Description

Specialties

Susanna Wesley School has created a new educational vision. This vision is influenced by the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.

Core Values of the Reggio Emilia approach:

The arts are used to develop creativity, thought and expression.

By honoring individual learning styles children are encouraged to become self-motivated learners, which promote increased brain development and strength comprehension skills.

Each child is seen as competent, curious and creative. Our philosophy encourages a healthy self-esteem and the social awareness skills that will help children to experience success in life.

The learning environment is the «third teacher.» Classroom designs are intentionally arranged to stimulate curiosity, exploration and self-directed learning.

Collaboration between children, parents, teachers and the community teaches a comprehensive approach to learning.

History

Established in 1966.

September 2010 marks Susanna Wesley School’s 44th year of providing an enriching early childhood experience for children. The nursery school was first organized in the parsonage of the Huntington United Methodist Church with an enrollment of eight children. After the church was built on Walnut Tree Hill Road, the nursery school was transferred to it’s present location and has remained there until the present.

Today the school provides classes for three year olds, four year olds, pre kindergarten and KClub children. The enrollment is 150 with a professional staff of twenty.

I am the Director of Susanna Wesley School and have been in the Early Childhood Field for over twenty years. I’m an approved CT Charts-A-Course Trainer providing CDA (Child Development Associate) training for preschool teachers. I’m the Co-Chair of the Early Care Connecting Committee to the Shelton School Readiness Council. My Co-Chair and I created Roundtable discussions allowing dialogue between early childhood professionals, the school system and parents. The mission of the Shelton Readiness Council is to provide each child a smooth transition into Kindergarten.
