Specialties

The 1858 Townhouse provides a flexible location that lends itself to multiple uses in a unique setting. Whether you envision a festive, casual celebration or a more formal, elegant affair, an off-site meeting, a cocktail party — or other events — The 1858 Townhouse offers small, medium, and large conference spaces in a beautiful, historic venue that can be transformed to help bring your ideas to life. The Great Hall has a natural wood floor — perfect for dancing — and a raised platform where the guest of honor has the opportunity to be feted and honored. On the 1st floor the hand-stenciled School and Conference Rooms are ideal for wedding ceremonies, cocktail receptions and intimate events. A handsome stairway with a Victorian balustrade leads to an inviting foyer and the spacious Great Hall with its ceiling soaring sixteen feet above.

History

Established in 1858.

Designed by Elbridge C. Boyden, the architect of the Worcester’s Mechanics Hall, the Town had specified, «an edifice not so spacious & costly as some of our neighbors but one that in some good degree comports with the intelligence and taste of the age in which we live.»

When finished in 1858, the building was found to be well suited for many purposes: it housed the Town’s high school, the Town library, Town meetings, Board of Selectmen and other Town offices along with various charitable and cultural organizations.

At a Special Town Meeting held on January 17, 1983, a report by the Municipal Study Committee recommended leasing the 1858 Town House to a non-profit organization for renovation and use. This was accepted. In 1985, The Sherborn Community Center Foundation Inc. was formed.

In 1993, the restoration of the building won the Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation Award. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the U. S.

Our Function Consultants are paid professionals who provide event planning and assistance, including floorplan layout, caterer selection and coordination, set up, and any last-minute emergencies.

As background, in August, 1985 a group of dedicated, community-driven citizens got together and developed a plan to convert Sherborn’s Old Town Hall into a community center.

From this plan was formed The Sherborn Community Center Foundation, Inc. A non-profit, 501©(3) organization whose sole purpose was to raise funds to restore and maintain this historic structure.

Maintaining, scheduling and operating the 1858 Townhouse is conducted by a cadre of volunteers who are dedicated to the preservation of this unique asset of the Town of Sherborn.
