History

Established in 1945.

In 1945 Ora and Grace Yoder made a decision to buy a dry goods store in Topeka Indiana, the heart of Amish country. The original operation included many goods to serve the local farming population. Bib overalls, work shoes, and of course fabric for clothing and quilts were items sold.

In 1968, the Yoder Department Store was moved to nearby Shipshewana where it shared space in Shipshe Center with two other businesses. After Ora passed away in 1992 at the age of 85, Shipshe Center was renamed Yoder’s Shopping Center. The business has remained a family owned and managed business passing onto the 3rd generation during 2006.

Decades later, we still offer plenty of the basic and unusual items, whether it’s our 12,000 bolts of quilting and fashion fabric, 10,000 pairs of shoes or large selection of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing you are sure to find something not found elsewhere.
