White Silo Farm

White Silo is on par with other CT or southern NY wineries I’ve tried… although if you’re looking for a California or even larger Virginia-​style tasting experience, you’re out of luck. White Silo is almost all about fruit wines, with only a few grape wines thrown in. If that’s not your cup of tea (um…glass of wine?) then skip this place. But if fruit wine is your thing, then you’ll likely leave a happy customer.
White Silo is small but cute. Like many CT wineries, they seem to make their business off people who want to spice up their day with a picnic and a glass of vino. My tasting partner & I partnered up so we sampled most of their menu with a bit of sharing (because for wine, sharing is caring).
Surprisingly, my favorite was the white Cayuga wine. This is a grape I’ve seldom tried before, so it came as a pleasant surprise. But since I’m not much of a fruit wine drinker, much of their menu was wasted to me.
I’d recommend White Silo to fruit wine aficionados and those willing to experiment a bit… but skip it if you’re only into grapes.

Worst winery I have ever visited. Sarah K.‘s review hit the nose on the head regarding the service.
PROS:
1. As many have mentioned, it’s a peaceful and serene place. Beautiful view.
2. The outdoor terrace and indoor winery have a nice ambiance.
3. Quirky flavored, homemade mustards (rhubarb, black current) would make a nice gift.
CONS:
1. The most unfriendly service that I have ever received at any winery, ever. The young blond hostess never even smiled at us. In fact, she made it a point to speak with us as little as possible. It’s very strange to do a tasting and not have your host or hostess try to educate you about the wines while you are tasting them. Aren’t they trying to sell you wine?
It’s one thing to ignore customers when it’s super busy, but to ignore them to their face when it’s not is just plain rude. We asked her how large the grounds were so we could walk around and explore and she just looked at us blankly and said, «I don’t know.» And made no effort to find out from someone else. She didn’t even say thank you when we paid. She obviously doesn’t want to be there. We are guessing that she is a relative of the owner or partner (there was a strong resemblance to the bartender) and that is why she continues to work there…
It’s a shame, because I really liked the ambiance despite her disinterest in us and would have brought visitors from out of town. As it stands, we never want to go back and take the chance of dealing with her crappy and miserable attitude ever again.
2. The wine. I wasn’t impressed by any of them. The sangria tastes like a wine cooler. The best one, by far, was the white grape varietal, but I have had much better wines at the $ 10-​$ 15/​bottle price point. The red grape varietal tasted super young, light, and bitter. Which is what it is, I guess – really young wine. Some of the super sweet dessert wines are okay. But I wouldn’t make a special trip to try them.
All in all, a disappointing experience. It’s too bad, I really wanted to like – no, LOVE – this place.

A unique selection of fruit forward wines are definitely worth the stop to this Sherman winery. Enjoy a selection of rhubarb, blackberry, raspberry, black currant, and Cayuga grape wines while you watch the sun set over the hillside. The bar is petite and the tasting room can get packed on the weekends (especially during the monthly fruit festivals) but everyone is super friendly and a little patience goes a long way. I recently attended for the blackberry festival and found a delicious selection of small plates to enjoy as I alternated my tastings. The sparkling raspberry wine and the blackberry sorbet were an amazing combination. Thanks to Justin for a sneak peak of the new rosé!!!

The customer service here has gone downhill.
Went in for a tasting today, my first time back in a couple years. The hostess seemed nice enough but a little distracted. Not once, but twice she doesn’t notice that we are waiting for our next taste because she’s scrolling on her cell phone. Then she gets a phone call and just leaves before our tasting is over, leaving the other hostess to guess which wine we were at and finish up our tasting. I work in customer service and it really irks me when employees are blatantly using their phones when they are supposed to be serving customers. When the place is dead, fine, but not when you have people standing right in front of you.
In addition, unlike most of the other wineries on the CT wine trail, the hostess offered no explanation regarding the wines as she poured them, just their names. This seems odd for a local winery, usually the employees are passionate about the wine and describing the flavors, food pairings, etc. — that is one of the things I enjoy most about wine tastings and to see none of that passion remaining at White Silo was disappointing.
As for the wines, I enjoyed all of them, I always do. The sweet rhubarb is my favorite. But I’ll probably just get it at a local liquor store from now on.

