Worst haircut/​color ever. I went here for the first time a few months ago, but I have not been able to wear my hair down since then its been in an ugly bun hoping it grows out asap.
I came in with very long hair and baylage high lights wanting to TRIM, and add layers that BLENDED into my hair, and add more of the lightest color on top.
The owner John was who I saw and he instead cut off my hair way too short than what I wanted, added choppy layers that are so awful I want to die. He also cut off the lightest color that i liked so much and did not add the right color in. He also allowed me to leave without fixing the color since he cut choppy layers and cut whatever color i had in the back leaving the underneath that wasn’t colored exposed. And when I came back to fix it had the nerve to say he would do it at no charge ONLY because he wanted me to come back. Bitch you cray
Im so angry right now trying to style my hair to disappointment, this was supposed to be something that added happiness to my already dismal existence having my dog just pass away. So thank you never again

Came in for a haircut with Jon. It had been awhile since my last cut but he did an excellent job with all that crazy curly hair. He gave it a great shape and didn’t butcher my hair like so many salons I’ve been to. Definitely worth the drive to Sherman Oaks. Also Jon is super nice.

Jon is great! I have a whole bunch of super curly, frizzy, coarse, long, thick hair (half black and half asian). Jon is the only person who can make sense of it all. I always have the worst luck with getting my hair cut and styled… no one can ever style my hair. It always looks like a big puffy cotton ball when they say they’re done. I always have to hurry home after getting my hair done to fix it. Not after Jon does it though. Jon takes his time to make sure my locks are nice and tight, and he does a great job with the layers, which no one can ever seem to get right. I’d recommend Jon if you have crazy curly hair.

Jon Buhek is far and above the best hair stylist around!!! He is patient with the frizziest coarsest hair and makes it a thing of beauty when he is done. They do not call him the «curly hair whisperer» for nothing. And, he is charming and funny to boot! Everyone here is so nice and professional that you want to just hang out here!

Lucy is one of the hairstylists at this great salon & she is quite honestly the BEST at what she does. Color, cut, hairstyles, you name it, she’s probably already done an amazing job at it to one of her clients! I came to this salon for the first time with a hint of what I wanted & she showed me my other options, different ideas while still considering what I want into her input & I left that salon with my hair looking the best it’s ever looked in YEARS. I would definitely recommend anyone to her, she can be well trusted, anyone will definitely leave both satisfied & confident with a unique new look!

I have been going to Onyx Salon for almost ten years now and always feel like a new woman when I walk out. Frances, my stylist, is a true artist with her cuts and color, takes her time and listens to you, and is overall an amazing person. I just love her. The salon is fun, relaxed, and has a warm family vibe. They are also not pretentious which I’m sure we have all encountered at some point or another in hair salons! I would very highly recommend Onyx Salon to anyone looking for an awesome new place to get beautified.

Genevieve is my favorite hair stylist in LA! I’ve lived in different areas of LA for most of my life, and I’ve tried out many salons. I moved to Sherman Oaks 2 years ago, and by luck, I found Genevieve at Onyx Salon. I am floored by her talent! She is not only a genuinely warm and fun person to chat with, but she never disappoints me in her hair expertise and technique. She has an exceptionally artistic eye, and I always end up with a hairstyle or cut better than I envisioned. Thanks Genevieve! See you soon.

I treated myself to a deep conditioning treatment with Dana and it was fantastic. She was very personable and I will definitely send my friends to this salon.

JON ROCKS!!! Being a Lead Singer in a Hair Band my look and my Hair is important!!! Jon is the only one I trust with my Hair… His expertise is unmatched!!! He’s probably the best colorist I’ve ever had too!!! People stop me on the street to compliment me on my hair and ask me who does my color!!! If you don’t believe me… just look at my pictures!

Jon has been styling my hair for years and he is awesome! I came to him when I first moved to LA after admiring the color and cut of a woman’s hair in Brentwood. I live in west LA but the trip to SO is absolutely worth it to get a great cut, beautiful color and the best service anywhere. The staff is so welcoming and friendly I find it impossible to believe that anyone would have a bad experience here. I have referred a number of friends to Jon and Onyx and so far they have all had great experiences and keep coming back.

Dana has been doing my hair for the past 14 years (wow, that’s crazy). She is talented, patient and awesome to talk to. I love the salon itself and the rest of the staff is so pleasant.
The clients here are crazy loyal. Most have been going to their respective stylists for as long or longer than I have. That speaks volumes about the experience you get at Onyx. I have referred countless people to Dana and they all love her.

