On good Friday a co-worker and I decided to go to the local fish fry occurring in Sharpsburg at the Volunteer Fire Department. I offered to go pick it up, it’s nice to get out of the office;) Well it was a complete mad house when I got there. The volunteers had made a makeshift kitchen in the middle of the fire hall equipped with cardboard walls. They were working in an assembly line. I was a little confused walking in as to where to go to order. I walked past the card table where one is to place their order not noticing that that’s where the magic starts. I placed our order, we each got the fish dinner. It came with a rather large piece of fried cod, creamy coleslaw, French fries, and a bun if in case you want to build the sandwich. The wait was about 15 – 20 minutes. I wish we would have called ahead because the place stunk so bad like fried food, my hair and clothes reeked when I left. I felt like I needed a shower ASAP. So in the future I would definitely call ahead. There was an area where people could eat in the fire hall. There were about 4 to 5 Sharpsburg’s police officers in there. I take it during the fish fry the city is left unprotected! Once my ticket was called I grabbed my food, a bunch of extra cocktail sauces and tarter sauce and took off for the office. The food was really good, minus the fries. I am not the biggest regular fry eater anyway and these were entirely bland in desperate need of salt. I gave them to my co-worker and it worked out, nothing went to waste and I didn’t add any unnecessary calories… The fish was really good. Nice and light breading, fried perfectly. I cut it in half and took the other half home. The slaw had a little too much mayo in it, so it was incredibly rich. Couldn’t eat much of that, but I did put some on my fish because I like slaw on my sammies… Hey look where I’m from??? So it was a nice fish sandwich, but the sides could use a little help, but it’s always nice to support the local fire department while getting a tasty lunch in exchange.
