Mormor began in 2011 as a small studio where owner Carrie Keefe could devote her time to making handbags and other sewn goods. Shortly after, a small retail space became available. Carrie and her husband Marc decided to open a studio with small gift shop attached. Starting with only 7 artists the studio was accessible by a long staircase, «up the stairs and to the right». In 2012 Mormor moved to the bottom floor riverside location that the shop is currently in. It is a showcase to over 30 local artists; works ranging from original paintings, photography, handmade soap, jewelry, pottery, children’s clothing, women’s handmade clothing and so much more.
There is something for everyone, whether you can spend $ 4 on a fun handmade birthday card or an original watercolor painting worth hundreds of dollars. «We feel that art should be accesible to everyone. History
Established in 2011.
Mormor began as a small studio space with a small collection of homemade goods for sale, up-the-stairs-and-to-the-right, on Bridge Street in Shelburne Falls, MA. After an amazingly successful holiday season, the shop moved and more than tripled it size, carrying a collection of handcrafted goods from over 30 artisans.
Mormor’s currently location overlooks the Deerfield River and is only steps away from the historic Glacial Pot holes.
Meet the Business Owner
Carrie K.
Business Owner
Mormor in swedish means «mother’s mother». This shop itself was inspired by the two most important women in her life: her mother and her grandmother.
Carrie is the designer behind the Margaret and Ellen brand of handbags and sewn goods carried in the shop, which helped inspire the store’s contents of homemade goods.
Her mother, who’s middle name is Ellen, taught Carrie, who’s middle name is Margaret, everything she knew about sewing. Sewing has always been a part of her life especially having grown up wearing clothes her mother had sewn for her. However, creating and sewing handbags was something she discovered on her own. Thus creating a unique brand out of pure love and appreciation.
10 years ago Carrie hand-stitched her first handbag, which she still proudly owns today. Her passion, over almost everything is sewing, especially on vintage sewing machines, which tend to remind her of her grandmother.