This place is a lot less pretentious than some of the other wineries on the CT wine trail. The owner is always outgoing and animated about explaining the wine processes and quirks about the farm. Love the semisweet raspberry and blackberry, as well as the sparkling raspberry. The cassis is worth a try, but you’ll either love it or strongly dislike it. The «bartenders» really tailor the explanation of the wine to you – if you’re interested in chatting, they’ll tell you everything you want to know. If you’re more interested in the art or the people you’re with, they’ll give you a quick explanation and come back when you’re ready for more. By far my favorite CT winery!

We took the long drive out to Sherman today and spent a very nice couple of hours at the beautiful White Solo Farm. We had their Picnic Lunch special with a wine tasting and a tour. The only thing that could have improved the day was less rain and more sunshine –the bad weather truncated our tour of the grounds and vineyard.
On their website, White Silo is described as a «family operated boutique winery specializing in small batch fruit and grape wine». That description is right on the money.
They sell one sparkling wine, an $ 18 Red Raspberry. They sell six dry wines — a $ 14 Rhubarb, a $ 15 Blackberry, a $ 15 Raspberry, a $ 16 Black Currant, a very nice $ 15 Upland Pastures White (with Cayuga Grapes), and a $ 15 Upland Pastures Red.
They sell four Semi-​sweets– the Rhubarb and Raspberry are $ 10, a Cassis is $ 14, and a Blackberry is $ 15.
They sell a $ 29 Sangria «kit» which is a box containing a bottle of WHite and a bottle of blackberry.
We had a package deal that included their picnic lunch and it included a turkey sandwich (kind of bready), a quinoa-​kale salad (excellent), a mini cheese plate (very good), some mixed nuts, a turtle bar (awesome) and a glass of their sparkling raspberry (excellent).
The tasting normally runs $ 7 and lets you sample any 4 of their wines plus a sangria. I ordered four of the dry wines and my wife sampled all 4 of their sweet wines. I liked pretty much everything I tried– the standouts were the Sparkling Red Raspberry, Rhubarb (their top seller), blackberry, the White grape wine, and all of the sweet wines.
Our tour guide Eric was very informative and entertaining and did a great job on the history of the property, the production of the wines, and explaining the many festivals (rhubarb, asparagus, raspberry, chocolate) that White Silo hosts.
We really enjoyed ourselves and had a very enjoyable afternoon.

The two stars are for the view, the wine was mediocre. We opted for one tasting (I was all tasted out, and planned to get a glass of sangria), my husband picked what he wanted to taste. I didn’t love any of it. We ended up with a glass of sangria for me and a glass of cassis for my husband. We headed out to the beautiful seating area with our picnic food, part 2 (this was vineyard stop 4 of 4 for the day).
I have had the sangria previously at the CT wine festival. I thought I was a fan, but it was kind of blah. Not super cold, no fruit, no carbonation, could have just used a little something extra. It was fine but I was not dying for a second glass. But I could have enjoyed that view all day long! I think they should consider adding some live music outside on the weekends, might attract more customers.

Mainly fruity wines which normally I would steer away from, but they were surprisingly delightful! The tasting area is quaint and accompanied by a little art area. The guy who did our tasting was very nice. We sat outside and relaxed on the peaceful property. We’ll be back!

We visited the winery on a Saturday in the fall. There was an art show and live music that day, and it was moderately busy. We thought the wines were good but nothing stood out as memorable. The winery and how it is set up is more stuffy than the other more family like settings around. The landscape was beautiful and I would recommend stopping by if you are in the area, but I wouldn’t plan my trip to go just there.

