Smith Point Park Beach

Coming to Smith Point it’s hard to believe a park can be so beautiful. You can see seagulls overhead in search of food, deer on the grounds with new borns and the first sign of summer, teens on the beach playing volleyball. This is really a great beach to relax and admire the Atlantic Ocean. Since I moved out East I have a better appreciation of parks and beaches. They have a basketball court also if you like playing, I’m not good at basketball but it is fun to shoot around. They also have a small museum with some fact about the beach and history of the park and wildlife. They also have a food court and out door benches if you want to eat out and in the summer they open up the stage to local bands and artist to preform. To me having something fun and close to my house is great when you have nothing planned I’m your day. I can walk to the park for some much needed exercise and feel productive by getting out rather then playing my Play Station 4 all day. If you get the opportunity come see the TWA memorial, it’s a way to remember all those that lost there lives that target day of the coast of Long Island. I plan to spend more time at Smith Point over the summer.

Smiths point would be my local go to beach, but it’s filthy. It’s super crowded, and disrespected. It fits right in to Shirley but it doesn’t suit me much. The park cops are dicks for no reason at times as well.
If you go, stay away from the crowd and walk all the way past the camper side of the beach.
This beach in the morning, was littered with litter (yeah) destroyed, bugs everywhere, the worst sunrise I’ve ever seen because of trash at every step.
It’s sad that this isn’t an exaggeration.
The outerwear always seems to be closed or limited so don’t bother bringing your pass really.
That being said they have live music now all summer long, and a few snacks and drinks too! It’s pretty cool if you’re in the area, but the nature walk is buggy, the beaches too, and I just can’t enjoy that place as much as when I was a kid and our waters were cleaner. Beaches out east I hope don’t go as down hill anytime soon.

Ten years ago there was a lot more beach, the food was better, the parking fee was reasonable and the outer beach was more accessible. Today the food is «meh», the outer beach is closed much of the time and the parking fee is outrageous, ($ 15), I am a resident so I get a discount with my green card, but it’s still lousy to pay that much money to go to a «public beach» and i feel sorry for those who don’t have a discount The lifeguards are very good — they always have been, although I doubt they’re being adequately compensated despite the obscene amount they charge now for parking and food. A business owner can run his business into the ground by reaping the profits and not re-​investing/​keeping up with maintenance & making improvements accordingly. This is what I see happening here.

The outer beach is now open after being closed for a month! We pay $ 100 for a beach permit and get to use the beach for half the summer.

This is a pretty good beach! The bathrooms could be cleaner and I mean really cleaner by the campgrounds. It grosses me out to use the sinks because the sinks are growing mold. When I am camping and I pick people up from the parking lot and bring them in, it is very annoying that I have to be sure to bring them back to the parking lot by 10:00 PM or else they will get a ticket. I think that is messed up. Now with the positives. It’s very nature friendly and no matter what campsite you get you will have a view of the water. I like that I can just bring my kayak to the bay side and just go around there and have some fun. The beach hut is really nice and they always have a good band playing there. And the Atlantic side of the beach is actually pretty clean, the water is clean and there isn’t too muck litter. It’s actually my favorite place to camp!

If you live out this way seems like a decent beach. The beach hut had a full bar and ice cream counter along with the usual fried and raw fare one expects at the beach. Huge parking lot informs you of the crowds And traffic that are possible. Didn’t experience too much difficulty with either. The beach is a little dirty, Capri sun pouches and corona caps washed on shore and people smoke… Large bathrooms are relatively clean. One thing this beach gets 4 stars for is the lifeguards. They are all smoking hot, men and women and look fit as phuk. Take a few minutes to watch the surfers. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here but if you are close check it out!

Clean and beautiful beach that is pretty family oriented. A bit crowded for my tastes. A lot of children around, so beware, haha. My friend and I both got hit in the head by inflatable beach balls and frisbees, so choose a relatively emptier location to sunbath. There’s live music and a restaurant in the vicinity too.