A great friend with amazing hair has been going to Jon for years. My Beverly Hills stylist moved away and so I thought I would come over the hill to check out Jon and Onyx.
I was anxious because, like everyone else, I am very picky about my hair and hate hair that screams: Chunky Highlights! They fit me in at very short notice (I was in crisis mode because of my roots). So first I had just a single color with Jon’s assistant Ericmo (spelling?). He consulted with Jon and they took the time to figure out exactly what would be best.
Last week had single color (with Ericmo), highlights and haircut with Jon — everything came out beautifully and I am thrilled. (Not to mention way cheaper than in BH). My fine straight hair looks very full with lots of movement. The colour is unbelievable — just what I wanted, a lot of depth and subtlety… anxiety gone! Jon has a lovely warm presence — very genuine and funny. He and Ericmo, a really interesting guy, make a great team.

i went there for a blow dry & shuld say the quality of job done was good. well, better than good!
but it’s too pricey. $ 50 for long hair blow dry. i can get a haircut almost at that price.
staff are professional & friendly.
would probably go there if i find a coupon or something, for a haircut.
they have valet parking in the back & validate it too, but u need to pay $ 3 w/​validation

Let me accentuate the positive.
+friendly service. the receptionist is ever bubbly and accommodating.

+ a great cut (which wasn’t included in my groupon, but i needed anyway)
I have never had my hair colored, and purchased this Groupon in the hopes of venturing out. After talking to Megan we decided a semi permanent color slightly lighter than my natural black hair color would wash out over time minimizing upkeep and give me some warm tones in my hair. Well, to be honest, there’s really no difference… at all.
Ok, next the blowdry. Honestly, this is the poorest blow out I’ve ever had. Let me preface this by saying i have mixed very curly hair. So it takes someone who is SKILLED at blowouts to know how to blow out a curly cue like me. The blowout was not executed well enough, which happens sometimes, but usually a stylist will follow up with a flat iron to really ensure that the hair is being straightened to the max. Well no flat iron was used, and I walked out of the salon with frizzier hair than when i came in — NO exaggeration!!! It was kind of embarrassing.
I really wanted to say something, but she was already late for another appointment, and a flat iron would’ve taken another 20 – 30 minutes.
Not impressed at all. It really sucks too because, I so enjoyed my stylist and the staff, but at the end of the day I’m paying to look better than when I came in and I just didn’t.
I am now home with a flat iron plugged in, ready to remedy the problem. :(
The cut she gave me was good and thorough, but the whole reason I came to Onyx (the blowdry and color) was a flop. Such a waste!
I’m sure my stylist is a pro at other types of hair, but for me she may have been out of her league and her comfort zone. I’d still recommend the salon and Megan. She is truly a delight to be around!
I’ll stick to the pricey Beverly Hills Salon.

If only I can reduce my review further to 0 stars, I seriously would. I received a private message as follows:
«Consider the source u were on your phone the entire time u were rude when you arrived and rude when u left adieu ina»
Few things:
1) They would send me a private message instead of publicaly commenting on my reviews shows that they knew their fault and would rather resolve this privately without hurting their reputation further.
2) The only reason I would be on my phone would be because NO ONE was friendly enough to chat up with me. I consider myself friendly and the farthest person from being rude. I know my phone manners, but you left me with no choice.
3) I was rude when I arrived? I was pretty sure I arrived, smiled and said «Hi! How are you doing? I’m here for an appointment with…» to the receptionist, like I would to anyone. Again, I am the farthest parson from being rude but you have left me with no choice.
I usually don’t like leaving negative reviews nor write reviews that sounds like rants, but these people are far from understanding what a basic customer service should be like. Instead of accepting my review as a constructive criticism and improve their customer service and attitude, they’d rather send me another rude message. Avoid this place at all cost.

I love Onyx salon! Jon has been cutting my hair for over 20 years and I wouldn’t go to anyone else. He does a great job everytime. I have wavy hair and he knows exactly how to cut it. It looks perfect for the six weeks in between haircuts.
Toni does my color beautifully. I have black hair and she covers my gray perfectly. She matches my hair color and makes it look very natural. One of the friends at my gym that I see every week was surprised that I have my hair colored.
Everyone who works at the salon is very friendly. They make you feel very comfortable and relaxed while you are there.

Jon at Onyx Salon in Sherman Oaks styles my long layers and will have you out of there in half an hour. .
He was voted best curly hair stylist by LA Weekly.
If you know anyone with wavy or curly hair, he’s the man!
$ 75 a pop.
I’ve tried a different place and paid the price in a big way – they butchered my hair and self-​esteem.
I’ve had to wait 3 months to grow it out so I can go back to Jon and have him work his magic. Lesson learned.
Jon knows how to work with thick, «ethnic» hair which many stylist can’t.
He thinned and layered my hair really nicely.
He’s very punctual and a time stickler, so be on time. I’ve lost one appointment due to tardiness and I was not a happy camper. However, I’ve gone back because he’s sweet and THAT good.
Jon is my «Frizzy Hair Whisperer».

I love Onyx salon. The people who work there are very friendly. Jenny, the receptionist, is so personable and kind. I have only worked with Dana and Denise.
Dana is the best stylist ever. I have been going to her for over 5 years and she is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend her to anyone. Sometimes when I visit I know exactly what kind of haircut I want. Other times, I ask her to just cut my hair however she wants. I trust her that much and have never been disappointed. She did my hair for my wedding and I loved it!
Denise is amazing! She does eyebrows and make-​up. She is very detail oriented. She did my make-​up for my wedding. I got so many compliments!
I don’t know any of the other stylists, but I am sure they are all wonderful!