White Silo, what a pleasantly pleasant surprise! I knew from reading the reviews that this winery mainly focuses on fruit wines, which are not exactly my favorite. My experiences have led me to believe that fruit wines are overly sweet, light, and usually taste like juice. I had no idea that fruit wines could actually be complex, bold, or dry, although the semi-​sweet wines were equally as impressive. A few of the wines left my boyfriend and I stunned.
STUNNED.
I expected to like the rhubarb wine, since that’s the one that gets mentioned most frequently, but I don’t think I’m a big rhubarb fan. I wound up purchasing a bottle of the Dry Blackberry (WHOA), Semisweet Raspberry (WHOA) and a glass of their sangria to enjoy outside. The sangria is equal parts dry something and semisweet something, I can’t remember, but that’s it– no Sprite, no nothing, just straight up Awesome Potion.
The only thing that could have made this visit better would have been a hostess who was a little friendlier and had more to say about the wines.
Hooray for exceeding expectations and learning you might like something more than you thought you did!

A terrific little winery run by a very friendly family. A lovely tasting room adorned with local art. A beautiful view overlooking the vineyard while you are having a glass of wine. The owner loves to share his knowledge of his unique wines. Well worth the visit. They have done a terrific job creating a warm and welcoming winery.

Home of fruit wines! Bought a $ 25 LivingSocial coupon which entitled me and my partner to a tour, two tastings of 5 wines each, two boxed gourmet lunches (see below for what it contained), two glasses of their sparkling red raspberry wine to enjoy with lunch, chocolates, and two souvenir wine glasses. What a deal! The atmosphere inside was very cozy, the host very interested in educating us, and I loved their relaxing music.
Their gourmet lunch included half a turkey sandwich, a small cheese and dried fruit tasting, a quinoa salad, a small container of mixed nuts, and the most delicious chocolate turtle bar. It tasted like chocolatey toffee! We enjoyed it outside at their patio tables and it was definitely filling.
This winery features fruit wines in both the dry and sweet variety – raspberry, blackberry, currant, grape, and even rhubarb! My favorite by far was the dry raspberry. Had a very prominent raspberry flavor but wasn’t too sweet, making it very drinkable. I prefer drier wines but if you want you can get the same raspberry flavor in a sweet version. Such a neat option! The wines are very afforable at $ 10-​$ 18 a bottle with my favorite coming in at $ 15.
Definitely recommend stopping by! A tasting or full glass of wine is usually $ 7 without the coupon.

Decent service, decent prices, nicely organized and tasty wines, with a take-​home glass. Some wines are imported.

Had a lovely afternoon here yesterday! My friends and I did a wine tasting and ordered a cheese plate to go along with the red wine we enjoyed outside. The cheese was DELICIOUS. I need to go back for some cheese and their blackberry wine (sweeter than most but I loved it!)
They partake in festivals — asparagus, rhubarb pie, paella! Yum! I will definitely be back the next time we are in Connecticut. The owners were knowledgable and personal without being pushy!

What a great day — a four wine tasting, tour of the «vineyards», munching on late ripening raspberries, a healthy and tasty box lunch, and a closure of chocolates and sparkling raspberry wine.
This is a gem and cannot fail to please, especially on a nice day when you can sit outdoors, looking out over the vineyard to the mountains and enjoy the food and wine.
They also make quince, black currant and rhubarb mustards.
Wonderful family run operation. We will be back for sure!

Not as big as you’d think. We went up and expected a full tour and it was a walk from the main building and then about 100 feet out and then back. All in all, about a 10 minute «tour». Considering how much we paid in tolls 7 the amount of time it took to get there, we could’ve just gone out to LI.
The wine is good. We bought a bottle to enjoy with our lunch (also pretty tasty) and it made our meal. The staff was pretty helpful & knowledgeable. Bought 2 bottles to take home with us.
Did I enjoy my experience? Sure. Would I go back? No.

This was by far the most young, hip and social of the 4 vineyards we visited on the SW Wine Trail. While we were there, there was a Bacheleorette Party and some big Groupon deal going on. We were excited to stop here, as per their website «This year we are offering gourmet picnic lunch boxes for $ 20 per person» however, when we asked our tasting host he said they couldn’t accomodate us and that it was only for the Groupon people? umm not per your website OR the board behind you??? FAIL. The website also mentioned a cheeseplate we could order and he didn’t even offer that.
Out tasting host was horrible. He didnt explain anything, just poured. He kept forgetting what people wanted. He seemed stoned out of his mind or he had early onset alzheimers.
The wines were all fruit based and my favorite was the rhubarb semi sweet. The Sangria was the real winner though. But it only came in a kit…
Final comment: They need to get their act together, the place was total chaos. Start with getting rid of the incompetent tasting host.

