Welcome to the Rose and Thorn, the backyard garden of your dreams — not fancy, but certainly fun and full of whimsy. Our country retail garden shop and its gardens offer a magical sanctuary in a park-​like setting, one that is pesticide free and friendly for people and critters alike.



The garden salvage art adds a playful touch to the bird and sitting garden, while maintaining an unruliness of «organized chaos» and shelter for wildlife. The garden shop is dripping with wind chimes and ceramics, and when you enter the indoor shop, you’re sure to find a treasure or two amongst the delectable unique gift items.

We encourage you to picnic on the property amongst bird houses, benches galore, roses and unique treasures in every corner. Children are especially invited to meet our friendly tiny goats and exotic chickens!

History

Established in 2001.

Carole Coler-​Dark, the owner of the Rose and Thorn is the magic behind the beautiful gift shop and gardens. She opened the shop in 2001 and everyone who visits is treated like family. «What I wanted to create was a happy place» says Carole, and she’s done just that by creating a beautiful safe haven filled with flowers, animals, unique, whimsical gifts, and of course her energizing and uplifting personality. «We all have roses in life and we all have thorns. I have people come in and tell me ‘When we feel gloomy, this is where we come to feel good.’»

Cute place. But seems like they buy things from other local shops and raise the price??? Saw items from a local hardware store they listed for like 7 $ and at the hardware store those items were only a dollar…
Not sure why it seems small local shops just buy things and more than double the price…? This place is a rip off

Pack your picnic basket and stop here along your route amongst the eclectic tables and chairs as the roosters sing to you.
This is a great place to stop for a simple picnic with the kids. The hens and roosters are running around which are sure to be entertainment for the kids. Don’t forget to pick up some fresh eggs before you leave along with checking out the store which is filled with unique gifts, jewelry and gift cards.
Don’t let the cluttered appearance from the street fool you. The store is organized and the bathroom is clean.

I live down the street and can’t figure this place out. The hours are strange, as are the items for sale. The amazing part is the owner’s chickens and her artistic, delightful coops. The products inside are limited, eclectic, and a little overpriced. If you want a funky, but sweet little shop to wander about, this would be it. If you need to get some serious shopping for gifts, would suggest downtown Sebastopol.

I LOOOOOVVVVE Rose & Thorn. It’s like a little bit of heaven on the side of the highway. They’ve got the cutest tiny little chickens, some that look like they’re wearing pants and others with crazy colored mohawks.
But the pygmy goats are my absolute favorite! They have a cool little house, a big straw yard with play structures and they all come by intermittently to say hello. I love their little goat beards.
Oh, did I mention the gorgeous consignment boutique? A great ecclectic mix of all sorts of fun goodies. The owner is super-​friendly and loves local artists. When I grow up, I want to have a store just like this lady.

You have to stop here as you drive to Seabastopol. There’s a cute mini farm with goats and chickens, and an adorable garden and home store that is sure to relax you by the time you leave. We like to pick up a few plants, painted pots, or something to take home and remind us of the lovely time we had there.

Okay, this store is a must go to-​every time I make a trip to Sebastopol, and on my way to Bodega Bay. I love the fact that they are not just a wonderful store, owned by the lovely and friendly Carol, but that they have very whimsical grounds you can picnic on, precious goats you can pet, and every species of chicken under the sun to marvel at!
I never fail to find something I want at The Rose and Thorn, either for myself or for a gift. They have such a wide range of things to choose from-​candles, jewelry, art, and the list goes on… My best friend bought a watch from a line he collects (and was simply thrilled with the price), and I found, among other things, a great Paris themed gift for a good client of mine.
They also have fun items that are just what you need for the garden, and last year I found the perfect tortoise statue for a friend of mine that has tortoises. I really want my own chickens and Carol has the most amazing chicken coop for sale! Want it!!!
Make this a stop on your trip if you’re in the area. You won’t be disappointed! Adore you Carol! Keep up the good work-you’re not just a great gal, with a fab store, you’re a destination!!!

I stopped in for the first time pre-​mothers day. I have been driving past for countless years and decided to stop. What a wonderful place. Carol showed me around and a short time later i had multiple gift ideas. For sure will be stopping in again and again.

There is a saying: «people will forget what you said, and people will forget what you do… but they will never forget how you made them feel»…and Rose & Thorn ALWAYS makes you feel good. Upbeat music playing while you browse and, more importantly, genuinely warm employees and/​or owner on site. Plus super cute goats and chickens to go hang out with before or after you shop. The only negative: be careful pulling out onto Bodega Hwy… tricky corner! But totally worth stopping by.

Carol, the proprietor is an extremely warm and generous lady, and her store is incredibly unique. Carol has local art and great one of a kind type items at a great price… Sales were fantastic and just browsing is a treat… While your there pick up some organic free range chicken eggs, and stroll through the orchard and enjoy one of Sebastopol’s great country shops!

SUCH A COOL PLACE! Carol has 5 goats and about 50 chickens, and I always have a great time wandering around her property watching all the animals doing their thing. The store is full of cool stuff; the work of local artists, jewelry, kitchen stuff, specialty foods (jams, mustards, honeys), greeting cards, candles… a really eclectic collection of gifts for anybody. This is definitely the place to go if you need a last-​minute gift. She also has tons and tons of garden stuff, including a great selection of wind chimes. If you’re in Sonoma County, you have to stop by the Rose and Thorn.

I LOVE this place. I just want to set up camp and live here. It is whimsical and beautiful and just down right perfect. The shop is over cluttered with all kinds of garden knick knacks that you didn’t even know you needed before you entered.
They have a few live animals on sight along with a beautiful garden to admire. The offerings in the store a reflection of the owner’s personality in their own garden. The place takes you away to somewhere not just off the freeway but miles away and lost in time.
If you are heading out to Bodega, stop by. It is worth a gander and will give you a few chuckles too.

This is the most adorable home and garden shop along Highway 12 West. They have really neat yard art/​signage, pots, and a few plants, too.
They have fantastic, unique gifts and knick knacks for your home and garden, cards, cds, baby gifts, and some wall art. The property itself, true to Sonoma, is vibrant, lushly green, beautiful, and homey. John and Carole, the owners, are some of the nicest and friendliest people around.
They have tons of chickens, little baby chicks, and a few pygmy goats out in the lovely gardens complete with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. They sell fresh eggs from the chickens, but I do believe there’s a wait list because the eggs are so popular with all the locals.
