in the rain and cold waiting for him to do what I asked him to (to no avail), but at least I didn’t have to pay $ 8 – 15 for him to ruin my vintage knife. I guess if you have an everyday stainless steel kitchen knife, then he’s your man, but if you have anything special, go to someone more mature who is actually willing to listen to what his paying customer needs.

I’m a fan. Sharp knives make all the difference when cooking. Andrew does a fine job and is handily located at the U District and Ballard farmers’ markets (and others, I believe). I’ve used him twice now, once on a single knife and once for my friends’ entire set. Both times the knives came out great, and the price was right. I used to drive to Kirkland for my knife sharpening — no more.
An earlier reviewer notes being frustrated that Andrew wouldn’t sharpen his knife because he was concerned he couldn’t do it to the customer’s satisfaction. I personally think that’s a GOOD trait. I appreciate folks who ultimately decide to turn down work if they’re not 100% confident the customer will be happy.

Andrew took care of all the knives I’d been neglecting. He’s efficient and does a great job. I also had him do the neighbors push mower we’ve been borrowing. I hope to be able to sharpen my own someday. Until then I’ll call Andrew.

This guy’s awesome! Need a knife sharpened? Worried about having to wrap up and cart all your knives in a box to … somewhere else? NEVER FEAR. Andrew shows up, sets up shop, sharpens, cleans up — and the cost is super reasonable. Oh and you’ll find out how to take care of your knives, how to get the most out of the sharpening + polish, and even the brand of knives Andrew recommends (Forschner!). I’m callin’ this guy from now on!

Andrew is great at what he does hands down! I would refer his services to anyone. In fact I let him leave his flyers in my office so I can give them to all of my clients. If you need your knives or garden tools sharpened you need to call this guy. You won’t be disappointed!

just had the best customer service experience of my life, possibly. andrew came to my house, did an AMAZING job on my knives, yard tools and lawn mower blade, was super friendly and fun to chat with, and charged very reasonably. plus, he gave me lots of info on how to care for my knives in the future, how to properly hone them, etc.

I needed my 2 year old reel lawn mower sharpened. My wife found this Unilocal page and we decided to try it. I was a bit skeptical about the «Front porch service», but Andrew was professional and expedient. He was able to come over and do the work the same day I called. Plus it was done for a fraction of what other services were charging. I now have a perfectly cutting lawn mower for another 2 years.

I met Andrew when he knocked on my door. «Need any knives sharpened?» I was a bit taken a back but asked him some questions about how he does them and decided to give him a couple so I could evaluate his work. At $ 3 per knife it was worth it. His work is flawless and I ended up giving him all of my knives to sharped. 15 total. After a check of his work I trusted him to do my Kramer knives which had only been sharpened by Bob. The look on his face when he saw the first Kramer said it all: The man knows his knives. He kept the edge angles correct and i definitely would have him do my knives anytime.

Andrew came highly recommended by many of my neighbors. I needed an entire butcher block of knives sharpened and he returned my call within an hour, and was at my door the next day. He was polite, professional and did an awesome job with my knives. They hadn’t been sharpened ever, and by the time he finished, they were sharper than they were originally!
Not only did he come to my door and sharpened these knives on my front porch, his prices were extremely reasonable. He charges about $ 3 per knife, but also does lawn mower blades, saws, axes, and other things. He also took the extra time to talk about caring for these knives properly, and even recommended an awesome restaurant supply store for cutting boards (see my review on Dick’s Restaurant Supply).
Although he started out going door to door, I’m sure he will quickly build a loyal customer base. I’d highly recommend him!
