Make Magazine

Make is a charming, little DIY nut book that offers all sorts of fascinating articles and how-​to project details for constructing just about anything.
The last issue I got was stuffed with instructions for building your own robots, Geiger counters, blood pressure monitors, transilluminators, brain scanners, hover crafts constructed from old shop vacs, wrist-​mounted range finders, LED wearable art heart monitors, Nerf guns, making your own soap, and sewing a cozy kimono plus articles on how to play video games with electrodes in your arm muscles and doing your own kinetic hacks, and kits for making your own little feats of engineering.
The magazine is printed on a higher paper stock. It’s 176 pages long with very few ads compared with other publications. The writing quality edges more on technical.
At $ 14.99, this is the periodical I read on a semi-​regular basis with the steepest cover price. I was fortunate enough to grab a $ 10 year-​long subscription (four issues) at last year’s Bay Area Maker Faire.
And speaking of the Maker Faires, what I love most about Make is that they hold their own big events around the country (totally one-​upping the now defunct Wizard, in my opinion). Even now they’re hosting one-​day science fairs and mini-​festivals to try and boost interest — not just in the magazine, but in science, engineering, crafting, and so on.
They’re providing fuel to your mental fire, igniting new possibilities and ideas.

I picked up the first issue of Make Magazine in the airport when I was looking for something to read on a business trip and have more or less been a fan ever since. Attended every Californa Maker Faire so far except 2009. Make is fantastic.

OK, so I’m a little jealous that I didn’t think to review this since I’ve been reading MAKE ever since it came out a few years ago. I’ve also been dying to go to Maker Faire one of these times. It’s best described as a festival of Do-​It-​Yourself attractions of all stripes. I’m honestly surprised SF Unilocal hasn’t reviewed this yet, must be one of those niches that doesn’t intersect. I’m gunning for you Jennifer B.

Every Christmas I renew my husband’s Make sub. They go back a handful of years. He hasn’t blown up the house, nor rendered any of the appliances useless.
But there was this robot mouse. Critter began as a computer mouse, then transformed into a machine that navigated around, changed directions when it encountered obstacles. Little Roomba-​type fucker. Did nothing but motivate the cat.
We still do laundry and clean floors manually, but I’m giving this pub an optimistic five stars, because we’re kind of young still and anything’s possible. Plus, it makes the man grin, which is all that really matters.
