Maguilla began studying martial arts as a little kid growing up in Brazil. After focusing on boxing for several years, he was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu and was immediately impressed at its effectiveness.
He became a student at Carlson Gracie Sr.‘s academy in Copa Cabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He earned his yellow belt the same year. It took just one more year to earn his blue belt, by which time he was able to control opponents 15 years his senior.
From 1985 to 1989, under Carlson Gracie and as a member of the world champion team «Nova/Uniao», he racked up numerous state champion victories, losing only one of 200+ fights.
After training with Carlson Gracie, Maguilla began an even more intense training regimen with the renowned Andre Pederneiras.