Beautiful park, but i paid for my reservation, and they gave away the spot, because i came a day late, but i already paid, and no refund !!! Extreme annoying :/ :/

awful ! beautiful beach. BUT. made camping reservation 3 months in advance for spot for my camper. When we did not come the first day, due to bad weather, then the next day had to work, when we called the 3^rd day, they said, sorry we gave away your space. WHAT? I paid in advance, and they simply gave away my space. so I asked the lady on the phone, did anyone else not show up, we could take their space? oh, no. sorry…and btw, their reservation system is the WORRRSSSST ever… extremely annoying to deal with. Oh, and no refund.
Now I know why my friends who camp recommend going to a privately owned facility, not a state or county facility.
Guess that’s what I could expect for a County run facility. I would give no stars if that was an option. GRRRR!

Love this beach so much, we bought a house within walking distance. Grew up going here all the time whether it was camping at the camp site or just going to the beach to swim. Parking is a bit pricey. Love the free music.

Awesome. Sundays that 70sBand rock! Only there til end of September. So get down there and enjoy the sunshine.

I love coming to this beach with my family & friends.
Pros:
Clean beach, no debris in site.
Family friendly
Handicap parking if you need it which puts you steps from the sand.
Green-​Key holders free during the week. $ 8 on the weekends.
Huge concession stand where you can get drinks (alcoholic or non-​alcoholic), really good burgers fries, chicken fingers, calamari, scallops, shrimp, fish & corn on the cob! Oh, and ice cream too.
The TWA800 Memorial site is here, very nice.
Live band which plays until about 9:30 and there are ALWAYS great!
Cons:
$ 15 parking fee for Non-​Green holders (non-​residents)
The bathrooms aren’t always the cleanest (which is why I gave it 4 stars).
Other than that awesome beach and I would return again & again!!!

This is my teenage beach, I have so many memories coming here. When i got my first car, this was my go to spot.
My High School friends had a little get together at The Hut. I grabbed a beer on tap, listening to the live music on Friday night, I look off the pier and see:
Families on blankets, listening to live music
Kids swimming before it gets dark
People dancing to live music
This beach is really magnificent with powered white sands, the beach seems it can go on forever.
Years ago, I took my Land Rover 4 wheeling at the end of the beach. The beach encourages fun!
I came here before the sun went down and paid no parking. Free for me :)

Went there yesterday because I didn’t feel like dealing with the thots and tarts at Jones Beach (long story).
The parking for non-​residents is $ 15. Residents are $ 8. Fee is per car. I didn’t like the cost; why do non residents have to pay twice as much? (We are Town of Babylon residents but we didn’t have a Green Key — didn’t even know that we could prove residency by showing a license. We just moved here two years ago but everything is still under our PA home. I, on the otherhand, have a NYS license so I could have saved us $ 7) Lots of parking available despite the crowded beach. My hubby had been there before, I hadn’t, so I didn’t know what to expect.
The TWA800 memorial is nice. RIP to the victims.
The boardwalk is gone. Hubby says that is a result of Hurricane Sandy. A lot of the erosion is apparent. The dunes are a short distance from the shoreline. The water comes up pretty far; three times we had to move back because the awesome waves came ashore. The beach is clean by NY standards with shells and kelp debris. I had a hard time finding a cigarette butt or food wrapper — and trust me I searched because I’m a smoker but I don’t believe in subjecting people to my smoke, especially on the beach (please see earlier Jones Beach comments). Radios are allowed but I didn’t hear any, which means that we were dealing with a reading crowd (signs clearly posted asking folks to respect the noise levels), and we were dealing with a respectful bunch. The beach was *LOADED* with kids (camp trip? pre-​back to school crew? last hurrah college kids?) but no one was noisy or rambunctious. Nice beach neighbors, we had. They also had to move when the waves came in and we kicked up an awesome conversation.
The Beach Hut has a lovely selection of seafood. I had fried scallops and fries; hubby had a cheeseburger and fries (yeah, at the beach… who does that?) The scallops tasted like the sea, which to me means fresh. It’s a bit overpriced, in my opinion (the water is RIGHT THERE — no overhead, you’d think). THEY ONLY TAKE CASH! A band called Soul Patch – they play R&B, funk, soul – was setting up before we left. Seems that Friday evenings are fun there.
Very family friendly and the restrooms are kept somewhat neat. The outdoor showers are a plus. I just hate having to trek through the tunnel to get back to the car (I’m spoiled – I’m used to Field 6 at Jones Beach) Fortunately, there’s an ice cream truck (the light?) at the end of the tunnel!
If the proceeds from the parking fees are going towards repairing/​restoring the beach, then after this great experience, I don’t mind paying. It’s worth it!

