History

Established in 1947.

In 1939 when Steve Hale, Jr. was a student at Georgia Tech, he visited Vero Beach, Florida during a Spring break. While exploring this beautiful little town for the first time, he met an elderly man who opened up a whole new world for him. This person, because of his poor health, had moved south from New Jersey to Vero Beach and started his own mail order fruit shipping business. Proudly showing Steve around his small packinghouse, he gave Steve a sample of his fresh, just picked, tree-​ripened fruit. Steve had never tasted oranges and grapefruit so sweet and juicy. Before leaving to go back to school, he found out that Vero Beach was located in the very heart of the Indian River citrus belt, even then known for growing the best tasting oranges and grapefruit.

I grew up in citrus groves and my lifelong passion is pursuing and sharing the highest quality citrus. My goal in every package is to deliver something extraordinary, something far superior in taste and freshness: something truly worthy of a gift.

We pick all fruit after you place your order so it is as fresh as possible and that means depending on fruit ripeness, weather, etc. our picking and shipping schedule can change; we do our best to manage it and still meet customer expectations.

Of the roughly 600,000 packages per year we ship, a high ninety percent of our packages arrive without any issue. We would never ship rotten fruit and in fact 99% our fruit is so fresh it is only in our packinghouse for a few hours before it is packed and put on a refrigerated truck and out for delivery. If something happens with our carrier during shipping and the fruit arrives rotten/​damaged/​moldy or otherwise doesn’t meet expectations, we replace the package or credit the customer’s account.