I love the White Silo Farm! Aimee M. took me on a Saturday morning. It was fairly easy to find. it was my first local winery experience (winery altogether actually) and I was really pleased by the whole experience: tastings, lunch and tour. We used a $ 50 for 2 coupon so it was a pretty good deal.
Everything is family owned. When we arrived, we parked on the grass and walked into the barn (literally a barn!). Around the bend we saw acres of grape fields — which we’d tour later. We walked into the barn to find a beautifully decorated interior — with art and poems plastered all over the walls. There was a little ode to the moon hung right next to a series of beautiful moon-​lit paintings.
We sat at the wine bar and heard all about the White Silo wines made right in the back! All of them were fruity (my fav). I stuck to the white wine column and Aimee stuck to the red… so we tasted pretty much everything. Generous portions too! I ended up buying a bottle of the rhubarb sweet white wine — LOVED it. Prices for the bottles are very reasonable ($ 10 for my bottle).
We had our boxed lunch (included in the groupon). It literally came in a nice box and it was packaged very nicely. Had a really good Moroccan Salad (quinoa, chickpeas, black currants, sundried tomato, onions, red pepper and herbs and spices). They also had mustard chicken over arugala, which Aimee said was really good. I replaced the chicken with more cheese — amazing. It also included tiny breadsticks, and a chocolate caramel turtle!
The tour was great too — very informative. Learned a lot about winemaking and even saw the process. We saw tiny baby grapes in the farm and even ate fresh asparagus picked right from the field (tastes like peas).
Highly recommend this if you come across to another Groupon deal!

White Silo farm is still developing from its humble roots. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. If you’re passing by then go ahead. But if you are deep into the Napa sort of experienced, these guys aren’t going to come close. I was fortunate that my date was fun to be with and entertaining, but you can’t give the winery credit for that sort of thing (he’s fun when he’s sober as well :)) For a special trip from NYC, it might be a bit much, as a few of the closer wineries or a general tour might give you more.
It is beautiful to drive up to CT from the Big Apple. Their farm is smallish relative to larger more elaborate wineries. The tour is run by a young boy who is knowledgeable, but not worldly, meaning, he knows the wine making business, but he hasn’t had enough time in the world to be totally sage and know the wine. I suspect one day that he’ll be excellent, given his passion for the business. For those that have been on many more tours, he is raw and learning.
As for the wine, there are a few interesting dessert wines. I enjoyed the Rhubarb dessert wine, personally and we purchased a few for our holiday wine gifting needs. The boxed lunch was lovely, as was the tasting and glasses from a check it out standpoint. These are all berry wines, so they won’t be aged in any way for any meaningful time. They are working on a sparkling and given the general demand, I think if they made all of the deserts into a sparkling, they would have a lovely product; particularly the Rhubarb.
I feel that in years to come, they will continue to grow a farm and a business and this will make the tour far more interesting. Alternatively, if they coordinate with other local wineries, then the trip wouldn’t feel so much of a hassle. The delicious fare is quaint and adorable and the whole idea of a day out of the city is nice. If you’re working with travelzoo, though just make it easier… maybe have a transportation and multiple stops.
I would give them another shot in a few years when they mature. But for now, I’d love to try other wineries first.

Discovered this place in travel zoo. I thought it would be a great road trip and also a great date for me and my boyfriend since we love wine.
This winery was excellent the wine was delicious and they gave us lunch which was also really good. We sat outside and ate our lunch and drank our wine. We picked rasberries went on the wine tour after that was done we got our bottle of free wine and two glasses. this place is great it is family owned they make you feel like family. Would deff go again with a travel zoo discount or not. If you want to relax and enjoy some quiet time this is the place to be. They also make there own mustard which is delicious.
