History

Established in 1985.

People thought we were crazy to open a Light Bulbs only store back in 1985, and maybe we were. Everyone compared us to the Saturday Night Live skit the «Scotch Tape Store» and though that was very funny and unusual. We humbly agreed but we saw the demand in the market place for a one stop shop for all types of light bulbs. Fortunately, we were right and today we have three stores including the original location still in Santa Monica. We carry the largest section of colored and decorative bulbs in Los Angeles. Party and Event planners love our giant selection of battery operated string and specialty lights. We maintain our highly knowledgeable sales staff year after year to serve best.

We bought new light fixtures that were casting problematic shadows. I brought in a photo and John suggested a potential fix. And it worked! I was so happy and grateful. They don’t refund, exchange or store credit only but great, a store full of actual light bulb experts.

The only thing «unlimited» about this place is the contempt they show for anyone who walks through the door, so let’s review Standard Procedure For Not Acting Like A Jerk (AKA, Human Interaction, 101):
1. Return your customer’s salutation– if you want to be dour and silent, fine, but at least acknowledge their presence. Especially if you and your fellow Clerk behind the counter are doing absolutely nothing.
2. When asked for a specific item, such as a lamp harp, which is a key part of 80% of the lamps sold today, don’t look at the customer like he asked you for something exotic and hard to find, like a Left Handed Crescent Wrench.
3. Above all, DO NOT LIE and say you don’t have something that I can see on display in one of the aisles. I noticed the item requested on my way out, but I wasn’t going to put a single penny in the coffers of such a contemptible business.
You need a specialty bulb, have at it. But, now that Home Depot and Lowe’s have rivaled Starbuck’s in their citywide saturation levels, you can probably find what you need at a Big Box nearby, so don’t waste your time here. I can’t imagine this place being here for long, what with such lousy service and attitude. And that block could really use another Starbuck’s…

They got lots of light bulbs and fixtures. I found my S11 light bulb asap. I don’t where you park, so I usually park on the street and feed the meter. I did get get assistance right away and that is always cool. If you can’t find a particular light bulb at Home Depot or OSH defiantly try this place out.

They would have gotten a better rating, if not for the fact that their el wire plugs do not fit properly into the sound reactive battery packs they sell separately to be used with said el wire. Meaning we now have to solder on a different piece ourselves, or would have had to pay like $ 25 extra for them to do it.
I asked for a discount to make up for having to do all this extra work (well, my bf has to), but the boss man refused.
You’d think that the manager/​owner would want to be generous with a customer who is buying $ 170 of el wire and accessories, who would probably come back and spend hundreds more in the future, but I guess customer retention was less important to him than making an extra $ 20 one time.
Alex was very helpful and patient as we spent a long time looking into different options for a costume.

The coolest place ever for lights! I needed an odd size flourescent bulb for a vintage piece of equipment and they had it! Discovered lights I had no Idea ever existed. The staff is very helpful and I bought a Jesus Flashlight too

My banker’s lamp (one of those things with the green glass shade and a pull chain) needed a new pull chain assembly installed. Instead of charging me for the work and part, they showed me how to do it myself, which was easy. The part cost me $ 3.65. I also bought a 25-​watt bulb for about $ 2.00. All in all, an experience which could have cost me either a new banker’s lamp or professional help, turned out great. Nice staff, lots of neat lighting stuff at reasonable prices. Parking in the back. Recommend.

Price gouging on Christmas lights. 39 $ for a single 25 string of g30 lights! On line on14 $ I felt like I got had. I showed he sales person the online price on my iPhone he said «sorry about that sir» in a very «you’re wasting my time» voice

This place is a rip off, I paid $ 40 (half that price anywhere else) for a string of bulb lights and 3 of the bulbs didn’t work from the start. Within the first week the entire light string stopped working. The dudes at the store knew they were ripping me off as one whispered «easy money» no another while I was paying but I was in too much of a rush at the time so I had to buy it anyway. Paying that much money is one thing but they didn’t even give me a working product. Absolutely would not recommend, go to OSH or Home Depot don’t deal with these small time crooks.

Fantastic store… so many options.
The employees are courteous and knowledgeable and have a great sense of humor. No pressure to buy.
They will test bulbs or any of the devices if you want.
Parking is metered on the street, and they have a lot in the back.
Highly recommended for designers, artists or anyone looking to find the «hard to find» bulb!

This place is totally awesome! Every time I leave I am convinced to buy something that I feel I want and like. I’m the kind of guy who wishes he could have all the lights in there! Goodness, I just want to feel my bedroom up with all kinds of lights. They have all the cool stuff. I have even been there just to check things out and just hope that one day I can get this or get that! If you are passing by, just go look inside and see all the cool light stuff they have! I’m the brightest bulb but I know they make me feel brighter there! =D

This place was super helpful, had what I was looking for and answered all my questions.
I went in looking for EL lights (a long wire that glows like a neon light people use to put on clothing, wrap around body, etc.). This stuff is hard to come by and online most people say the only option is to buy online, but they have it in different lengths and thicknesses!
I did not know what color I wanted so the gentlemen who helped me contacted their other location (via skype right there on the check out counter, which was super cool and super easy) and offered to have whatever thing I wanted at this location by tomorrow morning! Wanting to see how these things glowed in the dark, one man took me to a dark spot of the store and allowed me to turn on a few different colors.
Super helpful and a wonderful place to buy anything lights!!! Party supplies, house supplies, costumes, you name it.

I had a fantastic customer service experience recently with Light Bulbs Unlimited, specifically with a sales rep who helped me out… Louis! Anyone who contacts Light Bulbs Unlimited or visits the store, should ask for Louis! He is the best!
I work in the Film & Television industry, which as many people know, involves making a lot of impossible things happen for very impatient people! I had an emergency, last minute request for something that was needed immediately on set. I called around to several light bulb stores and eventually got this one and was lucky enough to be talking to Louis. He not only took care of my request, but he was quick, efficient, followed through, and was super helpful throughout the whole process. He saved me… and made it easy (which is unheard of)! I just wish all sales reps I spoke to were like Louis. He deserves a raise!

I had ordered some mini bulbs used in a poster and only found them there a few years ago, and just ran out. I remember how rude they were with me the last time, but figured I would bite the bullet and order more. Now the bulbs were 2.50 each !! NO WAY !!! I did a little research on line and found the same bulb .83 cents each. I ordered 43 of them for 35.00 and picked em up in Santa Monica the next day… YEAAAAAA
You might want to go on line to Master Dist. and see if they have your special bulbs and save a bundle, and not put up with the attitude you get at light bulbs unlimited. They will also ship via UPS if you so choose.