I remember when there was more beach to this beach. Even as it has eroded away, I was still able to raise my children, taking them here. Inexpensive parking, reasonable refreshments, lobster specials in the evening, listening to bands play, outdoor shower, and the Flight 800 memorial. I have seen deer cross the bridge in the morning, and graze near where my car was parked. I had once gone four wheeling. And once we were stopped as we were leaving, for an alcohol check (we drank coke).
Lots of memories, great beach! It’s a shame how it has been affected by erosion.

Awesome beach! Got super crowded as the day went on but there was still plenty of room for everyone. Really glad to come here on one of the nicest days of the year.
The riptides were horrible but there were plenty of lifeguards working and brining in anyone who needed help.

The parking —
General Public = $ 12.00
Residents (with proof of Green Key) = $ 5.00
Resident Handicapped and Seniors = FREE
Residents can buy a season parking pass for $ 50.00
The sand —
Larger grains with natural debris (i.e. weeds, shells, some tiny rocks).
The water —
Large waves that can get rough and choppy at times. Cleanliness — I didn’t run into any alien debris (i.e. garbage), so I would consider that clean by Northeast standards.
The people —
On the ideal summer day, expect to be packed in like a sardine in a can with your fellow beach goer. However, these are among the most polite and considerate beach goers I’ve encountered. Despite how crowded it can get, folks are considerate of the personal space of their beach neighbor. An appropriate distance is maintained between groups, music is kept at a reasonable volume, trash picked up by beach goers, children within parents watchful eye = Harmony. Great family beach.
The seagulls —
Out Of Control. Luckily we did not fall victim to the attacks of these scavengers, but all around us people left their picnic sites exposed and unattended as they went to bathe in the water with unfortunate (albeit humorous) results. The birds seem to especially know and love potato chip bags; time after time they would swoop in on a closed bag and 10 –15 birds would peck it open. By the time the owners turned around from the water to chase them away, it was to late, the wily birds had made off with the good. MORAL OF THE STORY = KEEP YOUR FOOD HIDDEN OR SUFFER THE REVENGE OF THE BIRDS!
The lifeguards (*wink*wink*) —
Impressive safety record AND not bad to look at. Not a single drowning within the protected area in over 50 years! Kudos! And extra points should be awarded for those tiny green swim trunks (hahaha).
The memorial —
If you have time, take a walk through the memorial for the victims of TWA flight 800. A great little park right off the boardwalk with flags representing the nationalities of those lost (see pics) and their names itched on a marble mural.

This is the very first Beach I went to since I have been here and so far I don’t hate it. So far, I went there three times. My very first experience I saw the sunset, a deer right next to the passenger car (it was so close) and some good o waves.
One best thing i like about this is after a good swim and a bit tanning, i can walk to the hut nearby for some decent food and drinks… all that while enjoying some great live music.

I’m not from Long Island so this might seem like a stupid point but I never thought of New York having beaches. So when this obvious fact was shoved in my face, my mind was blown!
Being used to South Jersey shore towns (Ocean City, Wildwood etc) I thought I knew what a crowded beach was. Boy was I wrong. Even on a Wednesday, this beach was so packed that no matter where I looked there were PEOPLE. But the awesome thing was, it never seemed too much as the lifeguards were always opening up new towers so that the swimming areas kept getting expanded. Yay to not being on top of random strangers while in the ocean!
Plenty of parking with tunnels that go right under the main road for safe walking. There is a pavilion with a snack bar and restrooms right in the middle of the area.
I feel like if I lived on long island I would definitely come here often.

I like this beach because its closer, cheaper and not as touristy as westhampton beach. The class of people is definitely lower than what you’d find in the hamptons, but in a way thats good because you don’t get all the snooty rich people all over the place.
The only thing I don’t like is that the beach is closed at night. Westhampton beach you can go at night and walk on the beach, here they have cops and you are not allowed on it.
